God in Nature The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world. It consists of nearly 3,000 individual reefs and
approximately 900 islands that stretch over 1,400 miles. This reef is spread out over an area of around 133,000
square miles (around the same size as the country of Germany or half the size of Texas). Its age has been calculat-
ed at around 20 million years. It is located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is the
largest single structure made by living organisms and is so large it can be seen from outer space. The beautiful
colors in the reef range from shades of rich blues and aquamarines to lush greens making it one of the most aes-
thetically pleasing places on earth. This monstrous structure was built by billions of tiny organisms known as
coral polyps. It has been selected as a World Heritage Site and labelled as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of
the World. The diversity of life contained in the Great Barrier Reef is absolutely astonishing and is one of the
most diverse locations on the planet! More than 1,500 species of fish call the reef home. 17 species of sea snake
live on the reef as well as 5,000 species of mollusk and even 215 species of birds. 1.4 to 1.7 million birds use the
reef to breed. The islands of the reef support 2,195 known species of plant life. The fishing industry in the Great
Barrier Reef is controlled by the Queensland Government and is worth $1 billion annually. It also offers a unique
tourist destination for around 2 million people a year and generates approximately $6 billion annually. The Great
Barrier Reef is just another example of how God’s creations, through the marvel of instinct, in turn create spectac-
ular and awe inspiring structures for our sheer enjoyment!

Michael
The Knights of the Altar of St. Jo-
seph is a men’s group that meets
monthly in the Catholic churches in
our surrounding area. This group is
for men and their sons ages 12 and up
for prayer and faith sharing. The men
pray the Holy Rosary in front of the
Blessed Sacrament. This is a won-
derful opportunity for all men to
grow closer to God and to rediscover
their calling as men and fathers of
Almighty God. We look forward to
seeing you there. All men are wel-
come at any time!

Hello, Dear Ministry Leaders!
First, Happy New Year!
Secondly, thank you so much for all that you do to serve the good people of Sacred Heart.
Thirdly, if you haven't already heard, we will be having a MANDATORY day of recollection for all liturgical
ministers on Saturday, January 25th, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Lunch will be provided). It will begin at the
church and then move to the gym for lunch.
This will be for all those who serve in any way related to the Sacred Liturgy (sacristans, ushers, extraordinary
ministers of holy communion, linen cleaners, church cleaners, lectors, altar servers, choir, etc.). It is mandatory in
the sense that everyone who is on our lists is expected to attend if they would like to continue serving. If they have
a conflict with that date and time, they can make up the training with me personally and would have to let me
know via this email address so that we can schedule something for them.
The purpose of this day of prayer together is to thank God for all of you, to thank you for all you do, to allow all
of us an opportunity to draw closer to the Lord who has called us to serve, to learn more about the liturgy at which
we serve, and finally to all be on the same page with regard to the practical "how" we can serve.
Please share this with anyone to whom it would apply!
Thanks and God bless you,
Fr. Michael
