rSUMMARY
r r
The Olive-Preston gold property is comprised of seven leased mining*.
claims located in the Mine Center - Bad Vermillion area, District of
Rainy River.
l. Mine Center, Ontario, has a history of gold production from the early
p 1900's, in which gold was mined from narrow quartz-carbonate veins
hosted by quartz porphry intrusions. The area has seen repeated
P attention through the years but never leading to production on any
sizable or economic scale.
^ Gold on the Olive-Preston property is associated with a narrow,
P quartz-carbonate vein system conformable to a hosting band of
intermediate tuffs. The vein pinches to 0.5" and swells to a width
[ of 5.0' (quartz blow outs) but averages 7.5" throughout the mine
workings. On surface the vein system has been traced for a strike
length of 2,200 feet and down dip only the extent of the underground
T workings (250 feet).
Dewatering was completed to determine the dimensions and grade ofri any ore shoots, through channel sampling, surveying and geological
p mapping. Many low grade ore shoots were discovered on all three
levels along with two economic sections, described as follows:
T (i) First Level: 4040 East to 3900 East, 125 feet long, 3 feet
wide grading 0.30 ounce of gold per ton.

1.0 INTRODUCTION ):
Noront Resources Ltd. commissioned E. Ludwig and Associates to
manage the 1987 dewatering program of the Olive Mine workings.
This included channel sampling, geological mapping and compilation
of results along with recommendations pertaining to further exploration
work.r1 Material used in this report was obtained from government reports
P and documents stored in the assessment files in the office of the
resident geologist in Kenora and reports supplied by Homestake
[ Explorations Ltd. Data presented on maps is based on observations
P made underground while geological mapping and channel sampling.
' The author is familiar with the property through examinations made
P in 1983 while completing an under graduate thesis on the surface
geology of the property. In 1986 the author performed a
[ metallurgical test on the vein material, where 30 tons of material
P were removed grading 2.75 ounces per ton

2.0 PROPERTY DESCRIPTION, LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY
Location of the property is 35 miles east of Fort Francis, Ontario, in
the Mine Center area, (NTS Reference: 52C/10, 48045'N, 92 040'W), with
highway 11 providing good access to the southern portion of the property
(Fig. 1). The main Olive shaft is located towards the northwest
boundary and is accessible by gravel road, 2.5 miles north of highway
11.
Two electrical power lines, and the main CP railway line traverse the
property in an east-west direction.
The seven claim group, which was the focal point of the 1987 work, are
all currently under 21-year lease arrangements with the Province Of
Ontario, and are recorded in the name of HSK Minerals Limited (Fig. 2).

p The property was discovered by "Doc" Gardener in 1885 (O.B.M. Vol. 8,
1 Pt. 2, 1897) and has a detailed history since. A summary of exploration -
P and development work of the Olive-Preston Mine, is as follows:t
1896: Sold to W. A. Preston of the Preston Gold Mining Company
t- - . of Ontario Ltd. Property transferred to a subsidiary company,
r Olive Gold Company of Seine River Limited (O.B.M. Vol. 8, Pt. 2,
1897). . .
l 1RQ7l 1900 - O l ive Gold Company put down a 700 inclined shaft to 251 feet.
p Levels at 60, 135 and 250 feet, with 867 of drifting on the
first level, 290 feet drifted on the second level and 177 feet
P on the third level. A two-stamp mill was increased to 10 theni
25. Operations ceased on June 1900. Production from 1897 tor~
l 1900 was 2,699 ounces of gold from 6,925 tons (0.39 ounce of

ri v 1958-59: Property acquired by Olympus Mines Limited. Workings dewatered
to approximately 145 feet below surface where a skip which was
L derailed in the 1942 fire, was encountered in the shaft. Work i;
p stopped early in 1959( Canadian Mines Handbook 1959).
1964-65: Olympus Mines Limited optioned the property to Proteus Minerals
[ ' Limited. Eleven drill holes totalling 3,000 feet, was carried
out along the structure (O.D.M. Circular #13, 1971).
1979: Claims staked by R. Pitkanen and optioned to Sherrit Gordon Mines
l Limited, who completed one drill hole totalling 922 feet.
p the Port Arthur Copper Company mined 26,509 l bs. of copper from a small
1 massive sulfide lense near the southeast corner of the property.

r 5.1 REGIONAL GEOLOGY
The property occurs within the southwestern portion of the Superior
[ . Province, on the boundary between the Wabigoon Subprovince and the
p Quetico Subprovince, seperated by the Quetico Fault (Fig. 3) (Fumerton
^ - 1980).
T In the Mine Center region, the Olive-Preston Gold Mine, occurs in a
wedge shaped fault block of greenstone, boundaries of this block being
[ the Quetico Fault to the north and the Seine River Fault to the south.
P Major Lithologies of this region include, steeply dipping mafic to
^ intermediate metavolcanic rocks intercalated with gabbroic sills
P (possible extrusive origin), turbidite metasedimentary rocks, felsic t
metavolcanic rocks and iron formation. These rocks are cut by grano-
[ diorite, monzonite and trondhjemite intrusives. Metamorphisim is
varible, regionally grading from lower greenschist to upper amphibolite
facis, which is characterized by two periods, first a prograde event,
P secondly retrograde metamorphisim (Pirie et al. 1978). Poulsen et al.w -
(1980), interpeted the rocks in the Mine Center-Atikokan region to be
[ inverted by nappe-like folds. Later work by Poulsen (1983) indicated
axial planes of these folds are southeastwards and create antiforms
i. and synforms which do not reflect the stratigraphic order. Regional
r formations are summarized in table 1.

r ^.-5.2 PROPERTY GEOLOGY
l The property is underlain by rocks of Archean age, trending east, dipping^
p steeply north. The top of the stratigraphy is north, determined from
1 pillowed basalt flows. Bedrock consists of alternating mafic, intermediate
f and felsic metavolcanic rocks with interbedded tuffaceous units.L
Directly north, the Quetico Faulttrends in an easterly direction, with
[ rocks south of the fault developing a parallel bedding plane foliation.
p To the south, the property is bounded by a 1 mile thick unit of
1 meatmorphosed granitic intrusive rocks, monzonitic to trondhjemite in
P composition. In the summer of 1983 geologists of Homestake Explorations;v
Limited mapped the property using grid lines cut at 300-foot centers.
! The 1983 program defined the lithologies in the vicinity of the Olive
p- Gold Mine, as being comprised of a mafic volcanic-clastic sedimentary
1 package, up to 4,500 feet thick.
T Underground, two units of the above package were observed a) intermediate (.
tuff, which displays a bedding plane foliation, striking N700 E and
[ dipping on average 70 0 north, and b) chlorite schist which appears to
be the derivative of andesite flows, striking N 70 0 E.
Gold is found in a narrow quartz-carbonate vein system conformable
f" to the hosting band of intermediate tuffs. The vein pinches to 0.5"k .
and swells to a width of 5.0' (quartz blow outs) but averages 7.5"
i through out the mine workings.
West of the shaft, located on all three levels is a cross fault which
' ' trends N 40 0 W and displaces the stratigraphy by an average of one foot.

rf ^~ 6.0 SAMPLING OF THE OLIVE MINE WORKINGS
P 6.1 SAMPLING METHODS
A program of sampling was undertaken to locate ore-grade shoots over
i mining widths and lengths.
Three types of sampling were undertaken, these were:
*- i) Grab Samples - These were taken where chip and channel samples were
p impossible. Locations of these samples include,i
second level-west stope (muck samples) and down the
i shaft, testing for gold content in the vein (Map 4).
p ii) Chip Samples - These were taken along the strike of the vein, to
determine the gold content of the vein only. Chip
T sample results were related to channel sample results
to verify gold anomalies.
l iii) Channel Samples - These were taken across the back of each drift
p where attainable. Each sample was 2" wide and
0.5" deep, taken acroos a width of 3 feet and
T 5 feet where possible. Samples were taken at
5-foot intervals.

One main ore shoot exists, which can be traced between all three levels
l in the west drifts. Between the first and second levels, mining has 5
removed all viable ore, leaving behind an estimated 1,100 tons of broken i l ore in the west stope. Sampling of this broken ore indicated an
r average grade of 0.317 ounce of gold per ton, from 12 muck samples.
An ore calculation can be made for the material between the second
[ and third level: Average length: 120 feetWidth: 3 feet

[ Therefore a total mineral inventory in all three catagories, proven,
possible and probalble, would be 9,360 tons at a recoverable grade
' i of 0.327 ounce of gold per ton

r r8.0 RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
rThe Olive Mine workings were established through out the years, to
P produce gold from a narrow quartz-carbonate vein, which in sections,t
was extremely high grade. Mining methods used were applicable for
[ such a task, maintaining a mining width of 2-3 feet in the shrinkage
P stopes.
Today, the past mining methods, are extremely costly, therefore not
[ justifying a mining operation, unless grades are consistently high
grade.
L Recommended is a program of diamond core drilling to explore at depth
P and along strike for ore which may be wider and in greater quantity,
to substantiate a mining operation.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Noront Resources Ltd. carried out an eleven (11) hole, 6,153 foot diamond drill program on the Preston - Olive gold property held by HSK Minerals Limited. This program was completed in June 1988 as a follow up to an underground evaluation of the Olive workings.
This report presents the results of recent data with previous drilling.

The Preston - Olive gold property is located 35 miles east of Fort Francis and 5 miles west of Mine Center, Ontario in the Kenora Mining District (fig. 1).
The property is accessible by a gravel road which extends one mile north of Highway 11.

3.0 PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
The property consists of 55 mineral claims comprising 4 patents, 6 leased claims and 45 unpatented mineral claims all located in the Little Turtle Lake (Map G2682) and Porter Inlet (Map G2693) areas in the Kenora Mining Division (fig. 2). All of the unpatented mineral claims have 200 day credits.

4.0 EXPLORATION HISTORY
The following is a brief history of the Olive - Preston property.
1885 : Discovered by "Doc" Gardener.
1897-1900 : Olive Gold Co. sunk shaft to 251 feet, levels at 60, 135, 245 feet with 867, 290 and 177 feet of drifting. A two stamp mill was increased to 10 then 25.Production: 2699 oz. of gold from 6925 tons (0.39 oz/ton).
1935 : Olive Gold Mines dewatered old workings.
1937 : 20 ton amalgam mill installed, 1000 ft. of drifting on second level.Production: 50 oz of gold from 330 tons (0.15 oz/ton).
1942 : Property leased to Golderel Mining Co. Ltd.Workings dewatered to 135 ft. level and 20 ton millinstalled.Hoist and mill destroyed by fire.Production: 823 oz. gold from 2169 tons (0.38oz/ton).
1958-1959 : Olympus Mines Limited dewatered to 145 feet.
1963-1964 : Proteus Minerals Ltd. completed an 11 hole, 3,000 ft. drill program.
1979 . Sherritt Gordon Limited completed an 11 hole, 3,000 ft. drill program
1983 : Homestake Explorations Limited completed a program of airborne geophysics, linecutting, ground geophysics, mapping, trenching and 44 diamond drill holes totalling 8,286 feet.
1985 . Homestake completed a soil geochemical survey over known geophysical and geological trends.
1986 : Metallurgical test carried out by private contractor on surface vein material.

5.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE AREAr- f1 The property is located in the southwestern portion of the Superior ^ Province in the Wabigoon Subprovince. The Preston - Olive property is*~ located in the Mine Center area which lies within a wedge shaped
greenstone fault block along the southwestern margin of the Wabigoon subprovince. The northern boundary of this block is the Quetico Fault
^~ and the southern boundary is the Seine River - Rainy River Fault. This east-west trending fault network is associated with a 3 to 6 mile thick sequence of volcanic rocks which extend for 300 miles,
^ from Rainy Lake in the west through Atikokan to the Beardmore and Geraldton areas in the east.
r~ The Mine Center area is underlain by steeply north dipping, east-- west trending mafic and intermediate metavolcanic rocks with
intercalated gabbroic sills, turbiditic metasediments, felsic volcanics and iron formation cut by granodioritic, monzonitic and
trondhjomitic intrusions. The rocks are metamorphosed to assemblages characteristic of the lower to upper amphibolite facies and are
^ folded into antiforms and synforms which do not reflect the stratigraphic order (Poulsen, 1983).
p The majority of the gold deposits in the Mine Center area occur asf discontinuous tabular quartz-carbonate veins in ductile shear zones.
These veins have been exploited intermittently in the area since 1893^ and range from a few inches to a few feet in width. Approximately 90**
of these gold occurrences most commonly occur in acidic intrusiverocks ranging from trondhjemite to quartz monzonite. A second type ofgold occurrences are shear zone related vein systems hosted in
"~ metavolcanic rocks.

\ The property is underlain by an east-west trending, northerly L dipping assemblage of mafic-felsic metavolcanic rocks containing
volcanoclastic and metasedimentary units.
Felsic metavolcanic rocks predominate in the southern portion of the property characterized by massive and foliated quartz eye rhyolite
i with intercalated units of felsic and lapilli tuff.
The felsic assemblage grades northward into a sequence of mafic ^ metavolcanic rocks with intercalated units of felsic to intermediate
tuffaceous units. The mafic rocks consist of generally fine grained to coarse grained basalt which is metamorphosed to display gabbroic or amphibolitic textures. It is uncertain whether these mafic rocks
represent flows as many of the textures suggest mafic intrusive similarities. Locally the mafic rocks are severely foliated and sheared developing talc-chlorite schists.
The intercalated tuffaceous rocks within the mafic assemblage form generally narrow continuous units. The intermediate variety are described as feldspar " ash, quartz-feldspar ash, and quartz-
"~ carbonate ash tuff. The felsic varieties are described as rhyolitic and lapillis. Often the intermediate and felsic tuffs grade into one another along strike. A 2,800 foot long gold bearing cherty-carbonate
foliated tuff within the center of the mafic assemblage hosts the Preston-Olive gold mineralization. Similar cherty tuff units occur elsewhere on the property and have potential for hosting gold
^ mineralization.
The Quetico Fault Zone runs through - Little Turtle Lake on the northern portion of the property boundary. This east-west trending
— fault is a major structure which can be traced for 180 miles. Many of the rocks on the property have developed a foliation parallel to the Quetico Fault. Within the more competent felsic tuff units this has
^. developed into intense shearing.

7.O MINERALIZATIONr
The majority of gold exploration and production to date has occurred on the Olive Vein Zone. Here gold occurs closely associated with quartz veins and veinlets conformable to a sheared felsic tuff horizon.
The Olive vein is the most extensive displaying pinching and swelling along strike varying in width from l to 8 inches. This vein dips steeply north at approximately 75 degrees. Several parallel veinlets occur associated to the Olive vein which combine to form an overall mineralized zone varying from 1.5 to 3.5 feet thick.
The gold is fine grained and generally occurs along foliation planes associated with approximately l* to 3\ sulphides. Pyrite is dominant with minor amounts of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite.
Gold values from sampling along the 2,200 foot long Olive vein range from trace to 5.4 oz./ton. The better values are associated to the thicker portions of vein. On surface the most significant area of enrichment is located east of the Olive Main shaft where a 250 foot length of the Olive vein averaged 0.52 oz. gold/ton, over an average width of 3.5 feet. It is from this area that a 30 ton metallurgical sample was extracted grading 2.75 oz. gold/ton in 1986.
Recorded gold production from the property amounts to 3,572 ounces intermittently recovered from underground operations between 1897 to 1942. This production was recovered from 9,424 tons of Olive vein material representing an average grade of 0.38 oz./ton.
In 1984 an 8,286 foot diamond drill program tested the near surface potential of the Olive vein zone with a view to develope sufficient material to open cut mine and transport to a custom mill in the area. This program consisted of a series of short holes drilled at 50 foot intervals along the eastern extent of the Olive vein for approximately 1,100 feet. This drilling continued to encounter the Olive vein eastward over narrow widths in the order of l foot. Also as a part of this drilling program 18 drill holes tested areas between and in the vicinity of the old mine workings to a depth of 300 feet. As a result of this drilling program and with the aid of old assay plans of the mine a mineral inventory of 23,225 tons grading 0.22 oz. gold/ton was calculated.

Hole #43 of the 1984 drilling program tested a cherty-tuff sulphide zone some 1,500 ft. southwest of the Olive vein zone on claim K 475269. Here 1983 sampling of muck from a small exploration pit returned anomalous gold values. The hole intersected a 12 foot thick sulphide zone in tuff averaging Q.02% Cu, Q.32% Zn, 0.005 oz. Au/ton and 0.23 oz. Ag/ton.
The Olive workings consist of a main 6x8 foot inclined shaft to sunk to 247 feet. A total of 2,344 feet of drifting is reported on three levels at 60 feet, 138 feet and 210 feet. In 1987 Noront Resources Ltd. dewatered the old Olive workings to determine the dimensions and grade of any remaining ore shoots. Underground the Olive vein pinches to 0.5 inches and swells to 5 feet. The average width through out the mine workings is approximately 7.5 inches.
As a result of this program two gold shoots have been identified within the mine workings. The west shoot occurs on all three levels and has partially been mined between the first and second. Sampling results from this shoot returned 130 feet averaging 0.319 oz. gold/ton across 3 feet on the first level, and 46 feet averaging 1.466 oz. gold/ton across 3 feet on the third level. Between the first and second levels there remains approximately 1,100 tons of broken material averaging 0.317 oz. gold/ton. Ludwig (1987) calculates a total of 5,360 tons of material remaining in this shoot grading 0.38 oz. gold/ton. The east shoot located 150 feet east of the shaft extends from surface to midway between the first and second levels. Here Ludwig (1987) calculates a reserve of 4,000 tons grading 0.25 oz. gold/ton. Combined the total reserve within the mine workings is 9,360 tons grading 0.327 oz. gold/ton.

8.0 1987 DIAMOND DRILL PROGRAM
Following the underground evaluation an 11 hole, 6,167 foot diamond drill program commenced in May 1987 to test: a) the down dip extension of the Olive vein at 500 feet below surface, b) stratigraphy north of the Olive vein zone, and c) a quartz-fracture zone located in the northeastern portion of the property.
At the back of this report a location plan of the 1987 drill holes are plotted in reference to the 1984 holes (Map 1). In addition a longitudinal section of the drilling and underground workings is enclosed (Map 2). As Appendix l to this report drill logs of the 1987 program are attached with cross sections.
Seven holes (87-2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8) tested the Olive vein zone over a length 1,500 feet beneath the old workings at approximately 500 feet below surface. Of these holes only 87-3, encountered an enriched gold value of 0.107 oz./ton across 5.0 feet in the Olive vein. The remaining holes returned only anomalous values over narrow widths. In holes 87-4 and 87-5 a quartz-carbonate vein system was encountered 100 and 200 feet respectively north of the Olive vein in the hanging wall intermediate volcanics. Hole 87-4 returned 0.178 oz. gold/ton across 5.5 feet with 1,020 ppm Cu and 55 ppm Zn. Hole 87-5 returned 0.096 oz. gold/ton with 1,230 ppm Cu and 4.55% Zn across 5.5 feet. The relationship between these two intersections is unknown as they occur in different stratigraphic positions away from the Olive vein zone.
Three holes (87-1,9 and 10) tested the stratigraphy north of the Olive vein zone. These holes encountered metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks intercalated with oxide iron formation and grey feldspar porphyry. Hole 87-1 intersected a zone of quartz-carbonate veining with pyrite and chalcopyrite approximately 500 feet north of the Olive vein. This zone returned 0.077 oz. Au/ton across 5.0 feet hosted in a chlorite schist.
Hole 87-11 was drilled in the northeastern portion of the property to test a quartz-carbonate fracture zone identified during mapping in 1983. This hole was drilled on claim K 629006 encountering a 14 foot section of the fracture zone returning anomalous gold values of 306 ppb, with copper values up to 1,900 ppb.

j- 9.0 CONCLUSIONS AMD RECOMMENDATIONS
Diamond drilling of the Olive vein zone below the old workings at P approximately 500 feet below surface encountered poor results. l Although the narrow vein was encountered in each drill hole only one
returned an encouraging intersection. At this time no further r- drilling is warranted below the Olive mine workings.
While drilling the fence of 7 holes below the mine and 3 stratigraphic holes to the north three new parallel vein systems
P were encountered returning economic gold and zinc values. Further exploration is required in this area to delineate the extent and significance of these new zones.
Drill testing of a surface quartz-carbonate fracture zone in the northeastern portion of the property returned anomalous gold values
r over 14 feet. Further work is warranted to define the extent of this! zone.fr -
To define the significance of the parallel vein systems north of theP Olive vein zone a minimum 5 hole, 3,000 foot diamond drill program is
recommended. At the same time consideration should be given to drilltest the eastern extent of the Olive vein system at a minimum of 500
( feet below surface.
To further define the extent and significance of the quartz- ^ carbonate fracture zone in the northeastern portion of the property a
program of stripping and trenching is recommended. If this is successful in identifying a significant structure additional drilling is required.
