residenceonCampCreeknearPreston.RepresentativeTimWalzhasbeeninvitedtobeourguestatthisevent.ThepotluckandopportunityforconversationwithRepWalzwilltakeplacefrom11amto1pm.Meetandexchangeideaswithotherenvironmental/con-servationgroupsandgovernmentagenciesthathaveaninterestinwhatistakingplacewiththecurrentFarmBillandnewsoilconservationprogramsthatwillbeavailable.ThiswillalsobeanopportunitytosamplethecurrenthotdishbroughtbyTim–therecipethatheentersincompetitionwithotherMinnesotalegislatorseachyear.Sincethis isapotluck,pleaseplantobringeitherasidedishordesserttoshare.PlantocomeearlyandenjoytheuseofthePrestonbikeandwalking trail alongCampCreek, a visit to theNational TroutCenter inPreston,orspendyoursparetimebeforeandafterthemeeting to fish the recently habitat improved length ofCampCreekfromHunterRoaddownstreamtotheRootRiver.Whateveryouchoosetodo–COMEandENJOYtheday!!!ToreachMike’splace,takeUS52southfromPreston. AfteryoucrosstheRootRiver,goahalfmileupthehill.You’llseeawhite fenceand large farmgateonyour right– that’s theentrancetohisdrive.

Streamrestorationseasoniswellunderwayinourarea.ConstructioniswrappinguponWillowCreek,outsideofPreston,andthestreamsideveg-etationisstartingtogrowin.WitheasyaccessfromtheCounty15bridge,thisshouldbeapopularstretch.Atwo-milelongsectionofMillCreekhasbegunconstructionanditshouldcontinueforquitesometime.Theprairieseedingsonthestretchupstreamthatwasconstructedtwoyearsagoarelookingfantasticandstreamchangesweexpectedtodeveloparehappening.AccesswillbefromthesnowmobilebridgeupstreamofMN30.We’reinneedofalargenumberoftrees,soifyouhaveawoodlotnearChatfieldthatneedsclearing,pleaseletusknow.ConstructionisinprogressaswellonNewburgCreek,atributaryofWisel.NewburgusedtobeafineBrookTroutstreamandanimportantspawningsiteforWisel.Thelandownerwilleventuallyturnourriparianprairierestorationintoaseveral-acreOakSavannah.Whencom-plete,thisshouldbealittlejewel.Constructionwill startshortlyonBlagsveldtCreek,a tinyBrookTroutstream in thesamegeneralareaasNewburg.Thisyear’sLessard-SamsbillwassignedbyGovernorDayton,sowe’rebeginningtheprocessofgettingourSouthBranchRootRiverprojectfromPrestondownstreamofftheground.

InearlyJuly,DougDeitermanandVaughnSnookoftheDNRinvitedmetoparticipateinarapidhabitatassessmentonaLong-TermMonitoringstationofTroutRun. I’vefishedthissectionprettyregularlyovertheyears.DNRSummerInternGarretPalmeralsoparticipated.Thehabitatassessments,whicharerepeatedregularlytotrackchangesovertime,trytore-cordvariousphysicalfeaturesthatcorrelatestronglywithtroutsizeandpopulationfigures.Populationassessmentsaredoneinthespringandfall.Wemadetwopassesthruthestation.Onthefirst,wemeasuredpool lengths,widthanddepthatmid-point,andsameforriffles.Alongtapemeasureandmarkedoffpolesareusedtogetthemeasurements.Onthesecondpasswemeasuredvegetationareaonthestreambottom,rockcoverarea,overhangingvegetation,depthofoverhangingbanks,andareasdeeperthan2’andareasdeeperthan3’.Myownobservationfromthedaywasthewayoverheadcanopycoverreducestheamountofin-streamvegetation,evenforthesamebottomcompositionandsimilarflow.Asweworkedthruthestream,DougandVaughndescribedhowsomehabitatfeaturesarestronglycorrelatedwithoverallpopulation,whileotherscorrelatetopresenceorabsenceoflargertrout.Theyalsorelatedtheirexperiencesinshockingthisexactstretchofwater;theyknowwherethebigfishareusuallyfound.Intheend,giventherawmeasurementsandDougandVaughn’sdescriptionofthehabitattofishrelationships,myfishingresultsandwhattheassessmentwillsayareinprettycloseagreement.

July, 2015 HTU Board Meeting Minutes
In attendance: Frank Angelotti, Phil Pankow, Carl Berberich, Ray Ricketts and Paul Krolak.
• Secretary minutes from June BOD meeting were approved.
• We used 40 small HTU fly boxes for TUNE camp attendees. We have ordered more HTU fly boxes from the supplier we purchased them from last year.
• Our Think Bank merchant account has been closed
• We believe a separate TIC meeting is needed in the near future. Phil and our youth program coordinator will set that up.
• Summer HI update
- RFPs are under work for Lynch creek and East Indian creek
- Willow creek is nearing completion
- Mill creek is underway
- Newberg creek is underway
- Prairie grass is up on Mill creek project from 2 years ago
- Blagsveldt creek project starts soon
- Trout Run brushing is completed, wrecked trailer is removed
- South Branch Root lessard funding has been approved
• A doctoral candidate, Jessica Fulgoni, from Southern Illinois University is go-ing to carry out a benthic invertebrate survey on streams we have improved in SE MN.
• TUNE camp is finished, senior fishing day in Lanesboro is finished. We fed 135 people at that event.
• Our 2016 Banquet is booked for 04/09 so keep that date open!

DebGroebneroftheDepartmentofNaturalResources(DNR)MinnAquaprogramofSouthernMinnesotaorganizedanotherwonderfuladult/youthpairingweekend.Shecreatedaprogramfortwentypairswhichincludedobtainingrods,reels, lineandstarterequipment for theparticipants tokeepandtheplace tohold it.Thisisherjob,butIthinkshewouldagreethatitisalsoherpassiontosetupandruntheseprograms.VolunteersfromHiawathaTroutUnlimited(HTU),theDNRFisher-iesstaff,othersfromTUorganizations,andsingleindividualsgavetheirtimeandtalentstoteachalltheadult/youthpairsthebasicsofflyfishing.

(TheUltimateNature Experience)Campputtogetheranotherfantasticeventforkidsages13to17.T.U.N.E.Campisaweekendthatteachesmultipleoutdoorskillsanddisciplinesincludingflyfishingandflytying,shootingtrapandrifles,archery,waterecology,ropescourses,plantidentification,astrology,andmoretogivekidsarichexperienceintheoutdoors,abouttheoutdoors.T.U.N.ECamphadahostofcharacterslikeVicwhotaughtsur-vivalskillsandcompasswork;Hiawatha,MNMTU,andTCTUChapters;andmanyotherTUorganizationsand individualswhohelpedwithflycastingandflytying.DeanfromLaughingTrout,aTwinCitiesorganizationthatgivestheirtimeandfliesinspades,wasalsoonhandtoteachthekidsthebeautifulartofflytying.Thekidswentawaywithanamazingnewsetofoutdoorskillsthatwillgivethemafullerlifeandmaybeanewcareergoal.
Chester(Chet)DanielsandafewotherindividualsalongwiththeLanesboroFisher-iesandHatcherystaffstartedSeniorFishingDayoverthirtyyearsago.Alongwithmanyofhisownfamilymembers,includinghislovelywifeBetty,heorganizedandsetupthiseventbycallingseveralseniorcentersinSoutheastMinnesotaandcoor-dinatedwiththeDNRFisheriestodepositfishintheSylvanParkspondsinLanes-boro,Minnesota.Chetwasthereagainthisyear tokeepthingsontrackandan-otherveteranofmanyyears,AlBierley,returnedwithhisbrotherandfathertohelptheseniorsfish,baithooks,andbringasmiletotheirfacestalkingaboutoldtimes.MybeautifulwifeShellycookedforallthevolunteersandmadenewfriendsaswell.Agreattimewashadbyall.
Iwantyoutotaketwothingsawayfromthispiece;one,ifyoueverquestionwhyyougiveyourmoneyandtimetoTU,thisiswhy.IamproudtobeassociatedwitheachandeverymemberofHTUandTUingeneral,theirfamiliesthatsupportthem,andthecommunitytheylivein.Iamproudtobeassociatedwitheachandeveryoneofyouinthegreatestcountryonearth.Secondly,be-lieve inyourpassionsnomatterwhattheyareandsupportothers intheirs.Without instillingthatpas-sioninouryouth,thefuturewillbeverybleakforourstreams,riversandtheGREAToutdoors.GodBless.
