In the South slaves helped the war effort by working the plantations, dug trenches, cooked for soldiers, cleaned up the remains etc..
In the North the Navy was the first to enlist African Americans. In 1862 the Army open up. In all over 200,000 African American served in the Union army. 54th Massachusetts was most famous.
Some escaped slaves served as spies due to their knowledge of the South
With the men away women began to take over their jobs at home. Factory jobs, office jobs, taking over farm duties etc.
Some women worked as spies and nurses. Clara Barton started the American Red Cross.
Other women helped out at camps by cooking and caring for the wounded.
McClellan is replaced by Burnside

BATTLE OFGETTYSBURG
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Grant is now charge of all Union forces
The new plan was for Grant to attack Lee’s army in Virginia and Sherman would crush the deep south
Final phases ofthe war
By mid 1864 Grant was stuck in Petersburg and Sherman was stuck outside Atlanta.
Many Northern Peace Democrats pushed to end the war
In September 1864 Sherman captured Atlanta and burned it to the ground.
Sherman’s army than marched through the South and performed “total war”. They burned, destroyed, killed everything in their 50 mile path.
Marched from Atlanta to Savannah GA. He then turned North.
This left the South in ruins
Sherman’s March to the Sea
Throughout the winter of 1865 Grant continued his fighting outside of Richmond.
On April 2, 1865 the Union took over Richmond
On April 9 1865 Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Court house in Virginia.
This ended the Civil War
