As Franklinton Medical Practice with Dr. Stephanie Brown and many area nurses give great
value to the free youth summer program. The goals of the well-child examination in school-aged
children (kindergarten through early adolescence) are promoting health, detecting disease, and
counceling to prevent injury and future health problems. A compete history was address any
concerns from the patient and family and screen for lifestyle habits, including diet, physcialactivity, hours of sleep per night, eyes, dental and safety habits. A full physical examination to
100 youth for over $100 per cost, per youth free to the parents with family receiving
information on health, healthy eating and starting a physical activities programs. All of this on
the sign-up festivial for the youth summer camp.
School-aged children (kindergarten through early adolescence are establishing patterns of
behavior that may last a lifetime: therefore, it is important to counsel these patients about
healthy lifestyle practices during well-child examinations. Children and families should be
advised to eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy products,
beans, fish, and lean meats, while limiting sugar, fast food, and highly processed foods. Children
should engage in at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physcial activity, and
screen time should be limited to no more than one to two hours of quality programming daily.
Most school-aged children require 11 hours of sleep per night. Decreased sleep is associated
with behavioral issues, decreased concentration at school, and obesity. Children should brush
their teeth twice per day with a toothpaste containing fluoride. Unintentional injury is the
leading cause of death inthis age group in the United States, and families should be counseled
on sports safety. Because high-risk behaviors may start in early adolescence, many experts
recommend screening for tobacco, alcohol, and drug use beginning at 11 years of age. Sexually
active adolescents should be counseled on protecting against sexually transmitted infections,
and should be screened for these infections if indicated. The American Academy of Pediatrics
recommends vision and hearing screening annually or every two years in school-aged children.

U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends children should be screened for obesity, which
is defined as a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex and resources
for comprehensive, intensive behavioral interventions should be provided to children with
obesity.Amedisys (HOME HEALTH CARE) Lilly Cudjo
