Lee Smith (478) and John Franco (424) in the exclusive 400-save club. The follow-ing night, Hoffman picked up number 401 and on Monday, it was 402.

Marissa Gonzalez pitched a perfect game Saturday, May 7, to lead Cypress to a 2-0 victory over College of the Canyons in a semifinal of the Southern California Softball Regional Playoffs. Her performance in the championship game against Canyons wasn’t quite as graceful (she gave up a run), but her teammates crossed the plate 15 times in the mercy-rule victory. Breezie James became the first Cypress College athlete to reach a state tournament in three sports: volleyball, basketball, and softball. The state tourney will be held this weekend at the Maidu Sports Complex in Roseville.

Congratulations to Bob Nadell, dean of Counseling and Student Development, who has been hired as the new vice president of Student Services at Modesto Jr. College. After 27 years at Cypress College, he will depart at the end of the aca-demic year.

The winners of the out-standing faculty awards were announced at this week’s Academic Senate meeting. Helena DeCoro of the Music Department was selected for the Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Award. This year’s Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award goes to Tara McDonald of the English Department. The Faculty Development Award was presented to Jessica Puma of the Language Art Division.

Former Cypress College standout Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres became just the third pitcher in Major League Baseball history to record 400 saves when he pitched a perfect ninth inning in San Diego’s 6-5 victory on May 6 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Hoffman, who played for Chargers coach Scott Pickler in 1986 and 1987, joins all-time leaders

CHARGERS CHARGERSVolunteer Rose Espinoza is Keynote Graduation SpeakerRose Espinoza, the youngest of eight children, was

raised in a migrant camp known as Campo Colorado in the City of La Habra. Today, she’s a member of the La Habra City Council and a nationally honored volunteer with a long record of serving others in her hometown.

An advocate of volunteerism, her 860 hours per year went to a program she founded called Rosie’s Garage, a nationally recognized after-school tutoring program started in 1991 out of concern for the grow-ing gang activity and low educational attainment of children in her neighborhood.

When gang activity began to decline, it was a shining example of a neighborhood helping itself with Espinoza at the helm. The program received recogni-tion from then-President Clinton in 1994 as the Point of Light United States Presidential Service Award recipient, it has been showcased on CBS Evening News With Dan Rather and was featured on the front page of the New York Times. Her work with children was

the subject of a documentary “Rosie’s Garage,” which aired in 2002 on KCET.

At last year’s Rosie’s Garage ALMOST 5K Walk/Run a representative from Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante’s office presented a proclamation pro-claiming June 12 Rose Espinoza Day in the State of California.

Because of Espinoza’s significant impact on her community, many began to encourage Espinoza to run for city council. After three unsuccessful bids for the council, Espinoza defeated an incumbent member in 2000 to become the only woman on the City Council and the first Latina councilwoman in the history of La Habra.

She became mayor of La Habra in 2004 and was reelected to the La Habra City Council in November of 2004.

Rose received her degree in Industrial Drafting in 1988. Her drafting career as an electromechanical designer has spanned 23 years.

Central Plant operators: start your engines!Crews have finished placing enough equipment in the Central Plant (the former Women’s Shower Locker

Room) so that testing can begin. It must pass a series of tests to gain certification for ongoing use. Because the walls are not yet enclosed and the absorption unit is not yet attached, the noise will be quite loud during the testing.

The Staff Development Office has moved to B-110, on the first floor of the Business Building between the Production Center and the Assessment Center. The second floor of the Library/Administration Building will move to the second floor of Gym II, beginning May 27, to permit work on the second floor of Library/Administration as part of the Student Center project. The third and fourth floors will be renovated once the Library moves to the new L/LRC (scheduled for January). The Student Activities and International Student offices will move to the new Student Activities Building (the former M&O office) in mid June. Beginning May 25, all occupants of Tech Ed III’s second and third floors will move out for a summer of renovation. The dean’s office and support staff, as well as the counseling secretary for Health Science, will move to TE3-101.

Demolition of part of the piazza is scheduled to begin June 2. The section by SEM will be the first area to come down, followed by the area around the campanile. By mid-July the area will be clear to begin construction of the new Student Center, creating a new look to the center of campus.

A contract for the M&O Building was approved at this week’s Board meeting, and construction is sched-uled to begin at the end of the month. Parking lot 6 will be closed permanently as that is the site of the new M&O facility including the warehouse.

Paul Paiement’s ‘Hybrids’ Exhibit is Featured in the L.A. TimesPaul Paiement’s “Hybrids” exhibit at the Laguna Art Museum was featured in the Los Angeles Times on May 7.

Reviewer Holly Myer called it “an enthusiastic experiment in entomology.”“At a glance, the first half a dozen paintings in Paul Paiement’s ‘Hybrids 1.0 - 3.5’ could easily be mistaken for

straight entomological illustrations. Each of the 11-by-14-inch watercolors portrays a single insect, painstakingly rendered, floating against a pristine white ground,” she wrote. “Look closer, however, and idiosyncratic details emerge: They’re rendered in cool, candy-store colors and emblazoned with optically seductive patterns, such as bull’s-eyes and stripes. Look closer still and you’ll find strange things grafted onto their bodies: the buttons of a portable CD player across the back of a ladybug; a Nintendo control pad where a butterfly’s wings should be; or, cleverly enough, the body of a Volkswagen standing in for the shell of a beetle.”

The exhibit continues at the Laguna Art Museum through July 10. The museum is open daily from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.

More information is available by calling (949) 494-8971 or by visiting http://www.lagunaartmuseum.org.The work is also featured in a book published by Laguna Wilderness Press. For details, contact Paiement at

ext. 47137 or via e-mail at [email protected].

USC Debate Team HasCypress College Connections

At the 125th anniversary of the USC Debate Team, three of the attendees are part of the Cypress College family: Trustee Donna Miller, faculty member Pat Ganer, and Foundation Board member Darrell Essex.

To commemorate the event, a photo-graph was taken that also included Doug Bailey, Donna Miller’s former student, who is the current debate coach at Cypress High School, the incoming president of the Rotary Club of Cypress, and a local businessman.

Irv Pickler Named 2006 Americana Man of the Year

Irv Pickler, a long-time advocate of Cypress College and a Foundation Board member, is the 2006 Americana Man of the Year.

If the Pickler name sounds familiar, it should. Pickler is also the father of softball coach Brad Pickler and baseball coach Scott Pickler. Both coaches are competing in their respective playoffs this weekend.

Mr. 400 — Alumnus Trevor Hoffman Enters Elite MLB Club

Last Friday, Trevor Hoffman became the third Major League Baseball pitcher to earn at least 400 saves (see story on page 2). After playing for Cypress College coach Scott Pickler in 1986 and 1987, Hoffman transfered to the Uni-versity of Arizona. He was chosen in the 11th round of the MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He made his MLB debut with the Florida Marlins in 1993 and subsequently traded to the Padres as part of a deal that landed Gary Sheffield in Florida. During the 1998 season, Hoffman tied a National League record with 53 regular-season saves.
