A YEAR OF EMBRACING
CHANGE & TECHNOLOGY
2020 ANNUAL REPORT
“So often in life, things that you
regard as an impediment
turn out to be great, good fortune.”
— JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG
2 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
There is so much gratification represented in our 2020 annual report—so much blood, sweat, and tears—that we just could
not be prouder of what we accomplished with our community in 2020. In a year of extraordinary upheaval from a deadly
pandemic, the tumultuous reckoning of racial injustice, and a contentious election and its violent aftermath, we found an
opportunity to grow into the questions that this season of disquietude delivered in abundance. It is to the NITA community, for
its generous support and collective brain power, that we owe our deepest thanks for where we are today.
The COVID-19 pandemic neither thwarted NITA’s mission nor alleviated the need for advocacy skills training. If anything, it
increased the demand for skilled trial lawyers, trained to represent clients when courthouses and law offices closed, and
court and client business went online out of necessity. There was a chasm between lawyers and the skills they needed for
remote representation, and NITA was there to fill that gap.
When Colorado issued the March 18, 2020, shelter-at-home orders and our Boulder headquarters closed, NITA was already
implementing our crisis plan. We were in a unique position to do so: our deposition skills course had been offered as an online
option since 2010, so we used that successful model as a basis to take the rest of our programming online. We took advantage
of our existing technology and experience and used them as a foundation to meet the rapidly changing needs of our clients.
From the beginning, we chose to be transparent and we framed the pandemic not as a crisis, but as an opportunity. With that
mindset, we kept our lines of communication open with the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and our community, welcoming
collaboration throughout the disruption and re-stabilization. By May, we saw early, positive indicators that we were finding
our footing. We launched our new modular trial course, online writing course, and other online offerings, as well a variety of
remote advocacy resources. Law firms reached out about these new offerings and were soon scheduling online training in
both public and custom courses, and people enrolled in our online courses and coaching.
Necessity forced us to make on-the-spot changes and have the courage to try things NITA has never done before. We were
innovative, thoughtful, proactive, and agile in creating, marketing, and delivering new products and distribution methods during
this crisis. We cannot adequately express our gratitude and appreciation for everyone’s hard work and can-do attitudes.
These changes would not have been possible without the generous—more than generous—support of our donors. When
NITA asked, you came through for us. Early in the pandemic I personally reached out to you, requesting help at a volatile and
uncertain time. The outpouring of donations touched and humbled us all. Your generosity expressed how much NITA means
to you, and we are grateful beyond measure for your aid. Thank you.
We still believe in the importance of an attorney’s physical presence in the courts, and training trial lawyers in the “learning-
by-doing” method at live, onsite courses remains an essential part of who we are and how we carry out our mission. Human
connection is critical to how we teach and mentor, so we’re thrilled to have socially distant, onsite programming back on our
calendar, starting in July 2021.
We are forever changed by how we steered our mighty nonprofit through this unforgettable year. As a team—staff, faculty,
authors, trustees, donors, and clients—we soared above to deliver exceptional training to the legal bar. This is NITA.

NITA CONVERTS ONSITE COURSES TO ONLINE COURSES
Without sacrificing the learning-by-doing
methodology, NITA relied on its experience of
providing online training and converted its Building
Trial Skills course to an online course. The online
course, held monthly, is comprised of four one-
day online modules that are scheduled on Fridays
over a period of four weeks. Attendance averaged
29 people per course and included people from
across the nation.
NITA DEVELOPS NEW COURSE TYPES TO SATISFY CURRENT NEEDS
Recognizing that NITA clients may need guidance
on how to represent their clients remotely, NITA
developed half-day online courses and One-on-One
Coaching Sessions. Both course types covered
a variety of advocacy and communication skills
needed to effectively represent your client online
including motions, hearings, depositions, and trials.
NITA BECOMES A RESOURCE AND AUTHORITY ON REMOTE ADVOCACY
Providing remote advocacy training and resources
like webcasts, podcasts, whitepapers, publications,
webpages, and, of course, the Summit increased
NITA’s presence among the legal community. News
outlets like Law360, Law.com, and JD Supra wrote
articles that featured NITA’s courses on remote
advocacy and the faculty that taught them.

“I completed the four-week online advocacy
skills program through NITA. I had been
in court a number of times prior to this
training. However, in all of my experiences
in court since this training, I have been
significantly more comfortable and effective.
I work at a legal aid organization and have
a very large caseload that requires me to
be in court often. I need this comfort and
effectiveness to provide the highest quality
and deserving advocacy for my low-income
clients. NITA has been incredibly important
in helping me and thereby helping my
clients. I am very thankful that it offers such
important scholarships to people like me!”
