Dear Wenona community,
It is my great pleasure to congratulate the students of the Class of 2019, their families and the teaching staff on this year’s excellent Higher School Certificate (HSC) results. This has been a wonderful collective effort.
Wenona was ranked 25 in the 2019 HSC Schools Ranking*, with a median ATAR of 92.3. The School is proudly non-selective so to have more than 26% of students attain an ATAR greater than 95, and 62% attain an ATAR greater than 90, reflects the quality of our teaching and the diligence of our students.
We’ve also had a record-breaking 23 students nominated for HSC Showcases and Certificates of Excellence across a wide range of subject areas. This is the largest number we’ve had since records of this nature were first started in 2008, surpassing last year’s record of 17. We’re already so proud of our students, so it is a further delight to acknowledge these outstanding achievements.
Whilst celebrating these achievements, it is important to acknowledge that the Class of 2019 was the first cohort to face the new HSC content and assessment criteria for English, Maths, Science and History. These syllabuses had not been updated since the current HSC was launched nearly 20 years ago, and as a result, this year group – and their teachers – have had to engage with content in much greater depth in order to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to succeed at this level. They have more than risen to the challenge and have done so while honouring their many extra and co-curricular commitments, upholding Wenona’s ethos of service, and contributing to the rich fabric of our School community. I will remember this year group not only for their academic effort, but for the calm, purposeful way they went about achieving their goals.
It is also important to acknowledge that many of our students achieved results at a level equal to, or above, their anticipated level. Furthermore, they displayed a high level of student agency by taking purposeful initiative in, and responsibility for, their own learning. As educators, we cannot ask for more, and we are immensely proud of all this cohort has achieved.
Of course, these wonderful results do not happen in isolation. They are a testament to our team of committed teachers, and the ongoing care and support of our parents and families. Together they have helped to provide a network of encouragement to our students at what can be a stressful and challenging time.
As a year group, the Class of 2019 have led the way in many aspects of School life, fostering an inclusive approach, both inside and outside the classroom. These remarkable young women are now ready to pursue their ambitions across a bold and imaginative range of courses and pathways, both here in Australia and around the world. On behalf of the Wenona community, I wish the Class of 2019 every success in their future endeavours, and I look forward to seeing them make a difference in the world.
