Music Notes Entiat HS was well represented at the Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Competition in Wenatchee last month by Brittony Lamb (Clarinet), Timmi Buyas (Flute) and Yumiko Sanford (Trumpet). All three students performed very well. Brittony Lamb, an Entiat Sophomore, was also selected for the All-State Honor Band which performed at the Washington Music Educators Conference in Yakima on Monday, February 20
th. Over 1,000 High School music students
statewide auditioned for this prestigious honor. Brittony also performed a solo. The MSHS Pep band has had a very busy schedule playing at many exciting basketball games. In addition, several music students participate in the Nashville Country Star Contest at Wenatchee Valley College. A month full of performances begins with the 3
rd and 4
th grade musical, The
Burley Crew. This musical play about the Lewis and Clark expedition is scheduled for Thursday, March 1 at 7:00 pm. The High School Choir will sing at the Choral Festival on Wednesday, March 21 at the Wenatchee Performing Arts Center. The Band will be performing on Tuesday, March 27, at Wenatchee High School. The music department is also in need of instruments. Mrs. Perry-Hardin is planning to teach a keyboard unit in the spring for elementary students. If you have a piano keyboard you would like to donate or lend to the school, please let her know. The band also needs marching percussion instruments. If you would like assist with equipment or donations, please contact Mrs. Perry-Hardin at the school. ♦

Pennies for Patients The Leadership Class is getting
prepared for our annual Penn ies f o r Pa t ien ts fundraiser for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. Students in grades Prek-12
will bring in money to their classrooms, with each class that raises the most money in grades Prek-5 and 6-12 earning a pizza/ice cream party. This program will run from March 12 through March 30.
The Leadership Class has been a partner in this program for the past five years and each year has been more successful than the past.♦

I begin by extending my thanks to voters for approving the district’s recent maintenance and operations levy. By a two to one ratio, citizens approved a property tax to raise local funds to operate the district in 2013 and 2014. We all wish that sufficient state funding was provided so that school districts did not have to raise additional local money to provide basic programs. That is not the reality of education funding in our state, and it may never be. Districts need local levies to operate effectively. There are very few, if any, districts that do not rely on maintenance and operations levy for part of their funding.
You and I have a direct vote on very few of the taxes that we pay. Most of those decisions are made by the representatives we elect. Strong voter approval for a self-imposed tax to support the operation of the district indicates that people recognize the need even if they don’t like the idea of additional taxes. With the likelihood of funding reductions from state and
federal sources, we appreciate knowing that at least one portion of funding for our school is secure for the next two years.
Walk the halls of Entiat Middle and High School and if you look closely at the photos on the walls you get a brief lesson in local history. Some 87 high school graduation pictures dating back to 1920 document all manner of history from the fashions of the day, to the designs of schools, to the changes in family names that have taken place in Entiat over 91 years. There is history in the halls but it is fragile. The photos are one of a kind and aren’t, at present, archived for safe
keeping.
That’s about to change. A project to electronically archive all of the class photos is currently underway. Dennis King, a retired gentleman who lives in Coulee Dam is dismantling and digitally scanning each photo. While he has the photos apart he cleans the glass and frame. Then he reassembles each photo
and frame so that it is ready to be displayed again at school. The class photos will be displayed on a web site where each entire class can be viewed and each individual photo can be enlarged and viewed individually. All of t he ph o tos w i l l be scanned , reassembled and back on the walls in time for the all school reunion on June 16, 2012. To see what the finished digital product will look like go to http://denniskingphoto.com and click on Manson High School Class Photos.
A group of Entiat High School alumni is
organizing a fund raising effort to help
pay the cost of this archiving project.
Contact the school district office if you
are interested in helping with the fund
raising effort. A digital archive of the
district’s graduation photos accessible to
the public will be a useful resource. The
archive will also let us rest a little easier
knowing that if any of the pictures were
ever destroyed, there would still be a
record of the important historical record
of graduations from Entiat High School.♦

This year’s event is expected to be even bigger, with 150 free kites for kids. Organizers plan to have vendors for food and kite-related paraphernalia, as well as a kite-fighting team to be on hand to demonstrate their skills. Prizes for best kites will also be awarded.
The event is sponsored by the Entiat Valley Chamber of Com-merce. For more information, please contact festival chairman Alan Moen at 509-784-5101 or [email protected]♦

Until the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1752, March was the first month of the year. It was named after the Roman god of war, Mars.
Dayl ight Saving Time went into effect in the United States for the first time on
March 31, 1918. This year Daylight Savings time begins on March 11th.

How Heroes Rise and Fall… and Rise Again: The Strange Case of Robert Falcon Scott
AT THE ENTIAT PUBLIC LIBRARY
Author Richard Farr will present “How Heroes Rise and Fall … And Rise Again: The Strange Case of Robert Falcon Scott” at Entiat Public Library on Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 PM. This program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by North Central Regional Library and Humanities Washington.
What makes heroes, what causes them to fall from grace--and what, in relatively rare instances, causes them to rise again? For decades after his death in 1911, "Scott of the Antarctic" was feted worldwide as the ultimate hero for his travels to the South Pole. By the mid-1980s, however, the tide had turned and Scott was routinely dismissed as an amateurish fool whose bad decisions had led to the deaths of his men. (Meanwhile his colleague and rival, Ernest Shackleton, had become the hero du jour.) Now, once again, the tables are turning: several writers have argued that the criticism of Scott is misplaced. New considerations cast his expedition, his whole era, and indeed our own way of thinking
about the past in a new light, begging a much larger question: how should we form judgments when we don't have all the facts?
Richard Farr has a Ph.D. in ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of science from Cornell University; taught philosophy at several universities; ran a corporate communications business; and is working on a book about what makes great speeches great. His book about Scott's last expedition, Emperors of the Ice, won a 2009 Washington State Book Award, among other honors. His first children's novel will be published by Penguin in 2012.
Emperors of the Ice will be available for checkout in both book and audio format at the Entiat Public Library. Teens and adults are encouraged to read this exciting adventure novel based on true events.
This presentation is sponsored by Humanities Washington through their state-wide Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau brings Washington’s finest scholars, historians, musicians, and storytellers to local communities to give dynamic presentations at libraries, schools, museums, and other community organizations.
Humanities Washington honors and shares stories, ideas, and perspectives from across our state that connect Washingtonians from all backgrounds and communities, allowing us to understand our past and present as we work to shape our future. For information visit www.humanities.org. or contact Esther Dalgas at the Entiat Public Library: 784-1517 or by email - [email protected].♦

A copy of information that will be provided to the students during the course of this instruction is available in the school office for parents to preview. Parents always have the option of having their child opt out of this instruction. Should this be the case, please contact Paula Grieb, the school nurse, at 784-1314.♦
