President’s Message
Dear Friends of Life Enrichment Options,
Thank you for your support through the year 2013! From new events to raising money for our fourth home to planning for the future of LEO, you were with us along the way.
Our gravity car races were a focus for LEO as we re-named them the Challenge Series Races with a new look and feel. We are also working with a wonderful group of volunteers to develop a proto-type shell for a new car. This will lead us to produce a second set of cars so more communities can have the fun of a Challenge Series Race, and more children with special needs can have the thrill of flying down the hill toward the green flag and a win!
Other LEO accomplishments this past year were about recognizing special people in the community who give of themselves in unique ways. Last May we started the Mother’s Lunch to honor and pamper the mothers of children with developmental disabilities – just so they know they are an inspiration and deserve special recognition. We also joined with other non-profits in the local community for the Caring Community Awards, recognizing those who volunteer in ways that support people with developmental disabilities.
Our fundraising efforts for the year have placed us in a good position as we look for property for our next housing project, located in the upper Snoqualmie Valley for the many families in that community who are raising sons and daughters with special needs.
We continue to work toward building a more sustainable organization so LEO will be here for many, many years to come. We are building our future, based on the values set by our founding members, and carried forward by all of us. As the year comes to an end and after a year of conversation about what it means to transition to new leadership for LEO, we begin our search for our first Executive Director. We are excited about what this new change will mean for the expansion of our work into the community.
Sincerely,
Nancy Whitaker President Board of Directors
• Continued to enjoy the support given to us by the many classic car shows organized by Marv Nielsen and sponsored by Sunset Hiway Cruisers and Triple XXX Rootbeer Drive-in.
• Enjoyed sharing in community celebrations by participating in the Salmon Days and Festival at Mt Si parades.
• Continued our support of the Si View Metro Parks’ and the Issaquah Parks Department’s recreation programs for those with developmental disabilities.
• Began the search for an Executive Director to lead our organization, which will empower us in our journey to expand our services and sustain our mission.
Highlights of 2013
3
• Welcomed three new Board Members – Issaquah Police Commander Stan Conrad, long-standing Challenge Series Races volunteer, Sam Levenson, and Christopher Villa, CEO/Executive Director of i9 Sports
& Mobile Gaming Revolution.
• Hosted our first annual “Mother’s Lunch,” a free event for families to celebrate moms of children with developmental disabilities.
• Developed a new name and logo for the Challenge Series Races and began the process of expanding the program to include a second set of cars and trailer.
• Enjoyed the success of our fundraising luncheon, “It’s About the Journey,” where our amazing supporters helped us raise over $88,000 towards our plans for a fourth home to be located in the Snoqualmie Valley.
• Shared information about our organization at several outreach events including the King County Family Coalition’s Legislative Forum, The ARC’s Transition Fair, Highlands Day, Fenders on Front Street, Issaquah ArtWalks, the Down Syndrome Community’s Buddy Walk and Autism Day.
• Continued our recognition of local employers who employ those with developmental disabilities by acknowledging them in advertisements placed in several local newspapers, and encouraging the community to patronize those businesses.
• Partnered with AtWork! and the Tavon Center to recognize community volunteers Samantha Garrard, Chris Brandt, the Rotary Club of Issaquah and Athletes for Kids with Caring Community Awards at the annual Issaquah Chamber of Commerce awards luncheon.
• Our Issaquah and Snoqualmie Outreach Committees presented two very well-attended community education events - “Using the iPad as a tool for independent living” and “Healthy lifestyles: Let’s talk about nutrition and exercise for people with developmental disabilities.”

The Four Cornerstones of LEO
Housing for those with disabilities can be a challenge. LEO is dedicated to developing safe and comfortable living arrangements where the residents feel as if they are a part of a “family.” A lifestyle of living, working and enjoying recreation within the community is our goal.
Employment is an integral part of connecting with and contributing to the community. The feeling of having the responsibility of a job, whether it’s paid or volunteer work, provides that satisfying feeling of self-worth.
Recreation is a way to enjoy the company of friends while participating in drama club, chorus, bowling and more. LEO partners with Parks and Recreation programs in offering these types of opportunities for those with disabilities. LEO also presents the popular Challenge Series Races each summer in cooperation with service clubs around the state.
Educational Opportunities offer knowledge and build confidence to deal with the many challenges facing those with disabilities, their parent, caregivers, therapists and others in their lives. As a fundamental part of LEO’s mission to advocate and be a support to empower parents, free presentations on relevant topics are offered at least twice per year.
