Active and Reactive power components: Active power: P=VI.cosϕ (KW) Reactive power: Q=VI.sinϕ (KVAR) Apparent power: S=VI (KVA)
Power Factor
۲٥ (TTA) X-Energy and Power Factor Correction
Technical Training
Capacitors are used to provide reactive power to inductive loads. This will improve the P.F. value (make it close to unity).
Power Factor Correction Concept
۲٦ (TTA) X-Energy and Power Factor Correction
Technical Training
PF correction provides many benefits: Primary (Direct) Benefit: • Reduced electric utility bill if there is a penalty (a typical payback period is less than two years) Other (Indirect) Benefits: • Increased system capacity (generators, cables, transformers) • Improved voltage regulation • Reduced losses in transformers and cables • May reduce harmonics on the power system (with harmonic filters)
Why should we improve Power Factor?
۲۷ (TTA) X-Energy and Power Factor Correction
Technical Training
• apparent power demand :
transformer is loaded 105.6% (Over-Load)
• target : cos ϕ 2 = 0.92 reactive power needed : • Q = P (tan ϕ1 - tan ϕ2) = 230 kvar new apparent power demand : Conclusion : transformer is loaded 86% (normal) 87 kVA available for future load electricity bill reduced
