1. GraduationfromWestMichiganAviationAcademyimpliesthatstudentshavesatisfactorilycompletedanapprovedcourseofstudyandthattheyhaveacceptablypassedanyexaminationsand/orotherrequirementsestablishedbytheschool.
2. ItshallbetheresponsibilityoftheCEOand/orhisorherdesigneetomaintainarecordsystemthatwillprovidetheinformationnecessarytoassurethattheabovepolicyisenforced.
3. Onlyapprovedcourseswillbeacceptedforgraduation.CourseworktakenanywherebutatWestMichiganAviationAcademymustbeapprovedinadvancetopreventlossofcreditthroughmisunderstanding.
4. Priorhighschoolcreditearnedfromaccreditedschoolsistransferable,withtheseexceptions:doctrinalreligioncourses;driver'seducation;serviceactivitiessuchasteacher,office,orlibraryassistant.
5. Studentsenrollinginsummerschoolforcreditmusthaveschoolcounselorapproval.6. Astudentmayrepeatacoursethats/hehastakenandpassed,butitwillnotbeforcredit.Both

10. Twenty-sixcreditsareneededtoreceiveadiplomafromWestMichiganAviationAcademy.Studentslackingnotmorethanonecreditatgraduationtimewillbepermittedtoparticipateincommencement,providedtheyareenrolledinandhavepaidforsummerschool.Thediplomawillbewithhelduntilallgraduationrequirementshavebeenfulfilled.
11. RecognizingthatasmallpercentageofstudentsmaybeunabletomeetcertainMichiganMeritCurriculumrequirements,aPersonalCurriculumcanbedeveloped.Pleaseseeaschoolcounselorregardingthispossibility.
12. TheAcademy’sdeansandcounselorswillprovideinformationandassistancetoallstudentstoenablethemtodevelopascheduleofcoursesthatwillmeetrequirementsforcolleges,vocationalschools,oranypost-highschoolprogramselectedbythestudentandher/hisparents.

B. AnystudentwhoattendsWestMichiganAviationAcademyforonlythelastsemesterofthesenioryearwillbeallowedtograduatefromWestMichiganAviationAcademyifs/hefulfillsthegraduationrequirementsofthisschool,andtheschools/hehastransferredfromrefusestograntadiploma.
C. AnystudentwhohasattendedWestMichiganAviationAcademythroughthefirstsemesterofthesenioryearandthentransferstoanotherschoolwillbeallowedtoreceiveadiplomafromWestMichiganAviationAcademyandparticipateinthegraduationexercises,ifs/he

SELECTINGCLASSESTheWestMichiganAviationAcademyBoardofDirectorshasestablishedthefollowingguidelinesregardingastudent’scourseload:1. Allstudents,inallgrades,aretobescheduledinsevenclassespersemester.
2. AcollegepreparatorycurriculumconsistsofaMINIMUMOFFOURACADEMICcourses(English,
mathematics,socialstudies,science,worldlanguage)eachofthefourhighschoolyears.Themoreselectivethecollege,themorerigoroustheacademicloadshouldbeinbothcoursedifficultyandinnumberofclassestaken.
3. HonorsandAPSelection:EachdepartmenthasdevelopedcriteriatohelpidentifywhowilllikelybesuccessfulinbothhonorsandAPcourses.Usingdatafromeachdepartment,studentswillbeplacedinand/orencouragedtoselecttheappropriatecourseduringthecourseregistrationandschedulingperiods.
4. Afterfirstsemester,teachersandthedepartmentchairwillidentifystudentswhoarenotmeetingand/orexceedingcourseexpectations.Usingteacherinputandcourseperformancedata,studentsmaybemovedtoadifferentlevelcoursewithequivalentcontent.Forcourse-specificpoliciesregardingmidyearmoves,pleasereviewindividualcoursesyllabi.
STEMENDORSEMENTTheSTEMendorsementexiststoinspireandrecognizestudentswhohavestronginterestandperformanceinScience,Technology,Engineering,andMathematics.Theendorsementwillservetosetstudentsapartoncollegeandcareerapplicationsaswellasduringinterviewsandscholarshipcompetitions.StudentswillberecognizedforsuccessfulcompletionoftheSTEMcurriculumattheseniorhonorsprogramaswellasontheirdiploma.Studentsmustearn…

STATEMANDATEDDUALENROLLMENTPROGRAMThePostsecondaryEnrollmentOptionsAct,commonlyreferredtoasdualenrollment,provideseligibilityguidelinesandstandards,including:
1. Studentsingrades9through12maytakeuptotenpostsecondarycoursesduringtheirhighschoolcareer.Forastudentthatfirstdualenrollsin:
a. 9thgrade:notmorethantwocoursesperyearin9th,10th,and11thgrade,andnotmorethanfourcoursesingrade12
b. 10thgrade:notmorethantwocoursesin10thgrade,andnotmorethanfourcoursesin11thand12thgrade
c. 11thor12thgrade:notmorethansixcoursesperyear
2. PublicAct594of2004,oneofthepiecesoflegislationthatcreatedtheMME,requirestheMichiganDepartmentofEducationtosetthepassingscoresonthereadinessexamsthatareusedtodetermineeligibilityfordualenrollment.ThesereadinessexamsaretheMME,thePSAT,theSATandtheACT.UpdatedscorerequirementscanbeprovidedbytheschoolcounselorortheMichiganDepartmentofEducationwebsite.
3. Studentsmustbeenrolledinboththeeligibleschool(publicorprivate)andeligible
postsecondaryinstitutionduringthelocalschool’sregularacademicyearandmustbeenrolledinatleastonehighschoolclass.
4. Thecollegecoursescannotbeahobby,craft,orrecreationcourse,orinthesubjectareasof
physicaleducation,theology,divinity,orreligiouseducation.
5. Schooldistrictsarerequiredtopayanamountequaltotheproratedpercentageofthestatewidepupil-weightedaveragefoundationallowance,basedontheproportionoftheschoolyeartheeligiblestudentattendstheeligiblepostsecondaryinstitution.
WestMichiganAviationAcademyencouragesandsupportsdualenrollmentforstudentswhoshowreadinessforcollegelevelcoursework.Studentsandparentsinterestedinpursuingdualenrollmentshouldbeawarethat:
1. AsignedDualEnrollmentAgreementmustbeonfileforeachsemesterofdualenrollment2. Studentsshouldmeetwiththeircounselortostartthedualenrollmentapplicationprocess.

TESTINGOUTPOLICYWestMichiganAviationAcademy,incompliancewiththeSchoolCodeofMichigan,willallowstudentsto“testout”ofanycourseorcreditarea.Thesetestswillbeasounddemonstrationthatastudentmeetsorexceedsthecontentexpectationsassociatedwiththecreditarea.Becausesomeend-of-yeartestsdonotserveascomprehensivemeasuresofcontentandskill“mastery”asexpressedintheMichiganSchoolCode,studentsmayberequiredtodemonstrateareasonabledegreeofmasteryeitherthroughawrittenexamination,writtenpapers,projects,portfolios,orothercomparableforms.Thefollowingstatementswillapplytothetestingoutprovision:
1. Courseadvancement,creditand/orwaiverwillonlybegrantedforaC+(77%)orbetter.Ifthereisnofinalexam,creditwillbeearnedbyexhibitingmasterythroughthebasicassessmentusedinthecourseandmayconsistofaportfolio,performancepaper,project,and/orpresentation.
2. Whentestingoutofhighschoolcourses,thistestingoutprovisionwillcounttowardgraduationrequirementcredit.
3. Successfulcompletionofthetestingoutprovisionwillalsocounttowardfulfillmentofarequirementforasubjectareaoracoursesequence.
4. Creditsearnedthroughtestingoutwillnotbeincludedinacomputationofgradepointaverage.
5. Studentswhopassahigherclassthatisverticallyalignedinitsprogressionofstandards,thestudentiseligibletoreceivecreditinthelowerlevelcourse.

ONLINECOURSESWestMichiganAviationAcademystronglybelievesthatface-to-faceclassroominstructionatthehighschoolisthebestlearningenvironmentforstudents.Enrollmentinaface-to-facecourseofferedatthehighschoolwillbethepriorityoptionforallstudents.However,werecognizethattherearesituationswhenastudent’sbestlearningoptionistoenrollinanonline/virtualcourse.Tobesuccessfulinanonlineclass,thestudentmust:
• beaself-starterwithastrongsenseofdirectionandtheabilitytosetgoals.• workindependently,stayontask,andmaintainadailyscheduleofloggingonandkeepingup
withreadings,courseassignments,homeworkandotherexpectations.• possessproblem-solvingskills,organization,andself-advocacyskills
Studentsandparentsmustalsobeawarethat:• Studentswishingtoenrollinavirtualcoursemustrequestvirtuallearningduringthewinter

ThisclassisuniquetothecultureandcurriculumattheWestMichiganAviationAcademyandisrequiredforallincomingfreshmen.Thisclassisdesignedtoexposestudentstotherichhistoryofaviationandtheliteratureandartthathasbeeninspiredbyhumanflight.Whileweexplorethisfascinatingfieldacrossmultipleeras,wewillworkonbuildingthenecessaryreading,writing,andpresentationskillsneededtosucceedinthefieldofaviation.Thiscoursewillexaminetheearlydiscoveryandinventionofflyingmachines,significantaviation-relatedmilestones,theimpactofaviationinwarfare,andaviation-relatedcrises.Studentswillbeexpectedtodescribethevariouspeopleandeventskeytodevelopmentsinthefieldofaviation.AHLstudentswillreadseveralnon-fictionandfictionaviation-relatedselectionstoexperienceadiversedisplayoftheinterestandingenuitysurroundingthefieldofaviation.Attheendofthecourse,studentswillbeaskedtocompleteaCreativeResponseProjecttodemonstratenewlearninginspiredbythecontentofthecourse.

TheAviationPhysiologycourseisanaviation-themedphysicaleducationcourseinwhichstudentswillbeintroducedtoaviationphysiologyconceptsandoverallaviation-relatedfitness.Aspectsofaviationphysiologywillincludevisionforflight,vestibulardisorientation,hypoxiaandhyperventilation,effectsofpressureonearandsinusblockage,motionsickness,stress,fatigue,aswellastheimpactofalcoholandotherdruguse.Additionally,aviationmedicalcertificaterequirementswillbeoutlinedtoensurestudentsareawareofindustrystandards.Pilotpersonalfitnessactivitieswillincludebodycomposition,muscularstrengthandendurance,aswellascardiovascularendurance.AviationPhysiologystudentswillbecontinuouslyeducatedonproperstretching,nutrition,andliftingtechniquestodevelopanoverallhealthylifestyle.AV20X:INTRODUCTIONTOAVIATIONWEATHER

ThisclassisdesignedtogivestudentsanoverviewofthecompositionoftheatmosphereandhowitrelatestotheweatherfoundonEarth.Thefollowingtopicswillbeanalyzed:theheatingoftheEarth’ssurfaceandatmosphere,moistureandatmosphericstability,formsofcondensationandprecipitation,airpressureandwinds,circulationoftheatmosphere,airmasses,weatherpatterns,thunderstormsandtornadoes,hurricanes,andanintroductiontoweatherforecastingandanalysis.Formanyofthesetopics,astudyofhowthefieldofaviationisaffectedbydifferentaspectsofweatherwillbeapplied.

ThisIntroductiontoAviationFlightPlanningcourseisdesignedtoexposestudentstothenecessarymath-relatedskillsrequiredforaviationflightscience.Theclasswillmakefulluseofaviationmaps,charts,graphs,andflightplanningtools.Basicalgebraconceptswillbeutilizedtocompleteflight-planningrequirementsassociatedwithtime,distance,speed,andfuelcalculations.Additionally,thecomponentofwindwillbeintroducedasitrelatestowindtrianglecalculationsforflightplanningandflightexecutionforcalculatingcrosswind-landingrequirements.Studentswillalsoberequiredtoutilizetheappropriateaviation-relatedchartsandgraphstocompletealtitudeconversions,aircraftweightandbalancecalculations,aswellastakeoffandlandingcalculations.Finally,simpleaviationmapinterpretationandairspacestructureshouldbeexpected.AV21X:INTRODUCTIONTOAVIATIONMAINTENANCE

TheEnglishLanguageDevelopment2courseisdesignedtohelpstudentsworktowardsachievingproficiencyinreading,writing,speaking,andlisteningintheEnglishlanguage.StudentswillreceiveauthenticpracticeandinstructioninthesociallanguageofEnglishwithafocusondevelopingfluencyformultiplepurposesthroughtheuseoftheme-basedunitsandinformationaltext,studentswillbeexposedtoavarietyoftextstobuildbackgroundandstudentswillproducewritingforacademicpurposes.Studentswillworktoincreasetheirvocabularyinacademiccontexts,continuetodeveloptheirlisteningcomprehensionandincreasetheirfluencybyrepeatedpracticeoftextdesignedtoexposestudentstocontentspecifictopics.Astudentwouldqualifyif:

EvidenceBasedLiteracyInstruction(EBLI)isaresearch-basedprogramdesignedtoteachstudentshowtoreadfluently,becomeabetterwriter,andspellcorrectly.Spellingpatternsaretaughtinthecontextofwritingandmisspelledwordsarecorrectedimmediately.Correctwritingconventionsaremodeledandpracticed.Studentswillbeexposedtoavarietyofengagingtextsandwillworktowardsidentifyingthemainidea,writingconcisesummaries,andparticipatinginliteraturecircles.Thiscourseisdividedinto2parts.Thefirsthalfismadeupof30intensiveunitstotrainstudentsinEBLI,andthesecondhalfconsistsofstudentsimplementingwhatthey’velearned.Studentswilltracktheirweeklyprogress,participateinindependentandgroupcenterreadingsandactivities,andwillmonitortheirreadingfluency,comprehension,andgrowth.Astudentwouldqualifyif:

TheSkillsforSuccessCourseisofferedtoastudentwithanIndividualEducationPlan(IEP)requiringaresourceprogram.Thecourseisdesignedtoberesults-oriented,focusedonimprovingbothfunctionalandacademicskillsofthestudent.Alignmentofthespeciallydesignedinstruction(SDI),relatedservices,and/oraccommodationssupportthestudent'suniqueareasofaroundtheindividual'sIEPandpost-secondaryvision/courseofstudy.
