RADFORDThe longest tenured head coach at Radford, Jeff Woods has a longlistofaccomplishments,bothasacoachandaplayer.
Entering his 27th season at the helm of the Highlanders, Woods reachedanothermilestonewhenhecapturedhis200thwinasahead coach during the 2010 campaign. The feat came on Sept. 25,2010inFarmville,Va.whenRadforddefeatedLongwood,3-2in overtime.
In2009,Woodsenjoyedoneofhisprogram’sbestseasonsinrecentyears.TheHighlandersclaimedtheirthirdEastDivisionregularseasontitleandpostedawinningrecord(11-10)in2009,whileseveralmembersofhissquadwererecognizedwithleagueand state accolades.
Forthefirsttimesinceits2001inductionintotheNorPac,aschoolrecordfourstudent-athletesclaimedall-conferencehonors,includingtwoonthefirstteamaswellashisgoalkeeper,whogarneredDefensivePlayeroftheYear(EastDivision)honors.Alongwiththoseaccolades,twomembersearnedall-staterecognition.
Radfordhasposteda34-29recordin11seasonsofcompetitionandstillremainstheonlyEastDivi-sionsquadtoplayfortheNorPacChampionship(2003).TheiroverallwintotalshavealsoimprovedsincethemovetotheNorPac.TheHighlandershavewonatleasteightmatchesinnineofthelast11 seasons, even though it plays a tough non-conference schedule that features several nationally-ranked opponents on the road every year.
AnothersuccessunderWoodshasbeenRadford’splayathome,recordinga34-6marksince2000.Theywonaschool-recordsixhomematchesin2004andhavebeenperfectfivetimes.
In2004,heguidedtheHighlanderstotheirfirstundefeatedconferencerecord(6-0NorPacEast)inschoolhistoryandaperfect6-0recordathome.In2003,heguidedRadfordtoitsfirstappearanceinthe NorPac Championship Game in just their third season in the conference.
After playing an instrumental role in Radford joining the NorPac in 2001, he guided them to the 2002 EastDivisiontitle.ItwasthefirstNorPactitleinschoolhistory,andtheHighlandersdidsoinjusttheirsecondseason.Theywouldgoontofinishthirdinthe2002NorPacChampionships,finishingthesea-son9-11,theirbestfinishsince1996.Their4-1EastDivisionrecordwasthefirstwinningconferenceseason since going 4-3 during the 1991 season in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Under his leadership the past 11 season, he has had 28 of his players named to all-conference teams, including 2002&2004EastDivisionoffensiveplayersoftheyearErinLenhardtandHopeBatesand2009EastDivisionDefensivePlayeroftheYear,JenniferWisniewski.
IntheirinauguralNorPacseason,heguidedtheHighlanderstoan8-15overalland3-3conferencerecord,tyingforsecondplaceintheEastdivision.Twoofhisplayers,TessaBrookesandBrookePeterson,werenamedtotheall-conferencefirstandsecondteamsrespectively.Petersonalsogarneredall-tournamenthonors.
WoodspickeduphisfirstNorPacwinonSept.9,2001,intheirinauguralgame,defeatingAppalachianState2-1athome.Radfordalsowontheconsolationchampionshipattheirfirsttournamentwithanother2-1victoryoverASU.
Overtheyears,hehasenjoyedsuccessatboththecollegiateandinternationallevels.Hehasbeenrecognizedforhisachievementsinthecoachingranksovertheyears.In1996,heledtheHighlanderstoa10-8markandwasnamedtheColonialAthleticAssociationCoachoftheYear.In1991,WoodsguidedRadfordtoa17-7record,itsmostsuccessfulseasonever,andwasnamedtheSouthRegionCo-CoachoftheYearbythenationalcoaches’association.
Internationally,WoodsservedasanassistantcoachfortheUSAMen’sFieldHockeysquadduringthe1996SummerOlympicsinAtlanta.In1991,WoodswastheassistantcoachfortheU.S.teamattheWorldUniversityGamesandthe1995PanAmericanGamesinArgentina.HealsocoachedatfiveU.S.OlympicSportsFestivalandguidedhisteamstogoldandsilvermedalfinishesin1989,1990and1993.
Woods,agraduateoftheDefenseInformationSchool(DINFOS)inPrint,BroadcastandElectronicJournalism,servedasaNavyJournalistwiththeAmericanForcesNetwork(AFN)onMidwayIsland.HealsospenttimewiththeAFNattheNavalCommunicationsStation,HaroldE.Holt,ontheNorthwestCapeofAustralia.
HisplayingcareerbeganoverseasasanexchangestudentatBirkbeckCollegeinLondonin1984.Afterreturn-ingtotheU.S.,WoodsplayedontheEastteamduringthe1986U.S.OlympicSportsFestival.HewasalsoamemberoftheHalifaxFightingHaddocks.
Woods’coachingcareeralsostartedoverseaswhilestationedwiththeUnitedStatesNavyinAustralia.ItwastherethathebegancoachingtheAmericanbaseballteamastheytraveledtotournamentandgamesthroughoutWesternAustralia.HealsocompetedinNavyRugbyandplayedaseasonofAustralianRulesFootballwhilestationedinExmouth,W.Australia.

RADFORDFormer Radford standout Tiffany (Church) Saun-ders returns to the sidelines for her fourth season astheprogram’sassistantcoach.
Followingfourseasonsintheredandwhite,Saunders(’07)willbeinvolvedinallphasesoftheprogramandwillworkprimarilywithgoalkeepersandforwards.Knownforhercreativityasastop-per on penalty corners during her playing days, Saunderswillalsoplayapartinworkingwiththeoffensive corner unit.
Asafour-yearstarter(2003-06),Saunderswasaversatile and creative player under Woods. She playedkeyrolesinRadford’srunner-upfinishinthe 2003 NorPac Tournament and its 2004 East Divisionchampionship,whichincludedaperfect6-0 regular season.
“TiffanyisagreatadditiontotheHighlanderfieldhockeyprogram,”saidWoods.“Herfamiliaritywithoursystemandwhatweexpectoutofourplayerswillmakeforasmoothtransitionintothecoachingranks.”
Playingalmosteverypositionexceptgoalkeeper,sheleftRadfordrankedsecondincareerassistswith20.Sheamassed11(secondmostinaRUsingleseason)ofthosehelpersduringabreakoutjuniorseasonwhensheassumedthefulltimeroleofstop-per.That2005totalwasthemostsince1991andrankedhersecondoverallintheNorPac.
Saundersconcludedhercareerwithsevenassistsandthreegoalsduringherseniorcampaign, helping the Highlanders to a second-straight third place victory in the Nor-Pactournamentwhileearningall-tournamenthonorsin2006.

Formed in 1982, the NorPac Conference has evolved over the past 30 years from an initial Californiamembershiptothecurrenteastandwestblend.In1998,thegrowthanddevelopmentoftheNorPacasanNCAAsingle-sportconferencewasassistedbyathree-yeargrantfromtheUnitedStatesOlympicCommittee(USOC)andtheNCAA,aswellassupportfromtheUnitedStates Field Hockey Association (USFHA). Through the grant opportunity, the restructuring oftheconferenceincludedpreviousmembersDavisandElkinsCollege,MissouriState,SaintLouisUniversityandcurrentoriginalmembersCalifornia,PacificandStanford.BothAppala-chianStateandDavidsonacceptedinvitationstojoinin2000,followedbyRadfordin2001. Longwoodwasaddedtotheconferencein2005asaprovisionalmemberwhilereclassifyingtoanNCAADivisionImembershipandbecameeligibleforitsfirstconferencetournamentin2007.UCDavisisthenewestmembertotheleague.AftertheAggies’programwaselevatedfromclubtointercollegiatestatus,theNorPacConferencewelcomedthereestablishedprograminJuly2008.WiththeadditionofUCDavisastheeighthmember,theconferenceresumedsubdivision-alplayin2009.TheAggiesjoinedCalifornia,PacificandStanfordtomakeuptheWestDivision.AppalachianState,Davidson,LongwoodandRadfordformedtheEastDivision. Thesubdivisionalscheduleculminateswithaconferencepostseasontournamentforalleightmembers.In2011,thetournamentreturnstoStanfordforthefifthtime,joiningDavidson(three)and Saint Louis (three) as multiple-year hosts. Appalachian State (2001), California (2005) and Longwood(2008)haveservedasahostinstitutiononce. Since 1999, the NorPac Field Hockey Conference has received an NCAA play-in opportunity or aconferenceautomaticqualification(2005).Inoveradecade,NorPacrepresentativesare9-2inNCAAplay-ingames.Thisyear’sleaguechampionwillhostthewinneroftheAtlantic10Confer-enceTournamentonNovember8,2011.

theRadford’sFieldHockeyprogram.Thefielditselfisnaturalgrass,oneofonlytwoNorPacConferencefacilitiestoofferanaturalplayingsurface.
The fansideof the fieldoffersseating for fans,while theoppositesidefeatures the teambenches,ascorer’s tableareaandadedicatedscore-board.
It also features lights, allowing the team to practice or play after dark.Originally designed as Radford’s intercollegiate soccer field, the stadiumwasconvertedforFieldHockey-onlyusein2002.
ThefieldispartoftheDedmonCenter,astate-of-the-artrecreationalandconvocationcomplex,openedin1981.Thecenterwasonlythetenthper-manentstructurewithanair-supportedfabricroofbuiltintheUnitedStates,anditssuperbdesignandversatilityhavemadeitaneye-poppingadditionto campus.
Thecomplexfeaturesanatatoriumandoutsidefacilitieswhichincludeabaseballfield,tenniscourts,asoftballfield,intramuralfieldsandanoutdoorjogging track.

whenshetookofficeonJune1,2005.ShecametoRUwithmorethan30yearsofexperienceinstategovernment,thecorporateandlegalworlds,andhighereducation.
Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’sinitiativetobecomeoneofthetop50mastersuniversitiesinthenation.TheRadfordUniversitystrategicplan“7-17”,completedin2007atherdirection,
identifiesfourstrategicdirectives--theinvestmentinpeople,programs,globalandlo-cal society and the future of Radford University.UnderPresidentKyle’sleadership,theuniversityalsoaddeditsfirstdoctoralprogram

aproductoftheGalaxpublicschoolssystem.ShegraduatedfromGuilfordCollegeinGreensboro,NorthCarolina and did her postgraduate studies in English atSouthernMethodistUniversityinDallas,Texas.ShereceivedherJurisDoctoratefromtheUniversityofVir-giniaSchoolofLawandlaterearnedherMBAfromtheCollege of William and Mary.
PresidentKyleservedasExecutiveDirectoroftheVirginiaLotteryfor11years,underthreesuccessivegovernors.FirstappointedbyGovernorGeorgeAllenin1994,shewasreappointedbyGovernorJamesGilmore,andthenreappointedonceagainbyGovernorMarkWarner.Previously,Ms.KylewasemployedbyCSXCorporation,aninternationaltransportationcompany,whereshebecamethecompany’sfirstfemaleofficer.BeforejoiningCSXCorporation,shewasanattorneywithMcGuire,Woods,LLPinRichmond.ShealsotaughtEnglishforsixyearsatThomasNelsonCommunityCollegeinHamp-ton, Virginia.

SincebeingintroducedasRadfordUniversity’sDirectorofAthleticsinthefallof2007,RadfordnativeRobertLineburghashelpedusherinaneweraofHighlanderathletics,markedbyunprecedentedon-andoff-fieldimprovementsandsuccesses.Inhisshorttimewiththedepartment,Lineburghasbeenthecatalystforanumberof
changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.HismostvisibleinfluencestodatehavebeenontheDedmonCenterandRadford
University’snew700-seatbaseballstadium.Beginninginthespringof2008,theDedmonCenter,thecenterpieceofHighlander
athletics,underwenttransformationstothearena,includinganewsteel-supportedroof,anewbasketballfloor,renovatedathleticoffices,anew-looknatatorium,andimprovedathletic locker, training, and medical facilities.AlongwiththeinitialupgradestotheDedmonCenter,animprovedstate-of-the-art
strengthandconditioningroom,newticketofficeandLearningEnhancementCenter(LEC),whichhousesstudent-athleteacademicsupport,werecompleted/addedin2009.In2010,facilityupgradesincludedanewhigh-techvideoboard/soundsystemtothe
DedmonCenteraswellasanewplayingsurface/irrigationsystemanddugoutstotheRadfordUniversityBaseballField.Thispastspring,RadfordtransformeditsbaseballprograminAprilof2011byopen-

Southtitles.Women’ssoccerandsoftballclaimedregularseasoncrowns,whilemen’stennisadvancedtotheNCAATournamentwiththeirfourthleaguetournamentchampi-onshipinfiveyears.Alongwiththeircompetitivesuccess,theHighlandershavedefinedthetruemeaning
of“student-athlete”duringLineburg’stenure.Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,RafordledallBigSouthinstitutionsbyplacing58.3percentofitsstudent-athletesonthecon-ference’sPresidentialHonorRoll.In2008-09,theHighlandershad57.9percentoftheirstudents on the list.Heandhisstaffhavealsobeenresponsibleforcreatingafive-yearstrategicplanfor

ThemissionoftheStudent-AthleteSupportServices(SASS)officeforRadford University Athletics is to promote, assist, and provide counsel to allstudent-athletes.Itsprimary,constantgoalistodevelopgraduatesandoutstandingcitizenswhohavecontributedintheareasofathleticcompetitionduring their tenures of education.
LocatedintheDedmonAthleticCenter,thenewlyestablishedLearningEnhancementCenterisequippedwithcomputers,tutorialrooms,andastudylounge.
The Learning Enhancement Center provides direction for student-athletes via academiccounselinginconjunctionwithadvisorsfromtherespectivecol-leges at Radford University. Academic support services such as tutoring and supervisedstudyhallareprovided,aswellascareerplanning,monitoringofeligibilitystatus,andahostofotherguidanceandadvisoryservices.

A component that is vital to Radford student-athletes is the strengthandconditioningprogramdirectedbyStrengthandConditioning Coach Michael Shumaker.
HighlanderAthleticshaslongbeenrecognizedasoneoftheleaders among Mid-Atlantic schools in its conditioning and strengthtraining.Ithasbeenaninstrumentalpartinthesuc-cess of Radford University sports through the years. Under the direction of Shumaker and Assistant Strength and Condition-ing coaches Tim Ridley and Michele Huffman, the program is designed to help each student-athlete reach his or her full potential in their respective sport.
Each Radford University student-athlete has strength and conditioningprogramsuniquetotheirgoalsasaplayer.Thisprogram,developedbyShumaker,helpsprepareRadfordstudent-athletes for the long and rigorous in-season schedule.
