Editorial Back in late September I took part in the HRCC Race GroupLeaders conference in Brisbane where it was a forum for the active racingmembers of HRCC to have a voice through their various group leaders.Great gathering. There is an article here on the topics raised however acouple of things stood out to me. One was the commitment and energyshown by group leaders in trying to improve the race meeting experiencefor their fellow competitors. The other was the low level of feedback fromcompetitors that the group leaders represent, following emails requestinginput for presentation at the conference. The takeaway being that mostcompetitors are happy with HRCC race meetings. The HRCC committee also has been active in exploring the options forHRCC clubrooms. Several properties have been inspected now. Trying totick the boxes on the wish list is not easy but it is also proving to be agood way of distilling the must haves from the nice to haves. Finding apermanent home for HRCC is moving forward. Ian Welsh

Group Leader ConferenceGroup leaders and HRCC committee members gottogether on Saturday 21st September for an evening ofdiscussion on the race meetings promoted by HRCCin 2019 and what improvements might be available forimplementation in 2020. There were 10 race groupleaders taking part and they had surveyed competitorsfor input by email prior to the conference. It was generally considered that the race meetingswere well organised and ran well on the days. However, lots of positive ideas came out of thediscussions for the race committee team to take onboard for the new year. Some of the main discussionpoints to come out of the meeting –Driving StandardsGenerally considered there has been an improvementin 2019. The utilisation of a Driving Standards Advisorhas been positive for racing. However, it was pointedout that the DSA is an advisor only and if further actionis needed regarding penalties/disqualification then thisis the responsibility of CAMS officials. Use of in-caraction cameras for evidence is an important factor.Morgan Park Raceway

    ▪ Carports. Not enough for all competitors. Methods of allocation requirements discussed.

    ▪ Tender vehicle parking. Safety issue. Lessspace in paddock available now so

unnecessary tender vehicles will be notpermitted entry. A CAMS official paddockmarshall will be utilised in 2020. Sup Regs toadvise of restrictions. Investigate penalties fornon compliance.

    ▪ Power for battery charging. Not enough powerpoints available. Need to discuss with MPRmanagement.

Race formats.Three or four races per meeting? Survey ofcompetitors did not give a conclusive answer howeverthere was thoughts that shorter races better becauseof tyre degradation and also after 5 /6 laps the racingcan become a procession.Rolling starts.Formula Ford competitors not in favour of rolling starts. Also not in favour of the agreement of no passingbefore Turn 3, saying maybe just for turn 1 when on arolling startDrivers BriefingRegularity competitors requested an earlier andseparate briefing as on past race schedules they arealways the first event. Also claimed that they can haveinexperienced competitors who need more clarificationon procedures and actions.

Conference minutes are available from group leaderswhich detail all topics raised.

The Bend ClassicAn additional historic theme racemeeting has been added to the 2019race calendar. The Bend MotorsportPark at Tailem Bend out of Adelaide haspicked up the void left by thecancellation of what was the AdelaideMotorsport Festival.• Classic and Unique Race Cars• 8 Motorsport Categories• 4 Circuit Configurations• Free Spectator EntryEntry cost is $899 and includes agarage/carport/marquee.

It will cater for modern and classicsports cars, classic & historic openwheeled cars, 1972 - 1995 Touring Cars& Sports Sedans and otherunique/historically significant cars.

    CAMS Media Release - 12th Oct 2019

A letter to our members from CAMS PresidentAndrew Papadopoulos

On the eve of one of the biggest motor sport events on our calendar, the Bathurst 1000, I write to you toshare some significant news of our own.

As of 1 January 2020, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) will change its trading name toMotorsport Australia.

This is a significant change and one thathas been in planning for some time. Youwill see it officially announced on theVirgin Australia Supercars ChampionshipBathurst 1000 broadcast this weekendand also find out more on our websiteand social media channels.

We know CAMS has a long history withinmotorsport in Australia and that won’tchange – we are not planning on pushingthat history to one side, in fact we willembrace it as we embark upon our nextchapter. It is also worth noting our structure remains the same, meaning clubs still have a voice throughtheir State Councils and Panels.

Our new logo, which you can see in the branding on the top of this letter, pays tribute to CAMS with afamiliar look for our new Motorsport Australia brand.

The CAMS brand is well known inside the sport, however we have a responsibility to grow and encouragemore people to enjoy motor sport more often in a changing sporting landscape.

Motorsport in Australia is at record levels – we have more than 27,000 active licence holders, almost11,000 licenced officials and close to 600 affiliated car clubs. This highlights that the sport is in goodshape – but we know there is still plenty of room for more growth.

Our new name,Motorsport Australia, clearly and accurately projects our role as the peak body of four-wheeled motorsport, as well as highlighting that we are a modern, progressive organisation.

As many of you would know, we don’t just issue licences and organise officials – like all governing bodiesin 2019, we have many varied roles across all disciplines and are responsible for running a number ofevents and Championships, like the Shannons Nationals, the Australian Rally Championship and theAustralian Off Road Championship to name just three.

Below are a few of the key questions we anticipate you will have about this change:

What does this mean for me?Your existing CAMS licence will remain current and when it is due for renewal, you will receive a new-lookMotorsport Australia licence with all the existing benefits and entitlements.

Your logbook also remains current and does not need to be replaced. We have made a number of stickersavailable which you can utilise on your existing log book with our new branding.

Affiliated clubs have already been sent renewal information, there is nothing you need to do at this point. Wewill contact you with any changes required – such as new forms for your members and so on.

Any insurance cover you have in place through your work with CAMS remains current and you do not need todo anything when we officially become Motorsport Australia next year.

Will this change be costly? The cost of the change of name has been kept to a minimum and our modelling suggests that the financialbenefit of the change through advantages such as greater public support and sponsorship will more thanexceed the cost in the short term.

We are also aware that there is a transition period for this change which was part of our planning to reduceany changeover costs – so, for example there will be no extra new licences issued, you will simply get yourMotorsport Australia licence when you renew your licence.

Our name change has been a long time in the planning. We have been reducing inventories of old stock ofmerchandise. This phased approach to introducing our new name will minimise, if not eliminate any wastage.

Is the website address changing?Yes, from 1 January 2020, www.motorsport.org.au will be our new home page – the existing www.cams.com.auaddress will automatically redirect to our new address.

We are also delighted to confirm that a new member portal will be available in early 2020 which will make lifeeasier when dealing with Motorsport Australia and give you more options to complete tasks online.

If you have any further queries, please don’t hesitate to contact our membership hotline on 1300 883 959. Ourpassionate staff are happy to assist you with any motorsport query you may have.

We thank you for your ongoing support of motorsport in Australia and look forward to working with you asMotorsport Australia.

    Regards,

    Andrew PapadopoulosCAMS President
