ADOPT AN OAKLAND SCHOOL 2016-17 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

Salesforce volunteers provided more than 100 hours of support to Bret Harte Middle School during the 2016-17 school year.

Bret Harte’s diverse community embraces mutual respect, hard work, and resilience in pursuit of academic excellence during the transition to young adulthood. Likewise, the Sales Department at Salesforce believes in the fundamental importance of diligence in striving towards success.

These shared values were the foundation for a partnership between Bret Harte and Salesforce during the 2016-17 school year. The Sales Department was able to:

• Collaborate with students to complete several projects during a Campus Beautification Day.

• Reorganize the library into a more effective and inviting learning environment.

• Organize a Teacher Appreciation Lunch for all Bret Harte teachers.

“The Salesforce volunteers are great! They have helped us with everything we’ve requested support on, and always with a big smile and lots of enthusiasm!”

- JAMILA GORDON COMMUNITY SCHOOL MANAGER

LIBRARY REORGANIZATIONIt’s no secret that a clean, organized workspace is essential to success in both academic and professional settings. The dedicated Sales team from Salesforce answered the call to improve the library space at Bret Harte because they believe that it is vital to student success. Amazingly, they completed the project in just one day, reorganizing the shelves and optimizing workspaces and technological resources.

“Salesforce brings not only funding, but time, expertise, volunteer power, and thoughtful partnership to make a deep impact on Oakland schools.”- BRIAN STANLEY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OAKLAND PUBLIC EDUCATION FUND

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATIONWhen Bret Harte staff requested support to make their campus inviting and efficient, the Salesforce team of volunteers applied and won a mini-grant from the Salesforce Foundation to make a difference!

Volunteers painted the teacher’s lounge a welcoming blue, spread a layer of mulch chips in various garden beds across campus, and organized the Oakland Unified School District’s central library storage facility, which is also housed on the Bret Harte Campus.

TEACHER APPRECIATIONIn May, the Salesforce Volunteer team hosted all of the Bret Harte teachers at their San Francisco offices for a teacher appreciation event. Teachers ate a delicious lunch and enjoyed the change of scenery from campus.

The volunteer team wanted to recognize the incredible efforts our teachers make to shape our children into the leaders of tomorrow. The lunch was a great way to end the school year and celebrate Salesforce’s partnership with Bret Harte.

“I’m grateful to Salesforce volunteers for making this happen for our kids and the community.”

- BRIAN TANG, COMMUNITY SCHOOL MANAGER

Volunteers were enjoying their work so much, students asked if they could join in, and were also proud to have a hand in improving their campus.

With this service day, the school became more inviting, teachers now have a space to rest and rejuvenate, and schools throughout Oakland benefit from having access to more library books.

ABOUT BRET HARTEMIDDLE SCHOOL

Bret Harte Middle School is located in the Dimond/Laurel neighborhood. Students come from a large geographic area, making the student population one of the most ethnically and economically diverse in Oakland. Bret Harte Middle School is attended by over 550 students, with 83% from low-income families.

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND Throughout their partnership with Bret Harte Middle School, volunteers from Salesforce very willingly went the extra mile. When school starts in August, Addison from Salesforce will continue to talk to all staff at Salesforce to generate ideas for how Salesforce can continue to help. Addison and her team also ordered food and plenty of drinks at the teacher appreciation party to ensure the teachers felt relaxed during their time away from the classroom. Salesforce volunteers were a great source of support during the 2016-17 school year, and their many projects have built a sustainable partnership for the future.
