MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

To be a member of the Razorback Marching Band, members must meet the following requirements:

1. Must be registered for MUEN 1441, 2441, 3441, 4441, or 4941 2. Must be in good financial standing with the University Bands and the University of

Arkansas 3. Must be selected for membership by audition 4. Must complete and return all registration forms to the Band Office

ATTENDANCE Faithful attendance is vital to the success of the Razorback Marching Band. All members are required to attend all rehearsals and performances during the fall semester, including the SEC Championship Game and bowl game in December or January as well as the Spring Red-White game for all returning members. Drum Majors will manage all attendance records and the directors will make all final decisions on excuse requests. Attendance Procedures

1. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each rehearsal. 2. If a member is not in their assigned spot in the attendance block when rehearsal

begins, they will be marked absent. 3. If a member arrives late, they must sign in at the drum major cart. At which point

they are counted as tardy. 4. 30 minutes late without notice results in being marked absent for the rehearsal.

To be considered “in attendance,” a student must also have the necessary rehearsal equipment (a working instrument, tennis shoes, drill cards, flip folder, water jug, and/or auxiliary equipment necessary for participation in majorettes and color guard). A student lacking any of these items is not able to participate fully and may be counted absent at the discretion of the directors.

If a member knows they are going to be absent/tardy, they should fill out a Tardy/Absence Form (available in the band office) as far in advance as possible. Likewise, if a member has an unexpected tardy or absent, they must submit the Tardy/Absence Form detailing the reason for their absence to the office within one week of the absence/tardy. Please note: submitting the form does not necessarily mean the absence/tardy will be excused. The directors will make the final decision after reviewing the Tardy/Absence Form. Acceptable Excuses for Tardiness or Absences

1. Illness (doctors note or a written statement from the UA Pat Walker Health Center is required)

2. A death in the family

Page 4: 2016-2017 Razorback Marching Band Handbook

4

3. An extraordinary circumstance approved by the directors Unexcused absences are handled on a case-by-case basis. Below are a few examples of things that are unexcused:

• Dress rehearsal call time for another ensemble (unless approved by director) • Intramural sports events • Social/Fraternity/Sorority events • Birthdays/Anniversaries/Reunions, etc. • Make up tests/meetings • Non-emergency dental or doctor’s appointments • Work (full-time or part-time jobs)

TRAVEL AND BOWL/ CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PARTICIPATION The band will pay to travel for all trips. All members are required to attend the SEC Championship Game and bowl game in December or January. Please plan ahead, as regular the attendance policy will apply to postseason games. For bowl travel that happens after the semester officially ends, you are responsible to get yourself back to Fayetteville at your own expense. The band will pay for your travel from Fayetteville to the bowl game site and back to Fayetteville. Students who do not live in surrounding states and a radius of 750 miles and are returning home for the holiday break need to consult with Directors to arrive at an acceptable solution regarding bowl game participation. Consequences of Not Meeting Attendance Expectations

1. Three unexcused tardies will be considered equal to one unexcused absence. 2. One unexcused absence will lower the grade by one letter. 3. Two unexcused absences will lower the grade by two letters. 4. Three unexcused absences will result in the termination of membership and loss of

scholarship. 5. Excessive absences due to an illness or injury may result in alternate status, as

deemed appropriate by the directors. An unexcused tardy to a game day rehearsal will result in alternate status for the next show. An unexcused absence from a performance (home or away game) will result in termination of membership, loss of scholarship, and a failing grade for the course. This includes all post-season events. ALTERNATES

Page 5: 2016-2017 Razorback Marching Band Handbook

5

The Razorback Marching Band is a highly visible performing ensemble that performs multiple shows each season. High performance standards and good attendance are key components to maintaining the excellence and tradition of this program. In an effort to maintain these standards, the RMB designates a number of alternates for every pregame and halftime show. Initial selection of alternates is based on chair placement and marching auditions at the beginning of Early Week. Unexcused absences from Early Week rehearsals will result in alternate status (unless otherwise approved by the directors). Alternates are full members of the band and they play a vital role in the success of the RMB.

• Alternates will always shadow a marching member of the RMB during rehearsals of pregame and halftime unless the director running the rehearsal calls for alternates to step out. This could be the case during run-throughs right before performances or during intricate drill.

• All alternates are required to challenge the person they are shadowing on the designated challenge days.

• The directors (in conjunction with visual leaders) will determine who each alternate will shadow during rehearsals.

• Challenges will be held during rehearsals. Any member who is not present at a challenge and has not notified the directors beforehand forfeits their challenge.

REHEARSAL EXPECTATIONS

In order to maintain the high performance standards of the Razorback Marching Band, it is necessary members come to rehearsal prepared. Part of this preparation includes having all required materials: music in a flip folder, drill cards, appropriate shoes, towel, and water. Members are also expected to come to rehearsal with the proper attitude and a willingness to improve. Respect to leadership and your fellow band members are vital to the success of our band. GRADING

Each member of the class starts with a grade of “A”. If a member follows all prescribed guidelines and meets all expectations, he or she will receive a final grade of “A” for the course. However, if a member does not follow the guidelines and expectations outlined in this handbook, he or she will have their grade lowered accordingly. These guidelines and expectations include the following:

• Attendance – see section on “Attendance” • Preparedness for Class – including, but not limited to: memorization of music,

drill, etc. • Responsibilities of Maintaining Borrowed Property – including instruments,

equipment, and uniforms • Conduct, Attitude, and Participation – including the University of Arkansas Code

of Student Life, respect for fellow students, staff, fans, and the institution of the “Razorback Marching Band”. See section on “Conduct Policies”

SCHOLARSHIPS

The University of Arkansas Bands Program is able to offer a

robust scholarship program to music majors and non-music majors due to the continued strong support of university administration, alumni and friends of the program. Scholarship awards and amounts are based on the merits of a student’s audition. A student receiving a scholarship from the band program is required to maintain a 2.5 GPA and participate in the fall and spring ensembles listed in their respective scholarship contract.

Every student on scholarship will have one semester of probation if the student's GPA falls below the 2.5 threshold. The student will continue to receive his or her scholarship during the probationary period. The student's scholarship will be discontinued after the probationary semester if the student's GPA has not risen above the 2.5 benchmark. A student can only be placed on probation once during their academic tenure at the university. A student's scholarship will be automatically discontinued if their GPA falls below 2.5 for the second time.

The Internet is not a proper forum for resolution of issues relating to the Razorback Marching Band. We understand our organization to be a team, a family, and what takes place within the confines of our activities should remain there. ARKANSAS FIGHT

Hit that line! Hit that line! Keep on going, Take that ball right down the field! Give a cheer. Rah! Rah! Never fear. Rah! Rah! Arkansas will never yield! On your toes, Razorbacks, to the finish, Carry on with all your might! For it's A-A-A-R-K-A-N-S-A-S for Arkansas! Fight! Fight! Fi-i-i-ght!

ALMA MATER Pure as the dawn on the brow of thy beauty Watches thy soul from the mountains of God Over the Fates of thy children departed Far from the land where their footsteps have trod. Beacon of hope in the ways dreary lighted; Pride of our hearts that are loyal and true; From those who adore unto one who adores us- Mother of Mothers, we sing unto you. We, with our faces turned high to the Eastward, Proud of our place in the vanguard of Truth, Will sing unto thee a new song of thanksgiving- Honor to God and the Springtime of Youth. Shout of the victor or tear of the vanquished; Sunshine or tempest thy heart is e'er true; Pride of the Hills and the white-laden Lowlands- Mother of Mothers, we kneel unto you. Ever the Legions of Sin will assail us, Ever the Battle in Cities afar; Still in the depths will thy Spirit eternal Beckon us on like a piloting Star. Down in dim years do thy dead children call thee, Wafted to Sleep while the Springtime was new; We, of the Present, thy hope of the Future- Mother of Mothers, we pray unto you.
