Anticipation. Hope. A
promise fulfilled. All are a part of
the Season of Advent. At
Broadway, our celebration of
Advent has been simply beautiful,
and we have many days left to
enjoy and prepare for the coming
of the Christ Child.
As always, there will be special worship, music,
food and service during Advent. On Sunday, December
11, we can all look forward to Goodie Sunday, a long-
standing tradition at Broadway. Bring your favorite
Christmas “goodie,” whether that treat is an old family
recipe or your favorite store-bought treat, and share it
with the Broadway family. Connections Ministry will
provide hot apple cider and get all of us in the spirit with
special decorations in Fellowship Hall.
Also on December 11, Broadway’s children will
share their gifts and talents with all of us in their
Christmas program at the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. services.
During the 10:10 a.m. Christian Education hour, there
will be an Advent craft celebration in the Christian Life
Center for all. The SERV Sale, the Tree of Hope and
Youth Christmas Wreath sales will also continue on
December 11 (see related articles).
Our vocal and instrumental musicians will share
their gifts on Sunday, December 18. The 9:00 a.m.
service will feature the Chancel Choir and Bells, while
the Broadway Ensemble will provide the music for the
11:15 a.m. service.
Christmas Eve, December
24, will offer four distinct
worship services. At 11:00
a.m., our Service of Carols
and Scripture will be followed
by a soup and sandwich
luncheon in Fellowship Hall.
This service is perfect for
those who are traveling, or
would prefer not to drive after nightfall. At 5:30 p.m., the
Ensemble will provide the music for our Contemporary
Christmas Eve. At 8:00 p.m., the Chancel Choir is
featured in our Traditional Christmas Eve service. Our
Midnight Christmas Eve worship at 11:00 p.m. will tell the
story of Christmas with bluegrass and acoustic
instruments. Communion, candlelight and Silent Night
will be a part of each of our Christmas Eve services.
Christmas Day arrives on Sunday, December 25.
We will celebrate the day with one service at 10:30 a.m.
There will also be a New Year’s Day worship service at
10:30 a.m. There will be no Christian Education classes
on December 25 and New Year’s Day.

A Simply Beautiful Advent Season
At Broadway our Christmas Eve
services – all four of them now – are
beloved standard fare. If you want an
early service because you don’t drive at
night or are heading out of town, join us
at 11am followed by a soup lunch. Our
contemporary service with a children’s
moment is at 5:30 p.m. The Traditional
worship with all the smells and bells is
at 8:00 p.m. And then – for the night
owls – our Bluegrass Christmas is at
11:00 p.m. All of these worship services will include
Candle lighting and Communion, so you won’t miss out
no matter when you attend.
What we do NOT have every year is Christmas Day
falling on Sunday. But this year is the year. On
Christmas Day we will have one service at 10:30 and
no Christian Education. In fact,
that will be the same pattern we
follow on New Year’s Day, as it
also falls on Sunday.
I want to invite families with
children to come to Christmas Day
worship in jammies – that’s right,
after your present opening is over
and the living room is awash with
wrapping paper, just bundle them
up as they are, jammies and all,
and come to the church and sing carols and hear the
Christmas story with the church family.
To us a Savior is born!
ON BROADWAY…. with Pastor Tim Carson
Thanks to the generosity of our members, the Get
On the Bus campaign has reached its goal of
$60,000, and now the search is on for two well-
maintained pre-owned mini-buses, But one piece of
Broadway’s Transportation Ministry won’t be found at
the auto auctions—volunteers to drive our buses!
The 14-passenger buses that we will be
purchasing do not require a special license.
However, bus drivers must be at least 25 years old. If
you are interested in driving one of Broadway’s
buses, please contact Ingrid Luckenbill in the church
office at [email protected] or
445.5312. Ingrid will contact you when the buses are
purchased and volunteer orientation/training is
scheduled.
Any future donations to the Get On the Bus
campaign will be used for bus maintenance. As
discussed during the campaign, any funds raised that
are in excess of the actual purchase price of the
buses will be used for maintenance and storage for
the vehicles.
The Buses Are Ready to Roll—Drivers Needed!
Giving is central to our
Christmas tradition. Broadway’s
Advent theme, Simply Beautiful,
stresses that giving is more than
the exchange of “stuff.” Serving
others is a powerful witness to the
spirit of Advent and the ministry of
Jesus. How can you serve others
this Advent season? Let us count
the ways!
Broadway’s Service Ministry is especially busy
during the Advent season. The Tree of Hope has been
full of cards containing the names of children who are
in need this Christmas. If you chose a card from the
Tree, please return it to church this Sunday, December
11. All gifts will be distributed to the local agencies and
schools during the following week.
How can buying a gift for someone also serve?
Gifts that purchased from our SERV Sale tables on
December 11 are unique, beautiful—and created by
fair trade artisans! Your purchases allow these
artisans to receive a fair price for their work, which
translate into a higher standard of living and the
creates opportunity for others. The SERV tables will
be full of gifts for one more Sunday on December 11.
Visit the Fellowship Hall and find that perfect gift for
someone and feel good about your purchase, too!
Serve and giving at Christmas time can often be
one and the same. On December 18, the Christmas
Special Offering will be collected at all worship
services. This Special Offering supports the work of
the Regional Ministries of the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ), including our own Christian
Church of Mid-America Regional Ministry.
At each of Broadway’s Christmas Eve worship
services, the offering trays will be passed from pew to
pew. But on Christmas Eve, all of our worship
offerings will be designated for two outreach ministries
supported by Broadway. Our long-time international
mission partner, Enlace El Salvador, and Room at the
Inn, our continuing mission to provide a safe and warm
place to sleep for Columbia’s homeless during the
winter, will receive our Christmas Eve gifts.
May the spirit of giving and service follow us into
the new year!

Room at the Inn, Columbia’s
emergency winter shelter, opened
last Sunday, December 4, at the
Unitarian Universalist Church. And
it was just in time. The weather this
week has turned much colder, with
snow and temperatures in the
‘teens later this week.
Broadway will take our turn to
host Room at the Inn beginning
Monday, January 2. The shelter
will call Broadway home through the morning of Sunday,
January 29. While here, the shelter will provide cots,
warmth, food and safety for 50 guests.
Why is Room at the Inn necessary? There are other
shelters in Columbia, but beds are often hard to come by
and for many, the paperwork required for an overnight
stay is a roadblock. Room at the Inn provides cots for
those who cannot meet the requirements for entry at other
shelters. The reason is simple—no one deserves to
freeze to death.
Volunteers will be needed throughout the shelter
season, which began December 4 and continues through
the morning of March 1.
Volunteers can help in variety of
ways, from assisting with set-up
before the guests arrive, to the
evening shifts which will give
you the opportunity to interact
with the guests, to morning
restoration—cleaning and
preparing the church host site
for the coming day’s activities.
The volunteer sign-up can be
accessed through the Room at the Inn website,
www.roomattheinncomo.org.
Broadway will contribute one-half of our Christmas Eve
offering to Room at the Inn this year. If you would also like
to make an in-kind donation, needed items are listed on
the website. You can drop off in-kind donations at any
host site.
Thank you again, Broadway—for opening our doors to
those in the greatest need. We all deserve a warm and
safe place to sleep on a cold Missouri winter’s night. If
you have questions about Room at the Inn, please contact
Debby at [email protected].

Broadway’s 2017 El Salvador Mission Trip is
scheduled for the week of spring break, March 25-31,
2017. The exact destination and work assignment for
the trip will be determined by Enlace, our mission
partner, as we near our departure date.
The cost of the trip can range anywhere from
$1200-$1500; however, Service/Mission and Outreach
Ministry has been able to pay for the on-the-ground
costs for our mission groups for the last two years.
The deadline to join the 2017 mission team is
January 15. If you are interested in the trip. Contact
Debby in the church office or Don Day,
[email protected], to discuss the trip in more
detail.

C A L E N D A R Loving is the true
story of a rural Virginia
couple, who met, fell
in love and married in
the early 1960s. Why
is this couple’s story
worthy of a major
studio film? Because
Mildred and Alfred
Loving (yes, their real
name) were
different—Mildred was
black and Alfred was
white. And in 1960s Virginia, it was illegal for them to marry.
The Loving vs. The Commonwealth of Virginia Supreme Court
decision was a landmark for civil rights in the United States. But
the film is less about the court battles, and more about the people.
Even as they were embroiled in court battles, all the Lovings
wanted was the right to marry, raise their children and grow old
together.
Thanks to a grant from the Pro-Reconciliation/Anti-Racism
(PRAR) Ministry of the Christian Church of Mid-America,
Broadway has received 60 free tickets to the Sunday, December
11, screening at Rag Tag. The tickets are available on a first-
come, first-serve basis, and are available for members of all
Disciples churches in our area. Tickets may be reserved (limit of
two) through the Broadway church office, and must be picked up
at Rag Tag by 12:30 p.m. on December 11. Call Ingrid at
445.5312 if you would like tickets.
Following the movie, all in attendance will be welcome to join a

Broadway Welcomes New Staff Members
Broadway’s
Children’s Ministry
Administrative
Assistant, Emily
Neidenberg, had a
tough choice to
make this fall—study
in France for the
winter, 2017, semester or stay in Columbia.
Hmmm....what to do?
Needless to say, Emily will be leaving Columbia and
her position at Broadway for a semester of study in
Lyon, France. After Emily announced her decision, she
was also nice enough to post the open position at her
sorority house. Jordan Meier, a sorority sister and, by
coincidence, a life-long Disciple of Christ, snapped up
the posting and applied.
Jordan has already begun training with Emily and
Children’s Ministry Coordinator Aimee McBride. Emily’s
final day at Broadway will be this Sunday, December 11.
We will miss her, but
are happy to
welcome Jordan to
the Broadway staff
and family!
It has long been
a goal to provide
administrative support and back-up for the Church
Administrator position. Leslie Robb LeSieur, long-time
office administrator for the Northeast Area and currently
serving as the part-time Executive Director for the Mid-
America Center for Ministry will begin training this month
to provide support for Ingrid. Leslie will work a limited
number of hours per week, but when Ingrid is on
vacation, Leslie will be trained to handle Broadway’s
accounts payable and building use.
Au revoir and traveling mercies to Emily and
welcome to Jordan and Leslie!

The Advent craft party is definitely a family-friendly
event, but adults are also welcome to come and enjoy
the fun and festivities. If you would like to help with the

The Disciples on Campus (DOC) college student
ministry is planning a January 3-7 mission trip to serve in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. DOC ministry leadership is shared by
the youth ministers of Broadway, First Christian and
Olivet Christian Churches.
DOC plans a winter break mission trip each year.
This year’s trip to Tulsa will serve those in need through
existing outreach organizations, adding extra hands and
energy to meet the needs of those in need. Thirteen
college students will be making the trip to Tulsa—
traveling mercies for their upcoming journey and
blessings for their work!

Parents—mark your calendars! On
Wednesday, December 21, from 10:00
a.m.-2:00 p.m., Broadway’s Youth will
offer all of you a chance to get those last
-minute Christmas chores completed—
with no kids to assist!
Parents’ Day Out will give hurried
and harried parents four lovely hours to
wrap up Christmas, have a relaxing
lunch with friends, or just to go home
and take a nap! Youth will be on hand,
with adult helpers as well, to provide supervision and
fun for the kids. Please bring a brown bag lunch for
each child. You can leave your child in
the care of our Youth for the entire four
hours, or just take advantage of the time
to run an hour’s worth of errands.
All donations from Parents Day Out
will be used to defray expenses for the
2017 mission trip. A suggested
donation of $10 per hour is requested
for each family. If you would like more
information, contact Kahlea Wilson at

As members and friends of Broadway, you are
invited to participate in a Broadway tradition of
showing special appreciation to the 17 members of
our staff. Each year a thank-you gift, in the form of a
Christmas check, is presented to each staff
member. Your donation is a gift from the heart, to
show appreciation to our staff for their tireless
commitment to Broadway and its ministries and
members !
If you would like to contribute to this fund, please
mail it to the church to the attention of the Financial
Secretary, or place it in the Sunday morning offering
and label it "Staff Christmas." Gifts to the fund are
combined and distributed evenly to all of the
staff. We need to receive all contributions by
Monday, December 19, so staff checks can be
distributed before Christmas. I hope you will join me
in this opportunity to express appreciation to our
caring and dedicated staff!

Is Church Family Helping Church Family
The death of a church member
or family member is such a time
of grieving and loss. And as
plans are made for funeral
services or celebrations of life,
some of life's practical issues
emerge: What to do about food
or refreshments for guests? How
can we make family and guests
feel welcome in God's house?
This is when the Bereavement
Ministry steps in with the answers to
these important issues. Dixie Fisher and a large
group of volunteers, anywhere from 30 to 40 people,
are available to attend to details and help make
plans. They can also meet with family members to
make sure their needs and special requests are met.
Sometimes it is a reception of cookies and punch
and oftentimes it is a full meal of main dish,
vegetables, salad , bread and dessert. Dixie and her
team are flexible in what kind of food is needed. As
we all know, it is soothing and strengthening to sit
around a table together and share a meal. It allows us
the time to demonstrate our love and support for one
another.
This ministry has long been a part of Broadway
Christian Church's caring and love for their members
and their families and for guests of our church. We
are known for our delicious meals and soothing
service and care. As CareLink has formed, the
Bereavement ministry joins as
"church family cares for church
family." And Dixie has been a
leader in this effort for a long
time. She goes down her long
list of volunteers and pulls a
team together to respond with
short notice.
Dixie always needs more
volunteers so we welcome you
to join the CareLink team and
help with bereavement meals and
services. As a volunteer you can choose the times
that you are most available so this gives you plenty of
flexibility.
This is your opportunity to show our Christian love
and caring for those who are suffering. Please
contact Dixie at 474-3417 or call the church office and
add your name to the list.
