General Information
1
The following data are the result oftests on standard productionPufferPak load break switches. The switches were tested perapplicable portions of IEEE, ANSI,NEMA, and other industry stan-dards including:
• ANSI C37.71 Standard forSubsurface Load InterruptingSwitches.
• ANSI C37.72 Standard forPadmount Load InterruptingSwitches.
• ANSI C37.60 Standard for FaultInterrupters
• ANSI/IEEE 386 Standard forSeparable Connectors andBushings.
• IEC 265 International Standardsfor Load Interrupting Switches.
• ASTM D-2472 Specification forCommercial Type ElectricalGrade SF6.
• ANSI C57.12.28 Standard forPadmount Enclosures
Tests were conducted at recog-nized, independent power testinglaboratories, including KEMA inHolland. Test results were verifiedby oscillograms and high-speed
movies. As required by ANSI stan-dards, all tests were performed ina specific sequence without anymaintenance to the switch or SF6.Tests were conducted at 15.5, 27,and 38 kV levels on approximately75 different switches including 2-,3-, and 4-way configurations.Tosimulate actual service conditions, the tests were run at various SF6gas pressures and with switchesmounted in typical subsurface andpadmount applications.
Switch Design
PufferPak SF6 switches aredesigned and constructed toprovide economical, safe and reli-able switching in a small, light-weight package. Using SF6 forinsulation and arc-interruptioneliminates space, weight andmaintenance costs, as well ashazards associated with vacuum, air or oil-filled equipment. In addi-tion, PufferPak switches provideimproved interrupting and opengap performance.
Switches can be mounted in anyposition and any environment, including Class 1, Division 1,hazardous locations. Maintenanceis minimized with sealed construc-tion that is unaffected by contami-nation, rodents, or floods.
Switch components are containedin a welded, mild or stainless steeltank factory-filled with SF6, elimi-nating exposed live parts andproviding complete deadfront operation.
SF6 Dielectric
Sulfur hexaflouride gas (SF6)contributes to the safety, insulatingand load-interrupting performanceof PufferPak switches. SF6 is non-flammable, non-toxic, colorlessand odorless. At 0 PSIG, SF6 has21⁄2 times the insulating quality ofdry air. Under moderate pressure, insulating and arc-extinguishingqualities increase.
PufferPak switches are shippedpre-filled with SF6, and are electri-cally tested and leak-tested toinsure proper operation. Inside theswitch tank, a special absorbentneutralizes any possible arc by-products, reducing field mainte-nance to an occasional check ofthe color-coded pressure gauge.
Puffer Action
The PufferPak switch capitalizeson the pressure/insulation curve ofSF6, as well as the electronega-tive characteristics of the gas andits ability to absorb and transferheat and free electrons rapidlyfrom an arc.
To amplify the arc-extinguishingabilities of SF6, the switch incorpo-rates a patented, self-generatingpuffer action that forces a pressur-ized stream of SF6 through thecontact area during switching. Thisincreased pressure increases theinsulation level while simultane-ously cooling and extinguishing thearc. In the full-open position, thecontacts are separated by a 3"open gap, giving a 200 kV BILflashover withstand.
Contact System
PufferPak switches feature self-aligning pin-and-socket contactsconstructed of silver-plated copperwith tungsten-copper arcing tips.Contacts are designed to preventdamage to main contact surfacesduring operation, and provideincreased contact pressure withincreased currents in the closedposition.
PufferPak switches incorporateself-cleaning, wiping-type contactsalong with Belleville washers andlocking fasteners at critical currentconnections for long life and maintenance-free operation.
Design Features C e rtified Tests and Pe r fo r m a n c e
2 3
SF6 Puffer action is self-generating using theSF6 contained in the switch tank.Arc extinc-tion occurs at first current zero.
Contact movement createsthe puffer action whichmomentarily increases thedielectric strength and arc-extinguishing properties ofSF6 at the time it is neededduring load break switching.During contact opening (Fig.B), the puffer action forces apressurized stream of SF6through the contact area, cooling and extinguishing thearc at the first current zero.During contact closure (Fig.D), the puffer cone com-presses the column of SF6ahead of the contact, eliminat-ing pre-strike contact damage. In the full-open position (Fig.C), a three-inch gap provides200 kV BIL withstand andpermits DC testing.

Application and Practical Usageof SF6
The application of gas-filled equip-ment requires some knowledge ofthe practical handling of SF6. Thefollowing considerations can helpin establishing the proper operat-ing procedures.
A. Availability andSpecifications
SF6 is readily available from anyof several suppliers, including
Allied Chemical and Air Products. The use of commercial-grade SF6per ASTM D-2472 is recom-mended and may be obtained incylinder sizes ranging from 6 to115 lbs. SF6 is a colorless, odor-less, non-toxic, and non-flammablegas.
B. Operating and Maintenance
PufferPak switches have beendesigned and evaluated using thelevels established by ANSI C37.71standards, which assures thenormal life of the equipment with-out any maintenance. In practice,as long as the design ratings arenot exceeded, the only mainte-nance required is the regularmonitoring of SF6 pressure andchecking of the equipment forproper working condition. Theswitch is equipped with a color-coded pressure gauge which indi-cates the quantity of SF6 gas andthe quality of the sealing system.
C. Field Adding of SF6
Switches are shipped factory filledwith SF6 to approximately 10PSIG. Although gauge pressurevaries with temperature, the switchshould always be operated withinits normal pressure range of 2-15PSIG. If field addition of SF6becomes necessary, add the SF6through the fill valve provided onthe tank.
