PTCL & Huawei Contribution Today:

In February 2004, huawei Technologies Co,Ltd (“Huawei”) solely constructed the CDMA core network for PTCL, which covers most rural areas of Pakistan and solves the problem of universal service. The CDMA network provides high-quality voice and data services, Value-added services such as pre-paid charging telephone, wireless public telephone and short message services , and differentiated services.

Huawei’s anterior outstanding services contributed to the second cooperation between Huawei and PTCL in December 2004. As the only supplier for the CDMA core network of PTCL, huawei provides the mobile soft switchSolution to construction the largest CDMA soft switch network in the world and also supplies the third generation intelligent network services platform. The network capacity approaches 3,000,000 lines after optimization and reconstruction of the conventional CDMA switching network.

With distributed network and centralized management capability, the CDMA mobile soft switch optimizes the existing network of PTCL, and solves the problem of imbalance in distribution of users and traffic, decreasing CAPEX and OPEX while enhancing the network quality.

The Huawei CDMA soft switch supports multiple bearer modes such as IP bearer adopted between soft switches and TDM bearer adopted between soft switches and other traditional devices based on actual networking conditions in construction of the soft switch network of PTCL, Featuring flexible networking capability, The Huawei mobile soft switch can easily meet complex networking requirements, enabling PTCL to reconstruct the network with no impact on existing services and realize ALL-IP networking smoothly.

According to the development situation of Pakistan’s wireless telecommunication, PTCL made huge efforts to develop wireless public telephone services with high ARPU, Based on in-depth researches and analysis of customer demands, Huawei intelligent network for centralized control. The solution provided by huawei features high security and efficiency, real time alert and real-time control, it helps PTCL gain market competitive edges and with fever of high-end customers, which substantially increases and enhances the e operators brand image.

Introduction To NGN :

The next-generation network (NGN) is body of key architectural changes in telecommunication core and access networks. The general idea behind the NGN is that one network transports all information and services (voice, data, and all sorts of media such as video) by encapsulating these into packets, similar to those used on the Internet. NGNs are commonly built around theInternet Protocol, and therefore the term all IP is also sometimes used to describe the transformation toward NGN.

A next-generation network (NGN) is a packet-based network which can provide services including Telecommunication Services and able to make use of multiple broadband, quality of Service-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. It offers unrestricted access by users to different service provid ers. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users.

NGN Definition:The term "Next Generation Networks" is wide-ranging and is interpreted variously by the broad variety of players involved in the communication business.

Benefits Of Next Generation Networks:There are three principal benefits associated with next-generation network:

I. Greater flexibility, in Terms of the technology and services on offerII. Access to a range of new applications specification to next-generation

networks.III. And most importantly, a significant reduction in the cost of running and

maintaining separate voice, data and internet services.

4Key characteristics of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) :

The demands on the telecommunications networks today and in the future are reflected clearly in the societal changes around the world. Customers of all services have historically wanted more for less, more flexibility, and sometimes just “more”! This can certainly be seen in the rapid growth of mobile network usage. The mentality of anytime, anywhere is becoming prevalent around the world – the primary differences between regions being largely a matter of degree. Also, customers are seeing innovation across all areas of consumer goods and services with “just in time” services tailored to their specific needs and timeframes. These too will be key demands placed upon telecom-muni cations networks as they evolve. Key characteristics of NGNs are:

• Geographic transparency: boundaries are disappearing and economic benefits independent of service “density” must be realized

•Transport efficiencies: transport costs (price/bit) are continuously declining, NGN smust share these efficiencies – for both bearer and signaling traffic

•Internet technology economics: leverage services and service delivery through the Internet, as well as the “silicon economics” of Internet hardware (servers, etc.)As memory and processor Price/performance improve •“Old World” to “New World” interoperability: existing PSTN infrastructure and its associated investment must be fully utilized.

Legacy Network:The term Legacy Network is a name of a popular and famous networking company as well that is operating worldwide to provide different solutions to the network problems that arise in the networking world and along with that, the company also produces new devices for the networks, however, this article does not deal with that company, that is, this article deals with this term with reference to the networking world, not with some company or any other perspective. The term legacy is used to define a set of equipment, computer system, technology, method and applications which are obsolete and are no longer being produced by the company, but are still being used by an individual or an organization. From this

5definition you can guess that what the term legacy network means, however, the exact definition of the term is given in the following material.

The term legacy network in the networking world has two meanings attached to it.

Firstly the tem legacy network is used to describe a network that is present in an organization, and is still being used by it, but is based on older and outdated protocols. The best example of such network is a network that is not based on the IP or TCP/IP protocols, like the IPX or the SNA are considered the legacy networks and those companies who still want to use these networks with the IP based networks have to install or make use of certain other new features which enables this old network to work with the newer one, however, even after all this effort they are still called a legacy network.

Secondly the term can be used to describe the wireless networks that are based on the older 802.11x standards, which were made or announced before the 802.11n standard. The example of these legacy standards are 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g.

6Introduction To Soft-Switch: Short for software switch, a soft switch is an API that is used to bridge a traditional PSTN and VoIP by linking PSTN to IP networks and managing traffic that contains a mixture of voice, fax, data and video. Soft switches are able to process the signaling for all types of packet protocols. Soft switch is a software-based switching platform, which is opposed to traditional hardware-based switching center technology. Soft switches also are based on open systems, another difference between them and traditional proprietary hardware switching systems.Soft switch is also called media gateway controller, call agent and gatekeeper.

7Classes Of Soft-Switches:VoIP Soft switches are subdivided into two classes. Class 4 soft switches and Class 5 soft switches.

Soft switches used for transit VoIP traffic between carriers are usually Called class 4 soft switches. Analogous with other Class 4 telephone switches, the main function of the class 4 soft switch is the routing of large volumes of long distance VoIP calls. The most important characteristics of class 4 soft switch are protocol support and conversion, trans coding, calls per second rate, average time of one call routing, number of concurrent calls.

Class 5 soft switches are intended for work with end-users. These soft switches are both for local and long distance telephony services. Class 5 soft switches are characterized by additional services for end-users and corporate clients such as IP PBX features, call center services, calling card platform, types of authorization, and other features similar to other Class 5 telephone switches.
