A New PresidentEven before he was officially on the job, UNBC’s new president visited the Northwest region. George Iwama attended the convocation ceremonies in Terrace, Gitwinksihlkw, and Prince Rupert as part of a 3200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology.

Health Science ExpansionFrom the local graduation of Nurses to expanded local opportunities for medical education, the Northwest is an emerging centre for various UNBC programs aimed at educating health professionals.

◄ Sarah Kotai, Jo-Anne Kerr, Kathryn Jardine, and Laura Paterson were among the founding group of Nursing graduates in Terrace this year. The program has attracted dozens of students from the region.

◄ Jim Klonarakis of Kitimat was a member of the second-ever group of Northern Medical Program graduates. Jim is completing a residency in Anaesthesia in Saskatchewan.

► Three Northern Medical Program students (pictured here with Dr. Peter Newbery) recently completed their third year of education in Terrace. Never before had the NMP placed students in a community outside of Prince George for a full year of study.

► Five students from the region are now Northern Medical Program students. They are Chris Chapman (Terrace), Moni Vaid (Kitimat), Lauren Feldhoff (Kitimat), and Karissa and Jason Hetland: the first brother-and-sister pair in the NMP. They grew up in Kitwanga.
