EducationAfghanistan's literacy rate is 30%.Education has always been the firstpriority of the villagers and TIE.

TIE pays 25 teachers in 10 villages,educating more than 1000 children, over2/3 of which are girls.

Zohra travelled to Afghanistan tooversee construction.

350 Farza girls are eager for "theirschool" to open in 2012.

Solar is Hot!Solar saves money and trees, as wood isvery expensive. Solar cooking eliminatessmoke inhalation, a major health hazardfor women.TIE volunteers built and delivered 90solar ovens and 200 smaller solarCookits to Kabul. Another 650 Cookitsare on their way to Kabul.

TIE classes include science, math, English,computers and art. Our students dream ofbecoming engineers, teachers and doctors.

Play Strategy!Play increases school enrollment andattendance. Children are happier andhealthier. Attending school becomesfun!

TIE taught solar cooking to 9 couplesfrom three refugee camps and gave themovens to try. Followup visits found theyare using the ovens to cook rice and heatwater to the point where it becomesclean!

Thanks to Peet's Coffee for the mylarcoffee bags used as reflectors for thecookits! Help is on the way!

To Date: * 3 Soccer fields* 8 Soccer programs: (5 for boys, 3for girls) * Playground equipment at 3 schools(1 for boys, 2 for girls) * 3 Volleyball courts

Soccer is a rare treat for Afghan girls!

Volunteers packed 20,000 packages ofrice (120,000 meals) and 300 boxes ofclothing that leave for Kabul today.

Economic DevelopmentPoplar trees are more profitable thanopium! When the trees mature, the treesare used to build homes. Young poplartrees produce cuttings farmers can sell.Afghanistan's forests were cut down bythe Soviets and Taliban for firewoodand to eliminate hiding places. Only 2% of the country is forested today.

TIE has loaned farmers 16,000cuttings to start their groves.
