Hackathons – What are they?
► Industry Submits Challenges
► Developers Build Prototypes
► Mentors Provide Industry Insight
► Judges Assess Potential and Award Prizes
54 hour-long event to prototype solutions to industry problems
Unearthed Event Schedule
Friday – Event Kick off
Saturday – Coding!
Sunday – Presentations/Judging
• 5 min demo / presentation + 5 min Q&A
• Industry, Tech, and VC judges
1st Prize Cash, Glory
2nd Prize Cash, Glory
Young Innovator Prizes
2014 Problem Sets – RioTinto
1. Oversize Rock Detection – Supported by tipping video from site
• oversized rocks can damage crushers or bog them costing $Ms.
2. Mobile Maps – Supported by 1 year worth of GIS grade block data
• Being able to visualise the mining blocks would allow for more clear planning their work and the direction of the mine progression.
3. Maintenance Logic Checking – Supported by schematic
• Determining which conveyor to take down for maintenance, it is not always clear what the up and downstream impact will be.
Judging Criteria
1. How Creative is the solution?
2. Is it Impactful?
3. How Easy is it to Use?
4. Finally is it Functional/Viable?
1st Prize – Newton Labs
Pre-crusher large bolder detection with off the shelf accelerometers and real time mathematical analysis.

Unearthed Perth 2015
54 Hours
80 developers
5 Industry
Challenges 15 High Quality Prototypes
8 teams with follow up
1st Prize – J-Bay The J Bay Team comprised four students all from the UWA with backgrounds in physics, computer science, mathematics and engineering. The students addressed the data set and problems identified by Iluka Resources and provided an instantaneous, efficient and objective solution. Further opportunities: Team J Bay is currently in discussion with Iluka to continue building their prototype with Iluka Geologist during the upcoming winter break. .
Challenges Overview
1. WesTrac + AWS: Can we predict maintenance needs?
2. QLD Dept of Natural Resources and Mines: What is the next
generation resources data API?
3. BMA Coal: Can we monitor and visualise stockpiles in 3-D?
4. BMA Coal: Can we analyse particle size in real-time?
5. BMA Coal: Can we better track our drillrig operations?
1st Prize - SmartLumps SmartLumps is a prototype implementation of a low cost sensor platform designed to track the quality of coal (among other metrics) throughout the coal chain (from Pit to Port). A prototype visualisation interface has also been delivered to demonstrate what would be possible with the data made available. Team Smartlumps included a software engineer, designer, web developer, and micro controller engineer
