Indian Railways launches Vikalp scheme for waitlisted passengers
Indian Railways has launched Vikalp scheme to
facilitate waitlisted passengers to get an
alternative train accommodation. The scheme
has been launched on pilot basis in trains
running on Delhi-Lucknow and Delhi-Jammu
sectors for 6 months and option will be limited
to Mail and Express trains. With this scheme,
Indian Railways aim to achieve the twin
objectives Providing confirmed accommodation to waitlisted passengers. Ensure
optimal utilization of available accommodation for these passengers. Waitlisted
passengers will get confirmed accommodation in next alternative train if they opt
for it while booking their tickets online. Once they opt for it passengers will get SMS
alert on their mobile phone about getting confirmed accommodation in alternative
train. No extra charges will be paid passenger to avail this scheme or any refund
provided for the difference of fare.
Facebook to help BSNL set up 100 wi-fi hotspots in rural India
Social media giant Facebook has partnered with
the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
(BSNL) for setting up 100 wi-fi (Wireless
Fidelity) sites in rural India. In this regard both
entities have inked an agreement under which
Facebook will sponsor 100 wi-fi hotspots in
villages across west and southern India. It will
pay 5 lakh rupees for BSNL bandwidth for each hotspot per annum. The partnership
will be for three years and it can be further extended for two more years. With this
BSNL will be able to set up wi-fi hotspots in areas where it is not commercially

feasible to run those and also extending its optical fibre connectivity services to
these hotspots.
Punjab to set up bio-ethanol refinery to stop menace of straw burning
Punjab Government has announced to set up bio-
ethanol refinery in the state to tackle the menace
of wheat and paddy straw burning. In this regard,
state government has inked MoU with consortium
of Beta Renewables, Novozymes and CVC India
Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. for project estimatedworth Rs. 950 crore during the Progressive
Punjab Investor Summit, 2015. Would play an important role in solving the chronic
problem of straw burning of leftover agro-based produce especially from wheat and
rice feedstocks. Benefit farmers economically, as they would be paid for their agro-
based produce to extract bio-ethanol. It would also help in preventing the loss of
fertility of soil and damage to environment by reducing air pollution.

Sania Mirza (India) and Martina Hingis
(Switerzerland) has won the 2015 BNP Paribas
WTA Finals Women’s double category. In the
final match played in Singapore, the Indo-Swiss
duo defeated Spanish pair of Garbine Muguruza
and Carla Suarez Navarro by 6-0, 6-3 score. It
overall ninth World Tennis Association (WTA)
doubles titles won by the Indo-Swiss pair together in 2015 season so far. The duo

New Zealand wins 2015 Rugby World Cup
New Zealand has won the 2015 Rugby World Cup
for record third time by defeating Australia. In the
final match played at Twickenham, England the
winning team defeated Australian team by 34-17
score. With this victory, it also became the first
nation to retain the Webb Ellis Cup and it wastheir first victory on the foreign soil. Rugby World
Cup is contested every four years between the top international teams. It was first
held in 1987 and was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. The winning team is
awarded with the William Webb Ellis Cup named after William Webb Ellis who
invented sport of rugby according to a popular legend. Four countries have won the
trophy since its inception. New Zealand has won it three times (1987, 2011 and
2015).
Eminent Archaeologist VN Misra passes away
One of the eminent archaeologists of post-
Independent India, Virendra Nath Misra passed
away in Pune, Maharashtra. He was 81. He was
best known as the doyen of Indian prehistoric
archaeology and for his extensive field studies and
excavations in Central India and Rajasthan. In
these two regions, he had made several
significant contributions to the reconstruction of India’s prehistoric past. VN Misra
hailed from Uttar Pradesh and joined Pune based Deccan College after completing
his .G. degree in Anthropology from Lucknow University. He also had served as

Director of Deccan College in 2000 and had retired as Professor of Prehistoric
