THE HISTORY OF A LEGEND

Since its inception, 60 years ago, the challenge to build a better vehicle has been the driving orce behind this company.

Late 1930s-LelandJames,thepresidentoftruckingcompany,Freightways(CF)buildhisrsttruckusinglightweightaluminuminsteadofsteel.

1940-JameshelpedestablishFreightwaysManufacturingCompanytoproducethevehicles.

1942-ThemanufacturingcompanychangeditsnametoFreightlinerCorporation,thusgivingbirthtothecompanythatwouldbecomeNorthAmericasleadingheavy-dutyvehiclemanufacturer.1947-AmanufacturingfacilityinPortland,Oregonwasopened.

1950 - The Hyster Company of Portland was the rst private carrierto order aFreightliner.

1960 - Production volumes grew from 116 vehicles per year to 931 and 6,206in1970.

1981-Daimler-BenAGpurchasedFreightlinerfromConsolidatedFreightways.Inthefollowingdecadevehiclesalesmorethandoubled.

1992-Daimler-BenhelpedFreightlinerreachthetopoftheNorthAmericanheavy-dutytruckmarket.

1995-ThepurchaseofOshkoshCorporationschassisdivisiontofoundtheFreightlinerCustom Chassis Corporation. Freightliner acquired reghting/emergen cy vehicl emanufacturerAmericanLaFrance.

1997-TheheavytruckdivisionofFordMotorCompanywaspurchasedandsoonaftertheSterlingbrandwaslaunched.

1998-BecameamemberofthenewlyformedDaimler-Chrysler.2000-ThepurchaseofWesternStarTrucks.

2003-ThelaunchoftheNorthAmericanUnimog.
