The Kingly SucceSSion / 1. Eberhard Anheuser: Son of a German wine family, he came to the new country and became a soapmaker, candlemaker, brewer. / 2. Adolphus Busch: Born in Mayence-on-the-Rhine, he was the youngest of 21 sons. Married Lilly Anheuser and co-founded Anheuser-Busch with his father-in-law. / 3. August A. Busch Sr.: He got the Brewery through Prohibition and the Depression by diversifying into ice cream, baker’s yeast, and soda pop. / 4. Adolphus Busch III: President and CEO of Anheuser-Busch until his death of a cerebral hemhorrage in 1946. / 5. August A. Busch Jr.: Better known as Gussie or The King, he took his big brother’s place and by 1957 had built A-B into the world's largest brewery. Drafted the Clydesdales into service, bought the St. Louis Cardinals, trained his own chimps and elephants at his Grant’s Farm estate. / 6. August Busch III: He was also known as Augie, Augie-Doggie, The Third, and Three Sticks. Dropped out of college, took to the brewery business, wrestled control from his father, incoherent with grief after the death of his youngest daughter. Donated Mike IV, a live Bengal tiger, to be mascot of Louisiana State University. / 7. August Busch IV: Also known as The Fourth, he was the last Busch to reign, with a life that could script 10 soap operas. Launched the famous Budweiser frogs campaign. Fought InBev’s hostile takeover until 2008, when 156 years of Busch rule ended. / 8. William Kurt Busch: He’s better known as Billy. The king of Kräftig, he just won’t let his family’s heritage die. Loved growing up on Grant’s Farm; sowed his wild oats early, then married and had seven kids; breeds polo ponies and taught his son Gussie to play the game; tests his award-winning lager against German purity standards.

The claraS and Their dynaSTieS / 13. Clara Busch von Gontard: Married Baron Paul von Gontard, president of Mercedes-Benz and a secret witness in a German Supreme Court case; the media nicknamed him “The Man in the Mask.” A later von Gontard, Adalbert Sr.—who dressed his chimps in dinner jackets and seated them at the dinner table with mugs of Budweiser—married Beatrice Busch, inter-twining the families a second time. Peter von Gontard is the city attorney of Huntleigh, the wealthiest city in the nation. This July, four von Gontard brothers—Alex, Andrew, Adie, and Peter—opened The Eberhard, a Dallas restaurant and bar, in their great-great-grandfather’s honor. / 14. Clara Busch Orthwein: Married Percy Orthwein, founder of D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles ad agency. Their son James, who took over D’Arcy, bought the New England Patriots. Orthweins tend to live in Huntleigh, play polo, and engage in philanthropy.

The rebelS / 9. Sam Edison Woods: A Texan engineer who made regular trips to Berlin to keep President Franklin D. Roosevelt informed about German “technology.” It’s said Woods also collected damning intelligence on Bernard Berghaus, who was married to Lily von Gon-tard…then married Lily’s aunt, Wilhelmina “Minnie” Busch. / 10. Drummond Busch Hadley: A poet-cowboy who rescued William Randolph Hearst’s famous Gray Ranch and restored it as a working cattle ranch. / 11. Carlota “Lotsie” Hermann Holton: A member of the Explorers Club, she’s climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, hiked the Inca Trail, and waded through elephant dung. / 12. Laura X: Off the charts, in more ways than one. Granddaughter of Percy Orthwein’s brother William, she was a debutante who was more interested in civil rights and feminism than frills. Ditched her surname and moved to Berkeley, where she led a campaign to make marital rape illegal.
