POTENTATE’S MESSAGEThis was not the start I had originally written for my Potentate’s Message ... it was with a heavy heart that I write about the passing of a good man ... Noble Gary Willis.

Gary served on the Divan for the last 6 years ... 4 as Recorder and 2 as Treasurer and worked very hard on behalf of all the members. He served as Chairman of the Building Committee as well as a member of the Membership Committee and was active in the daily operations of our Center. He will be greatly missed.

The summer of fun has begun with our units attending Parades throughout northern Alberta. I have been fortunate to attend 7 Parades so far and still counting. This year we have had Job’s Daughters and DeMolay participate in some parades riding on the Legion of Honour trailer. A special thank you to Noble Isaac Brower and the LOH for allowing our fraternal family to ride on their trailer.

I would like to thank Noble David Page who undertook the position of Parade Marshall. He has done an outstanding job and has brought us into the 21st century. It is a pleasure to click onto a link and have all the information required for any parade. Thank you David!

Lady Bev and I attended Imperial in Houston Texas July 4 – 9 with Noble Murray Sutherland, Noble Fred Susun, Noble Gary Willis and his Lady Sharon, Ill Sir Barry Gogal and his Lady Janis, Ill Sir Jim Templeton and his Lady Laurie. We were fortunate to co-host (with Al Azahar) the Grand Master Chris Batty and his Lady Wendy. It was a fun and informative session. Congratulations to our newly elected Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt and First Lady Lisa. Please take a moment and check out First Lady Lisa’s project “In Dreams I Walk”. I was very proud to watch a young boy from Saskatchewan, Carter Brown help First Lady Lisa present her program. The Montreal Hospital was front and center in her presentation.

I was honored to represent and bring greeting from Al Shamal at the following events:

May 8th One Hundred and First Annual Convocation of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Alberta

June 5th The Grand Chapter of Alberta, Order of the Eastern Star. I would like to thank the ladies for their donation to our Transportation Fund.

July 21st Ladies Golf Tournament at the Edmonton Country Club. Al Shamal was the charity of choice. Thank you to Motor Corps for accompanying me to this fund raising event.

The third annual Father’s Day Pig Roast was well attended and successful. Thank you to all who helped with the set up, take down, selling tickets and preparing the food. As with all the events it would not be possible without our volunteers.

July 19th was sunny, warm and we hosted a successful Family Picnic with more than 100 in attendance. We saw many happy faces as children rode on the train, had their faces painted, jumped in the bouncy house, played in the sand and ate lots of hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream and cupcakes. A special thank-you goes to Noble Fred Susun (Kiss the Cook) and Noble Rick Shumilak and his Lady Bev who organized the day. Along with the Divan we had many volunteers out to help with a special thank you to Noble Russ Motiuk and his Lady Ines; Lady Wendy Batty; Lady Tes O’Connor and Noble Doug Pare. We also had Unit support and participation from members of the TLC (thank you to Noble Morris Riopel, Lady Gustine and Bill L’Hirondelle) and the Clowns. A special thank you to Boo Boo who was a hit with many of the children! A very special thank you to Jobs Daughters for coming out and painting faces!

Our Annual Golf Tournament will have past by the time this is printed but I would like to thank Nobles John McLay and Trevor Eliott who co-chaired this event. I know as new Nobles to our organization they found it challenging to get this event off the ground but they did an amazing job. Thank you gentlemen!

At the time of writing my report I am preparing to attend PNSA in Butte, Montana on August 13-15th as well as the new hospital opening in Montreal August 20th.

We have our Joint Ceremonial coming up September 18 and 19th in Red Deer. Remember to get a candidate for this ceremonial as an increase in membership is required to maintain our center. Please come out and support our new members and their ladies!

The family would want to thank everyone that assisted him throughout his journey on the Divan no matter how big or how small.

GARY WILLIS’ SWEET & SMOKEY BAKED BEANSThe beans served at the Fathers’ Day Pig Roast were a huge success. Many of you asked for the recipe, so here it is!

Sweet and Smokey Baked Beans

• 8 ounces bacon, (thick sliced) cut crosswise into ¼” slices• 1 large onion, � nely chopped• 1 can (48 ounce) Heinz beans with tomato sauce• 3 tablespoons brown sugar• 3 tablespoons molasses• 3 tablespoons of real Canadian maple syrup• 3 tablespoons of your barbecue sauce• 1½ tablespoons, dry mustard• 1½ tablespoons, Worcestershire sauce• 1½ tablespoons, cider vinegar• ½ teaspoon liquid smoke• coarse salt and black pepper• 2 or 3 jalapeño peppers, thinly sliced (optional)

All the ingredients can be modi� ed to taste Place the onion and the bacon in a large nonreactive saucepan over medium heat and cook until the bacon fat renders and the onion is golden brown, about 5 minutes. Pour off any excess fat

Stir in the beans and jalapeños, brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup, barbecue sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and liquid smoke.

Gently simmer the beans until thick and richly � avored, 10 minutes, use low heat and stir to keep beans from sticking. Add salt and pepper to taste. I use pepper but don’t add any salt. (jalapeño can be added at this time if desired and cooked for the last 5 minutes.)

Optional

If you have time, you can simmer beans for 5 minutes, then spoon them into an aluminium foil pan and bake in a 350º oven or in a covered grill set up for indirect grill and preheated to medium, until thick and richly � avored, about 30 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste and jalapeños, if desired.

SILVER WINGS

Summer has been very good to the Silver Wings. Starting at the GRIT BBQ, the Silver Wings have been represented at many parades and other events in Northern Alberta. The Silver Wings were proud to be among several Al Shamal units represented at the Lacombe parade where Al Azhar had challenged Al Shamal. The Silver Wings have already committed to returning to Lacombe in 2016 to help reclaim Al Shamal’s bragging rights.

The Silver Wings wish to thank Codey Toma who has become an integral member of the unit managing and maintaining the Silver Wings’ planes and coordinating moveouts. Codey has become such an important part of the unit that the Silver Wings have named him to serve in the newly created Lieutenant’s post.

The Silver Wings thank the Legion of Honour who have recently earmarked $5,000 to aid in the operations of the Silver Wings’ unit. The Silver Wings were proud to provide strong support to the Legion of Honour in their recent casino. The Silver Wings have limited access to fundraising dollars as they have not yet been granted a casino license; however, a new application for casino license is set to be � led in September.

The Silver Wings will once again host the Halloween Spooktacular on October 24th at the Shrine Centre. This family event is fun for all and is very affordable at $25/adult, $10/child, and FREE for children 5 and under. Tickets are available through the Shrine Centre.

Watch for details of the � rst ever poker tournament in March 2016. This tournament will be open to all Freemasons and supporters of the Craft and the Shrine. Details of this event are expected to be released in the next edition of the Sahida.

The Silver Wings are sad to hear of the passing of Recorder Noble Gary Willis. Gary was a strong supporter of the Silver Wings and will be deeply missed. The Silver Wings have donated $100 to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Gary’s honour and challenge the Divan and all other Al Shamal units to match this donation.

CLOWN REPORTIt has been a very busy Parade and move out season. We have had our Clowns covering as many as they have been able to commit to. Sometimes they go out as a group. Sometimes they go out by themselves. That’s the beauty of being a Clown, we are a highly mobile group that can team up or divide and conquer if that is what is needed to meet our obligations.

We had some clowns brave the elements and complete the K-day parade. There were an abundance of clowns at the Family day BBQ. That is one of the things that makes me the most proud of our members, no matter what the event is, there is usually an abundance of Clowns supporting the event. They may be in costume and makeup or they may be incognito wearing only their street clothes and blending in with the rest of the Shriners who are trying to make a difference. They may be harder to see but they are there.

We always have room for more Clowns, so if you have an inkling that you might want to join our dynamic group, talk to any one of us and we will be happy to tell you all about our unit.

Once again it is time to gear up for the PNSCA this year in Butte Montana. We are hoping to have a strong representation of clowns competing. Many of us are in the executive and are not able to represent our Temple in the competitions so we need the support from our members. It is a great clowning experience and equally as important, it is also a time of fellowship with Shriner’s from all around the Northwest of our Continent. Please plan to attend.

TLC CORPSThe parade season is here and the lights are � ashing and sirens are blaring in communities across the province as we perform our carefully choreographed routines and incredible manoeuvres with great skill! (The clear favourite routine is the one where no one crashes into another � re truck).

The TLC has had a number of things develop since our last update which we’d like to tell you about.

Noble Maurice Riopel has chosen to step down as TLC Chief for personal reasons. In his short tenure as Chief he implemented a number of changes which have improved the TLC greatly! Maurice – we thank you for your leadership while we had it! Maurice isn’t going anywhere though – you will see him and Lady Gustine at the parades with their unique � re truck prominently meandering through the streets.

The � re truck units of Nobles Bill L’Hirondelle and Maurice Riopel were put through their paces at the annual Patient Barbeque at the Shrine Centre on July 19. Kids, young and old always enjoy rides on a � re truck!

We would like to let everyone know that we are canceling the Oktoberfest this year. Thanks for your support and look for other fun and unique events from the TLC in the future!

As always, we invite Shriners to come out to our unit meetings, usually held on the 4th Saturday of the month at 10:30AM at the Yellowhead Casino. The next meetings are being scheduled for September and October. Come along and bring your lady if you’d like to see why the yellow-jackets have so much fun.

At the Alberta Beach parade on August 1st, one of the Greeters units had a mechanical malfunction. The TLC unit was there to lend a helping hand and give them a tow.......TLC TO THE RESCUE!!!

POP CAN TABSYUP...

I’m still collecting this little item, the lowly beverage can pull-tab, on behalf of our Shrine. And yup, it is a really s-l-o-w way to make money. But every nickel counts, right? (Note that I normally would have said every penny counts but that little item is now a thing of the past; we have to keep up with the times)

So how can you help? Just break the tabs off of your favourite beverage cans, save them up, and one day when you’re at the Al Shamal Shrine Centre, please drop them off at the of� ce. I pick them up there and accumulate the tabs until I get enough to justify a trip to a metal recycler.

Here’s a reminder about how many of these little buggers it takes to equal a dollar of pro� t:

About 1000 tabs yields one pound of metal. At the current price of $0.43 per pound, it takes about 2200 tabs to equal one dollar.

At that rate, you can see why I’m calling for your help.

It’s really encouraging to know some of you have put the word out to your family and friends resulting in help collecting tabs. Also, some of you come back from “the South” about this time of year and turn in your “private cache.” That’s great - much appreciated.

As I mentioned above, drop your tabs off at the Shrine of� ce.

2015 CIRCUS REPORTIt gives me great pleasure to provide you with a brief report on our 2015 Shrine Circus which was held at the Expo Center, Hall D on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Your committee this year did an outstanding job on putting together a great Circus. We had a great Circus Producer and excellent as always, great support from our Units, members and volunteers.

Unfortunately having given up our time normally in March, we were forced to host it in May which we � ght against the weather, sports tryouts for kids and other outdoor activities that take place during good weather. Therefore due to those issues our attendance was less than last year, however, we do have dates selected for 2016 in Mid April, with a chance to be advanced to the beginning of April.

Our marketing program this year was outstanding and we look to improve it again next year. Continue to be positive, work together as a uni� ed team and we will be successful in achieving our goals.

Again Thank You all very much for your hard work and support.

What is The Order of DeMolay?

It is an international organization for young men ages between 12-21. This organization helps develop moral character, and leadership skills while at the same time having a lot of fun in a safe environment.

Some of the past activities the boys have organized and participated in are:

• Rock Climbing• Tee Pee Camping• Canoeing • Laser Tag• Movie Night• Telus World Sleepover• Paint Balling• Winter Workshop and Fall Convention

Our next event for future prospects is a family picnic at Lake Wabamum Provincial Park. This will be on August 22 from 12 till 6. We would like to welcome anyone interested in joining this fantastic organization to come.

CHILD-LIFE WING AT SHRINERS BURN HOSPITAL FOCUSES ON HELPING PATIENTS, FAMILIES ADJUST TO TREATMENTS

GALVESTON - For patients at Shriners Burn Hospital for Children, the doors to the Child Life wing of the hospital open up to a safe place — a place where each one of them is in control.

“They get to make decisions for themselves,” said Heather Domenick, a child-life specialist. “We encourage self-directed play and let them decide what they want to do.”

Which, for children with injuries that can keep them in the hospital for weeks, months and even years as they receive various treatments and surgeries, that can be something that’s very welcomed, she said.

What 6-year-old Evelin Velazquez wanted to do Wednesday was play the board game Operation. Only this time, the operation was taking place on minions from Despicable Me.

Evelin, who has burns to her face, arms and hands, worked hard to remove a game piece from various parts of the minion. Though the buzzer would buzz and vibrate the board at times, she did not give up.

“She wanted to play this game today,” Domenick said. “She picked it herself.”

Walking into the Child Life wing, the walls are painted with bright colors of purple, turquoise and yellow. One side is devoted to teenage patients, while the other is geared toward younger children.

“We offer a lot of procedural supplements,” Domenick said.

One of those supplements is the playroom area, which is geared toward offering patients more normalized routines, she said.

Child-life specialists work at Shriners to help patients and families adjust to the entire health care experience.

“Our child life staff becomes an extension of our patients’ families,” spokesman Dustin Johnson said. “Every day, children going through extensive rehabilitation for burn injuries know that when they step into the child life department, they’ll be welcomed into a safe haven that serves as a home away from home throughout their hospital stay.”

Some of those practices are done by the use of developmentally supportive play activities and medical play to help patients and their families adjust, prepare for and undergo treatments and procedures.

Child life specialists also help patients and families transition from inpatient care to outpatient care, home care and returning to school, Domenick said.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, child life care is “an essential component of quality pediatric health care.”

Child life specialists typically work as members of the hospital’s interdisciplinary team, which may include physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, counselors, teachers and parents, according to Shriner’s website.

Domenick has been a child life specialist at Shriners for four years and has always known she wanted to work with kids.

“I knew I didn’t want to work in the traditional setting and teach — I wasn’t comfortable in a classroom,” she said.

But then she learned about being a child life specialist and knew she wanted to do that, but in a burn hospital.

“My dad used to coach pewee football and he had one of his players who was involved in an accident and treated at Shriners in Cincinnati,” Domenick said. “They talked about how child life specialists are who really helped them.”

At Shriners, child life specialists can be seen all over the hospital including in the pre-op room helping patients learn about their anesthesia masks, providing procedural support to patients having dif� culty coping with dressing changes or tissue expansion or meeting with siblings to prepare them for the � rst time they’ll see their sibling after the accident.

At Shriners in Galveston, where the hospital gets a good majority of its patients from Mexico, and lately China, Domenick works to also bridge those cultural gaps by celebrating holidays and events at the hospital they may not get to otherwise while away from home.

“One time we had � ve patients from China around the Chinese New Year,” Domenick said. “So we celebrated it. That was a � rst for me and a lot of people in the hospital.”

Child life specialists will also provide bereavement services to patient’s families, which can include making memory items such as scrapbooks and other things to help families remember and honor their loved one.

But child life specialists don’t just grieve the loss of a patient, she said. If a dog, cat or something else was lost when they sustained their injury, they’ll mourn that loss together, she said.

“We’ll also celebrate second birthdays,” Domenick said. “The second birthday being the day a patient sustained the burn and became a new person.”

Learning to accept is one of the biggest challenges child life specialists face.

“We’ll work on it together,” Domenick said. “Every step of the way.

ONE-HANDED PITCHER TAKES ON THE BOYSShe’s the only girl in her entire baseball league and at just 12 years old she can already throw a 75 mph fast ball. But those aren’t the only things that set Brittany Apgar apart. The pitcher is also missing part of her right arm. “I love the challenge of playing baseball. I enjoy trying to � gure out how to catch and hit quicker and better,” Brittany describes. 

Three years ago Brittany began coming to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville to get arms to help her play better. “I wanted to be able to swing the bat with both hands, instead of just one. I knew it would give me more power and make the ball go farther,” Brittany explains. Pediatric Orthotic Prosthetic Services, LLC, located inside the Greenville Shriners Hospital began experimenting and making

devices for Brittany to use. “My prosthetist, Crissy, would make me a device, I’d take it home and use it till it would break then mail it back to POPS. Crissy would � x it and make adjustments and then mail the device back to me.” All the hard work paid off and Brittany’s wish came true. “The � rst time I was at bat with the device, I hit what should’ve been a triple, but I was in such awe that I forgot to run! I was shocked at the power I had with two hands. I did start running and ended up just barely making it to � rst base!”

Recently Brittany beat out 120 boys from across the country to be named as one of the 10 players on the American Classic travel ball team. When asked if the boys accept her as part of the team, Brittany replies, “Most of them do, until I beat them. I mean it’s bad enough getting struck out by a girl, but a girl with one arm, man that’s embarrassing for them!”

TORONTO, Saturday, July 18, 2015 - 16-year-old Shriners Hospital for Children® – Canada patient Jeffrey Beausoleil wants to get the word out that you can do anything you set your mind to. So far this season, the teen with a prosthetic on his right foot and no right hand has completed three Spartan Races – with huge obstacles, mud and � re. He now plans to keep running races until he’s raised $10,000 for the hospital that’s been caring for him since he was � ve months old. “Ever since I was little, I have tried obstacles several times, convinced I can overcome them, despite being differently-abled,” Jeffrey says. “These Spartan Races are no different – just more challenging,” he admits. “Every race is exhausting, but it is really a question of putting yourself in the right mental space… if I can do it, anyone can.”

It’s this message: ‘obstacles can be overcome’ that Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Canada wants to highlight in its new partnership as a charity recipient with Spartan Race. The hospital is encouraging adults and children to follow Jeffrey and try the challenge of a Spartan Race.

DIRECTOR’S STAFF UNIT ON-THE GOThe Director’s Staff Unit under the able leadership of Director Dave Win� eld have been quite busy this year. Aside from the regular and active participation in all Dinner and Stated Meetings of the Shrine, the unit has attended all major events to date.

Noble Rick Beaumont has done a tremendous job as Move-out Coordinator and through his initiative, the DS Nobles were able to participate in various parades especially the K-Days extravaganza. It wasn’t the usual sunny day that morning but not even the rains could stop the crew. The Director aptly described it as “Wet and Wild….but

full of fun!”

Past Director Neil White, as usual took the helm in organizing the unit’s social functions. The latest of which was the Annual Barbecue, always held at Ranfurly, AB but this year being moved to Edmonton at the Shrine Centre. It wouldn’t have been as memorable without the presence of the dear widows and they truly

enjoyed every minute of it.

Noble Perry White, again spearheaded the Beef Jerky Drive and it was successful as expected. The unit also received commendation for being the � rst group to submit and � ll-up its Casino Team. The Shrine Ceremonial comes in next on the list of key events for the group to prepare. For this year, the Nobles have also given back to the community by supporting and donating to at least three local registered charities and of course, to the Shrine Hospital in Montreal.

The Director’s Staff resumes its regular meetings at Biff’s Lounge on September 2. They meet every First Wednesdays of the month. For those interested in becoming a member of this proud unit, you are most welcome….so do drop by.

“Thirty-two year old Melinda Kykosz of Chipman was hoping she’d be among those lucky Canadians to win one of the � ve wheelchair accessible vans being offered in a contest by the National Mobility Dealers Association during May’s “National Mobility Awareness Month.  She was not one of the winners. Gary Willis discussed the situation with Al Shamal President Larry Howard and the Al Shamal executive and  decision was made.

“While the Shriners and our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children primarily help children get well up to the age of 18,” said Al Shamal President Larry Howard, “There are always exceptions where we have assisted those who are older.  In the case of Melinda, she touched the hearts of all Shriners and we are delighted to provide her with this van. She is truly an inspiration to one and all, as is her grandfather, John Cooper.”

She received the   keys   to   the Al Shamal Shrine 2006 low mileage totally customized electronic wheelchair accessible van on Monday June 3rd, 2013.“

LETS NOT KEEP THE PHILANTHROPIC AL SHAMAL A SECRET!I think all members of Al Shamal, our Clubs and Units plus Daughters of The Nile and our Ladies Auxiliary are justi� ably proud of the great work we do.

But I think we inadvertently keep much of it a secret from the general public. Oh we had phenomenal publicity and a visit from Imperial Sir Bernie Lemieux when we established the � rst ever $3 million research fund in scoliosis at the University of Alberta – a joint venture between Al Shamal and the Alberta Government and the only one of its kind in North America.

Then we also established Operation Red Coat/Red Fez. . . a venture which saw Alberta RCMP search out children in rural isolated areas of the province who could bene� t from medical care provided by our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children. This not only spread across Canada, but was also adopted by the New York State Police and sheriff counties in Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee.

Our various Divans have also contributed signi� cantly over the years to the Canadian Shriners Hospital in Montreal, especially for the new Canadian Shriners Hospital which will open this summer.

But we rarely talk about the signi� cant sums our units have provided to various local charities and not for pro� t organizations over the years. In 2014 alone, Al Shamal and our units contributed $345,938 from the various unit gaming accounts.

Of that $345,938 donated, $117,638 went to the Al Shamal Patient Transportation Fund and $70,000 to the Canadian Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The remaining bene� ciaries were the University of Alberta $25,000; Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation $18,000; and Camp Health Hope & Happiness $15,000.

Four donations of $10,000 each went to the Cerebral Palsy Association of Alberta, Edmonton Rite to Learn Foundation, St. John Ambulance and Valour Place.

The E4C organization received $5,900 last year from the units of Al Shamal with $5,000 presented to each of the following: Bissell Centre, Edmonton Boys Pipe Band Foundation, Edmonton Community Foundation, Edmonton Public School Foundation, Good Neighbour Fund, Kids Kottage Foundation, Kids with Cancer Society and Little Warriors.

CKUA Radio Foundation received $3,700 last year from Al Shamal Units, with

$3,500 going to the Multiple Sclerosis of Canada Teen Escape Program, $3,000 to the Art Cycles Canada for Wishes, $2,200 to Alberta Demolay, and $2,000 to the Alberta Masonic Workshop.

If we were looking at individual units alone, the Arab Patrol unit (of which I’m a member) donated $115, 138 for the � ve year period from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014.

If all 14 Al Shamal units had similar � nancial statements for the last � ve years –- and keeping in mind the $345,938 that our units donated last year alone to various charities and non pro� t organizations --Al Shamal and its units likely have donated well over an estimated million dollars to local charities and non pro� t organizations over the last � ve years.

And, as I write this, I have no information from any of the clubs which surely would add to this incredible story.

Personally, I think it behooves all of us – especially our current Divan – to ensure this story is told to the general public of Edmonton, Northern and Central Alberta, who have bene� tted from our incredible generosity not only to Shriners Hospitals for Children but other notable charities and non pro� t organizations in the jurisdiction we serve.

Appreciating Monday, June 1 will be our last meeting prior to September, and also appreciating the number of parades we will be participating in this spring and summer, I think it behooves us to:

1. Get this story out to the urban and rural media immediately.

2. Launch ongoing speaking commitments throughout Edmonton and any Northern Alberta to service clubs, chambers of commerce, church groups, universities, colleges, unions, professional organizations and others.

3. Have each of our units provide pictures of themselves which can be emailed to daily and weekly newspapers, TV and cable operations, prior to their appearance at parades at designated cities and towns.

RED DEER SHRINE CLUBOn behalf of our President Noble Ken Wigmore and Lady Jo-Anne I would like to thank everyone that came out not only from Al Azhar but Al Shamal for the tremendous turn out at the Lacombe Days Parade. Due to business commitments I was late arriving but I did see the Shrine contingent and it went for three full blocks! I heard numerous comments from other spectators that they had never seen so many Shriners in their lives. Also, they were very aware of our purpose in caring for the children. In Addition, there were Job’s Daughters and Demolay.

Following the parade we retired to the fabulous backyard on the Wigmore acreage where there were about 60 Nobles and Ladies. The Wigmores served an awesome sliced beef on a bun, cold beverages and more. In addition, there were numerous pot luck dishes and desserts. The fellowship on this beautiful day in an ideal location was greatly appreciated. I am sure there were many plans being made for next year.

BATTLE RIVER SHRINE CLUB

Greetings Nobles,

The Battle River Shrine Club held their annual Steak and Lobster Picnic at the Fossen Farm again in June. In spite of having to move indoors to the Forestburg Lodge hall, (due to a heavy downpour which was really welcome), everyone had a great time. Thanks go out to or Divan Nobles Fred Susun and Ron Ryland for so ably tending our bar. Noble Mingo did a great job on the lobster pot in his yellow � shing gear and Ill. Sir Frado withstood the rain at the grille doing yeoman’s work. Many thanks!

We have had a busy parade season so far and will wrap it up with the Camrose Parade on Thursday, July 30 and Irma on Saturday, August 1st. The two giant Shriner teddy bears on our � oat are a big hit with the kids and parents alike. Our two outriding Nobles Larry Duncan and Ron Dempsey on their little tractors do an outstanding job handing out the Bully Book colouring books to the kids along the parade routes.

At the Hardisty parade, we had an opportunity to play the new Shiners song, “We Have A Dream” by George Dare. It really is a beautiful song. We play it while we are setting up, waiting in line or taking down so people can hear longer parts of it. It doesn’t quite work during the parade since 90% of the song doesn’t say we are the Shriners. The part that does is very powerful though.

Our next meeting is Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Ponoka Masonic Hall. Zem Zem at 6:00pm dinner at 7:00pm. The caterer promises another interesting Thai themed meal. If you would like to join us for a pleasant evening, bring your signi� cant other and join us there.

no trip to Supreme would be complete without a trip to “Shop ‘til you Drop.”

Congratulations to our Ladies Without Shriners who placed lst among the 11 Canadian Temples and 2nd among the 139 Temples for clipping and cutting Campbell Soup Labels for the Education Program, Spokane Hospital. Please continue to support the Campbell Labels for Education by saving your soup labels and dropping them off at the Shrine Centre.

NEWS FROM THE ORIENTAL GUIDEWell a half a year has passed as the Oriental Guide for the Al Shamal Temple. It has been a busy 7 months, representing the Divan at the many functions in Edmonton and area. Firstly, I would like to thank the Battle River Shrine Club for the � nancial support in helping me attend Oriental Guide Training in Tampa this past March. This was greatly appreciated and the training will de� nitely assist me in doing a better job for the Nobles of Al Shamal.

The summer has been eventful, with the parades, including the Klondike Parade (in pouring rain) and the Edson Toll Gate, as well as having the pleasure of throwing in the � rst pitch at the Edmonton Prospects game at the beginning of July.

Another responsibility of the Oriental Guide is to organize the Shrine Family picnic for the Nobles and their families in honour of the Shrine Hospital Patients from our area. I have to thank my wife in spearheading this event, by organizing, making lists and assisting me in the purchasing of all the supplies for July 19th at the Shrine Center. This event was a great success and I personally wish to “thank” all who helped in my absence by setting up tables and preparing ad cooking the food plus activities for the children, the entertainment by Clowns and rides for the kids by the TLC and � nally clean up. This is a fantastic event which promotes family participation. I look forward to next year’s picnic.

DID YOU KNOW?...RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad was a Shrine Patient

RJ is not only a Love to the Rescue® Ambassador for Shriners Hospitals for Children, he is also an award-winning actor best known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the AMC television series Breaking Bad. A former patient of our Shreveport location, RJ shares his message of accepting no limits to living with a disability through appearances on behalf of Shriners Hospitals.

Many regenerative projects are in the works at Shriners Hospitals for Children such as noses and full face transplants.

Patients don’t always visit the hospitals physically -- telemedicine can be done using a smart phone. A telemedicine clinic allows physicians, nurses and therapists see how a patient is progressing without the patient having to return to the hospital.

Shriners Hospitals for Children partnered with Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania in making history July 2015, when they performed the world’s � rst double hand transplant on a child. A team of over 40 people successfully transplanted donor hands and forearms onto 8-year-old Zion Harvey, who at the age of 2 underwent amputation of his hands and feet following a serious infection.

LADIES AUXILIARY The Annual Past Presidents' Luncheon was held on May 27th at the Highlands Golf and Country Club. Fifteen Past Presidents were in attendance and enjoyed a delicious lunch while reminiscing over many great memories.

The "garage sale" held in June was a huge success. Many thanks to all who donated and worked at it. With so many "good treasures" still available, a second garage sale will be held August 20th, 21st, and 22nd at 30 Malvern Drive, Sherwood Park.

2015 marks the 90th year of the Edmonton Ladies Auxiliary to Shriners Hospitals for Children - watch for celebration festivities planned for the Fall.

Being a Virtual Mentor is your opportunity to make the same difference in the life of a man on his way to becoming a Master Mason and Shriner. All it takes is willingness, enthusiasm and time.

As a Virtual Mentor, you will be paired with a Candidate with similar interests in your area. Communicating by phone, e-mail or in person, you’ll have the opportunity to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and about being a Shriner. You’ll answer questions or concerns, help � nd the right Lodge best suited to the Candidate’s interests, and help him with his journey to becoming a Shriner. You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

1. Commit to being active in the Virtual Mentor program for 1 year.

2. Explore the Candidates interests in our fraternity. Seek to understand his reasons for wanting to join, learn about his family, hobbies, interests and does he have any Masonic friends.

3. Educate the Candidate about local Lodges and about the nearest Shrine Centre.

4. Encourage the Candidate to visit local Lodges and the nearest Shrine Centre.

5. Meet the Candidates Lady and introduce her to local Brothers and Nobles.

6. Introduce the Candidate to local Brothers and Nobles.

7. Introduce the Candidate to the local Shrine Centre and members.

SOCCER JERSEY PROGRAM

It’s been 20 years since Ill. Sir Bob Dean and Noble Gordon Harris initiated the Soccer Jersey program. On seeing this program in action, after a visit to the US in 1995, Ill. Sir Bob Dean with the help of Noble Gordon Harris spearheaded this program for Northern Alberta.Yearly, an e-mail is sent to all Northern Alberta Masonic Lodges and Shrine Clubs requesting that they go out into their community in search of soccer teams in need of jerseys (at no charge to the team).Teams � ll out applications and they are submitted to the committee. All of these jerseys have the Shrine Logo on the front and the Masonic Logo on the sleeve with each player’s number on the back. Each team picks its own colour.

THE JEWEL OF THE ORDERJust like Mercedes-Benz is known for its three-pointed-star symbol, the Shriners fraternity is known for its Crescent, or “Jewel of the Order.” Carrying on the Near East theme, the emblem is composed of the claws of a tiger, united in the middle with the head of a sphinx. On the back of the emblem are a pyramid, urn and star. Additionally, the emblem bears the motto “Robur et Furor,” which means “Strength and Fury.” The Crescent hangs from a scimitar, while a � ve-pointed star dangles from the sphinx.

Just as Mercedes’ star represents something—domination of land, sea and air—so does the Shriners’ emblem. The scimitar stands for the backbone of the fraternity, its members. The two claws are for the Shriners fraternity and its philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children. The sphinx is representative of the governing body of the Shriners, while the star hanging beneath it represents the thousands of children helped by the philanthropy every year.

The planter boxes are about 16” high and 16” x 19”. They are vinyl lined and they are supplied ready for you to stain or paint to match your existing décor at $30.00 each.

IDEAL GIFTS FORFRIENDS AND FAMILY

To date, more than 200 free jerseys have been distributed throughout Northern Alberta. A member of the local Masonic Lodge usually presents the jerseys to the team.In return, all that is asked is that the teams attempt to get local news coverage as well as photos. They are also, asked to send in photos and information to the Shrine Temple.

Jerry Gantt Elected Imperial Potentate of Shriners International

Imperial Sir Jerry G. Gantt was elected Imperial Potentate, part of the 13-member body that helps govern the Shriners fraternity, during the Shriners’ 2015 Imperial Session – held in Houston July 5 - July 9. As Imperial Potentate, he is the highest-ranking Shriner in the world and serves as president of the Board of Directors of Shriners International, chairman of the Board of Directors of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

He is currently serving his 11th year as a member of the Board of Directors for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The experience of both growing up in a small town and being a long-time resident of Houston, the largest city in the southern U.S., and Texas, has given Gantt the ability to adjust to surroundings and situations, and be comfortable and confident wherever he is. This adaptability will help him effectively guide and lead our two organizations, given their worldwide presence.

Years of ServiceGantt was raised a Master Mason at Cherryville Lodge #505 in 1971. He is a member of the York Rite, Grotto and was honored with the 33rd Degree

of the Scottish Rite. He became a member of Oasis Shriners in Charlotte, N.C., in 1972, and joined Arabia Shriners in Houston in 1980, where he held numerous offices, including chairman of the Five-year Planning Committee. He served as the temple’s Potentate in 2002.

Gantt is a chairman emeritus of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston Board of Governors and has served at the Imperial level as Outer Guard Aide, Captain of the Guard Aide, Imperial Marshal Aide and member of the Imperial Dispensations and Charters Committee. During his years as a member of the Boards of Directors, he has served on a number of committees, including Budget, Building and Equipment, Information Systems, Public Relations, Salary, Personnel and Retirement, Planning, Corporate Compliance, Education Seminars, Sports, Research, Medical Affairs, Strategic Planning, Investments and Budget. In addition, he has served as Liaison Officer to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia, Houston, Cincinnati, Montreal, Tampa, Honolulu and Galveston. In addition to his service in the Shriners fraternity, Gantt is an honorary member of the DeMolay Legion of Honor.

Personal Details and PerspectivesBorn in Gastonia, N.C., Gantt attended Wingate College in Wingate, N.C. He then joined the United States Marine Corps., where he served as an air traffic controller. He is now President of Piedmont Contractors, Inc., a commercial general contracting firm in Houston.

At home, Gantt and his wife, Lisa, enjoy NASCAR and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where they are life-members and Gantt is an active committee member.

As Imperial Potentate, Gantt hopes to strengthen the relationship between headquarters’ staff, the Boards of Governors, the national Joint Boards and the temple Divans. “We need to do some team-building, and remember we are all on the same team,” he said.

To Gantt, his efforts on behalf of the fraternity and philanthropy are part of a much larger picture.

“Collectively – as Shriners – we make a difference in the lives of children every day – a much bigger difference than we could make individually,” said Gantt.

“I am content to be a small part of such a big endeavor.”

Imagine being a loving, devoted parent, but afraid to hug your child. Imagine being a child, and constantly being warned to “be careful; don’t play too hard.” Imagine always being aware that anything you might do – even just cough or sneeze – could break a bone.

For children and families living with osteogenesis imperfecta, these are daily realities.

UNDERSTANDING OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA (OI)In basic terms, the underlying cause of OI, also known as brittle bone disease, is a lack of collagen – or abnormal collagen – in the bones that prevents them from absorbing appropriate minerals and developing correctly. There are multiple types of OI – each with several symptoms and ranges of complexity and severity. In addition to the serious susceptibility to fractures, OI may cause below average height, early hearing loss, dental issues and additional orthopaedic di culties, including bowed arms or legs, flat feet and scoliosis. Many children with OI will have di culty walking.

For these children and their families everything – every activity, every choice, is measured against the threat of bone fracture, and other potential complications. The children and families coping with this debilitating disease will face it every day throughout their lives.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has a long history of developing and improving available treatments for OI, and there is now more hope for these children and families than ever before. Still, research takes time, and the treatments are quite costly.

Over time, First Lady Lisa Gantt has become increasingly aware of the impact of OI on children and families, and is determined to make a di�erence. Her program, In Dreams I Walk, will provide additional funds to support Shriners Hospitals for Children’s e�orts in the treatment and research of OI.

“We all want a world where children overcome, live their dreams, and walk into adulthood confident and secure. Let’s all help make that happen for children with OI,” said Lisa. “Join me in helping make the dreams of these children come true by supporting my program, In Dreams I Walk.”

SUPPORT THE FIRST LADY’S PROGRAMFirst Lady Lisa Gantt has asked that, as she makes her visits throughout the Imperial Year, donations be made to her fundraising program in lieu of presenting her with personal gifts. For a donation of $40, contributors will receive a bracelet with a bead fashioned as a shoe, representing her theme of In Dreams I Walk. A beautiful scarf can be purchased for $30, and an elegant gentleman’s tie can be obtained for a donation of $30. All three items are available for a total of $100.
