INTRODUCTION
Pavement structural tesng is required to ascertain
pavement strength and therefore performance. When a
heavy vehicle drives over a pavement it causes the
pavement to momentarily bend. This applies stresses and
strains within the pavement structure leading to surface
fague and / or subgrade deformaon.
A Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) simulates this by
non-destrucvely dropping a known load onto pavement
surface. When the load plate strikes the pavement it
produces a half-sine loading pulse. This pulse (commonly
known as a deflecon) is recorded by the sensors
posioned linearly from the plate, along the road.
Our survey is carried out in conformance with the
following standards:
• Austroads Test Methods
• NZTA Supplement Manuals.

JILS FWD
The JILS FWD loads the pavement using forces developed by the
arrest of a falling weight. The weight is raised to a pre-
determined height from which it is dropped onto a set of buffer
springs. The arrest of the falling weight produces a half-sine
loading pulse. The system includes an engine to provide all of
the hydraulic and electrical power required for operaon.
Applied Load & Load Cell
Our JILS Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) which has a
standard 300mm diameter load plate able to apply a load up to
120kN. The magnitude and duraon of the applied load are
funcons of three things, the weight dropped, the properes of
the buffer springs, and the height from which the weight falls.
The JILS FWD permits variaon of each of these three system
elements.
Deflecon Sensors
A set of up to eleven velocity transducers are used to measure
the displacement of the pavement in response to the applied
loading. These transducers are mounted in the “sensor boom”
and are posioned at set distances from the load cell. The
number of transducers and their spacing can be altered
according to contract requirement.
DGPS RECEIVER
This system ulises a high-end Trimble GPS receiver connected to the Omnistar network to collect sub-
meter and real-me DGPS co-ordinates naonwide.
HIGH ACCURACY DISTANCE RECORDING
Accurate distance measurement is crucial for locaon of structural data. Our system uses a robust Nu-
metrics Nitestar distance measuring unit that gives the operator the ability to accurately and reliably
posion the equipment.
DATA ACQUISITION SOFTWARE
The JILS FWD is a computer dependent system. The computer is used to control all of the operaons of the
system and to record the test results. The computer includes a display to provide the operator with
operang instrucons, control opons, and numerical and graphic test results. The computer board,
through a high-speed data acquision and control system interface controls, all system funcons. Signals to
and from this board are passed through a special JILS interface board.
