Explore these structures that have stood tall for4,500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. Afterwards, make your way to the EgyptianMuseum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum,and make sure to check out the Mummies Hall (optional) for a close encounter with some of the country’s mostimportant queens and pharaohs. The masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun are animpressive sight to behold.

Today you will drive to the port city of Alexandria along what is known as the ‘desert road’. Enroute, will visit theCommonwealth War Graves of El Alamein. It is here where two extended battles were fought during World War II. Thefirst began on the 1st July 1942 and lasted for 27 days, ending as a stalemate. After 3 months of holding back the enemy,the allies launched a second attack which lasted for 13 days. The importance of El Alamein was highlighted by WinstonChurchill, who said “Before Alamein we never had a victory.” After, continue on to Alexandria to check in to your hoteland enjoy some free time.

Today your guide will take you on a tour of the city known for its broad beaches and seafront corniche dotted with sunloungers and cafes. Afterwards, prepare to delve into the Catacombs. Heading underground, you will get to view thelargest known Roman burial site in Egypt, complete with burial chambers, labyrinth alleyways and entertaining roomsfor families coming to visit the dead. The crypts are 20 metres below street level, and what probably began as a smallfamily tomb grew into a coil of rooms that could accommodate more than 300 bodies.We then drive back to Cairo. Onarrival back in Cairo, take some time to relax or get some supplies before boarding your overnight sleeper train toAswan.

Today we set out to explore some of Aswan’s other landmarks. We begin with the unfinished obelisk. It is the largestknown Egyptian obelisk, however it was left incomplete. It now provides a fascinating look at how these greatmonuments were constructed. We then continue to the nubian museum. The museum is considered to be a gatewayto the history of Nubia that enables visitors to understand the complex history of this unique area. After, we visit theHigh Dam which behind sits the mighty lake Nasser. At the time, it was the largest dam project in the world. Thecreation of the reservoir necessitated the costly relocation of the ancient Egyptian temple complex of Abu Simbel, whichwould otherwise have been submerged. After, enjoy free time at your resort.

Today we drive to Abu Simbel near the southern Egyptian border. Often referred to as the Temples of Ramses II, the twoenormous sandstone structures at Abu Simbel were built in 1255 BC by Ramses II to commemorate himself and hisfavorite wife Nefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues ofRamses II on its facade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the love goddess Hathor, with statues designed toembody Nefertari. Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being floodedwith the construction of the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into piecesand move them to higher ground, where they are seen today. On the return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for youto make your own discoveries. On our return, we check in to our Nile cruise, which is home for the next 3 nights.

DAY 8Destination Kom Ombo Temple Edfu

Today your journey ashore is to visit the Kom Ombo Temple. Set dramatically on the bank of the Nile, 47 kilometresnorth of Aswan and 168 kilometres south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the Great Temple of Kom Ombo are amagnificent sight as you arrive from the river. Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, the temple's finely carvedreliefs give a sense of this area's prominence as capital over the surrounding region during the Ptolemaic era. Today,Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agricultural backwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along theNile once made it one of Upper Egypt's most important centres. Wander through the temple's colonnades, gazing up atscenes of kingly propaganda, and you'll capture a feel of this glorious history for yourself. Return to the cruise boatwhere you’ll continue travelling upriver, with free time relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights –desert hills forming a backdrop to lush riverbanks, fishermen casting their nets and farmers working their land.

Today finds you moored near Edfu, a beautifully preserved temple also dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. Youcan disembark and discover the lively streets of Edfu town – get acquainted with the bustling town centre and purchasesome souvenirs at the bazaars.

Optional TourOptional Tour - Edfu Temple - continue to the temple, perhaps the best preserved in the whole country. The scale isincredibly impressive, with soaring sandstone walls covered in reliefs and hieroglyphics. You’ll pass through the GrandTemple entranceway into a colossal courtyard ringed with 32 towering columns, each richly decorated with patterns,and once the site of a great altar. The sense of awe that comes from touring this temple is incredible.

Please note: The only mode of transport available to visit the Edfu temple is by locally managed horse and carriages. As aresponsible travel focused business, animal welfare is extremely important to us and unfortunately, some operators ofthe horse and carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. It is for this reason we do notinclude the visit the Edfu Temple. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple,the decision is ultimately up to you and your guide can help arrange transport and ensure the best horses are used.

Your Nile cruise comes to an end in the open air museum of Luxor – from the spectacular temple complex of Karnak tothe “Valley of the Kings”, Luxor is full of wonderfully preserved reminders of the Pharaohs. Today you will explore themagnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient Pharaoh’s' monumental works. Oneof the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak is a house of the gods built over a period of some 200 years.Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as theAvenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun The rest of the day is free for you to relax, shop in the excellentbazaar or perhaps experience the atmosphere of a local teahouse.

Today you will discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon, two 17metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III andwere once part of an impressive colonnade. Continue on to the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings.Buried under the arid hills here are over 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Withyour leader, explore this sprawling and spectacular place, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th centuryBC) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the historyand legends of these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings andhieroglyphics, still well preserved in the deepest tombs. You will visit three of the most interesting royal tombs and thencontinue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building set against high cliffs that create aspectacular natural amphitheatre. Today you will farewell the magic of the Nile and drive east to the beachside town of Hurghada. The green Nile valley issoon left behind as you head out into the barren Eastern Desert. Passing through rocky hills, the glittering waters of theRed Sea soon come into view and the rugged bulk of the Sinai Peninsula looms through the haze on the opposite shore.A vibrant beach resort, Hurghada is by no means a typical ‘adventure destination’. After checking in to your hotel, take awalking tour with your guide to get your bearings, and check out some of the local restaurants and sights.

via the Souq, where you get an idea of everyday life, to the Roman Theater from the 2nd century with 6000 seats.Afterwards you will have a short drive north (approximately 1 hour) to Jerash, once one of the grandest ancient Romancities in the world. These are some of the best ruins Greco-Roman ruins around. Reaching its zenith as a favourite of theemperor Hadrian, it has a striking collection of archways and theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets,and is a beautiful place to spend a morning exploring. Grand ionic columns encircle the city's centrepiece, the OvalPlaza, a wonderfully atmospheric place to linger after exploring Jerash's riches.

DAY 17Destination Amman Petra

Today, you will head to the red rose city of Petra. Enroute we drive to Madaba, home to a number of fine Byzantinemosaics. Visit the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George and see an impressive mosaic map of the Holy Land that clearlydepicts Palestine and Lower Egypt around 550 AD. Continue to the ancient village at Dana, on the edge of the DanaBiosphere Reserve, where local artisans sell attractive silver jewellery and charms.

Later, the ancient Crusader castle at Shobak makes as imposing sight as you make the short drive up to it. It wasoriginally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Saladin in1189. Stroll the site and discover a small chapel, original gatehouse, and find out where a long, dark secret passage leads.

DAY 18Destination Petra

Great ready today for Petra! Petra is justifiably on most people’s list of ‘must-visit’ places. It is the jewel of Jordan, the lostcity of the biblical Nabateans, an impressive series of tombs and dwellings hidden behind ornate façades carved directlyinto the rock. Dating back to the 6th century BC, the site was lost to Western minds until it was rediscovered in 1812 by aSwiss explorer. The iconic Petra view – the Treasury's glorious façade, glimpsed from the narrow cleft known as the Siq –is arguably the single most striking sight of the entire region. The first taste of this exquisite craftsmanship among suchstark scenery is a moment that manages to be both eagerly anticipated and also an almost surreal surprise. The Siqleads through the rock and is sometimes only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side, andit is impossible not to imagine the armies and traders who made their way down here in the ancient times. This morning is free at leisure. After lunch (not included) we continue to the village of Rum and a browse around theexcellent and informative visitor's centre, you will visit several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and soak in thevast silence and spectacular desert landscapes. Wadi Rum is a truly beautiful place with towering sandstone mountains.It is very deserving of the time you will be spending here, with the wind-sculpted rock formations changing huethroughout the day from sunrise to sunset. You will also meet your Bedouin friends and ride camels to your traditionalBedouin tent situated deep within Wadi Rum. The Bedouins live in scattered camps throughout the area. You will enjoyan evening with them at one of their camps, which is set in an amazing location. Wadi Rum is probably best known forits connection with the enigmatic British officer T.E. Lawrence, who was based here during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18. Much of David Lean's movie on his exploits, 'Lawrence of Arabia', was actually filmed in Wadi Rum.

After waking up in the unique surrounds of the luxury camp this morning, you will enjoy a walk around the area (thelength of the walk will depend on how energetic you are feeling) before scaling one of the large dunes to enjoysensational views of the surrounding area. Keen photographers will be delighted. You will also meet your Bedouinfriends and ride camels across the Wadi Rum desert. Make sure you pack your swim wear today, because in theafternoon you can wash off the dust from exploring ruins with a dip like no other. Drive approximately 1.5 hours to spendthe afternoon on the shores of the Dead Sea. Named for the dearth of life in its waters, this lake is so intensely salty thatthe density of the water makes swimming and getting underneath the surface very difficult. Floating on the surfacewithout any sort of lilo makes for a unique pleasure though. Afterwards you will return to Amman for the evening.
