ASIATHE BOYS’ BRIGADE
GENERAL SECRETARY REPORT 2012
BB Asia has entered its tenth year of existence and we are encouraged to see the Lord’s hand in enabling us to achieve one milestone after another. Among the achievements were:
• The growth of membership, to eight (8th) countries from the original five (5) when we started in 2003. At the coming General Council Meeting, BB Philippines will be officially accepted as the ninth (9th) member country.
• The successful implementation of the previous three-year development plan, will helped us move forward to develop the next 3-year plan for 2013-2015 when the newly elected office bearers take over from January 1, 2013.
• The setting up of a secretariat with two full-time executive secretaries, one of whom, Mr Lawrence Tay resigned to pursue other interests in 2011.
• The successful implementation of the “BB Asia Circle” Facebook group, as a social media tool to bring BB members of different countries to communicate, fellowship and promote awareness of BB Asia’s work. Today, the BB Asia Circle Facebook has more than 4,000 fans, making it the largest Boys’ Brigade Facebook group in the world.
• An increase in mobilization of volunteers to help BB Asia conduct various training, notably in the Philippines where BB was recently set up in 2010 and in Indonesia.
• More individuals, institutions and corporate bodies coming forward to help us to fund some of the programmes in BB Asia as well as some of our member countries.
• For the first time, we successfully produced a full colour, printed BB Asia Annual Report for 2011-2012. 1000 copies have been printed and we hope that the report will create more awareness of the BB work in Asia region and more will come forward to support our mission. We thank especially to our two donors, Public Bank Ltd. (Malaysia) and EP International Pte. Ltd. (Malaysia) for their generous contribution in making the 2012 BB Asia Annual Report a reality.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we would thank God for guiding us to achieve some measure of success in all that we set out to do. The Lord certainly uses ordinary people within BB Asia to work His extraordinary plan. There is however still so much more to be done. Some of the goals defined under the three-year development plan remained unfulfilled and therefore we pray that the new BB Asia EXCO for 2013-2014 will chart out and implement the 3-year plan for 2013-2015.
There is also a need to convince the national leadership in each country to give more priority to regional extension. Though some funds have been raised more are needed to finance manpower and development needs. BB Asia will need to commit resources to review, develop and sharpen curriculum and instructional materials for use by the BB companies especially among our new member countries.
More needs to be done, especially in breaking new ground to bring the BB ministry to marginalized and disadvantaged children and youth. Thus, more funding support would be needed.

The history of The Boys’ Brigade in Brunei dates back to 19 July, 1964 which was started by Mr Charles A Keasbury at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, which is also currently the sponsor of the Company.
It is the only Company in the Sultanate and it is located in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city of Brunei. However, the second Company established in 1979 could not operate due to restrictions placed by the authorities.
Despite of the constant queries and having to operate in a challenging environment, the parents, members and officers have persevered to be Christ’s ambassadors in this Islamic state.
The enthusiasm shown by the BB members are encouraging while the officers’ faithfulness testifies their faith in Christ.
HighlightsWe ought to thank God that that we were still able to conduct cell group Bible studies and encourage our members to take up Bible correspondence courses as part of their Christian Education award achievement. Weekly BB parade varies from awards badge work to drill and games.
The members also had the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual outdoor company camp where they had island adventures, caves exploration, jungle trekking and rock climbing. Some members also participated in the Outward Bound course.
The annual NCO leadership training and workshop has been a regular feature and 2012 was no exception as the company focused on training young leaders for leadership roles and responsibilities in the Company.
We thank God for His encouragement for the Company as more parents became involved in encouraging their children to take part in the BB. Members were more interested to attend weekly parade activities and this resulted in an increase in weekly attendance at the BB parades.
We seek your prayer support for more schools to open their doors to us to conduct recruitment activities and our plan to purchase a piece of land for camping activities. Pray for us as we continue to remain steadfast in our faith like Daniel (Daniel 6:10-15) as we continue to engage with the government positively.

4 ANNUAL REPORT 2011- 2012
ASIATHE BOYS’ BRIGADE
Cambodia reflects the challenges faced by Christians in the country, but through God’s grace and untiring efforts of The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore, it is beginning to show growth.
The first seed was planted by some mission-minded BB Singapore personnel in 1994. However, the ministry was suspended in 1997 and again in 2000 due to political unrest in the country.
But BB Singapore did not give up. In 2001, it again sought to re-establish a presence in Cambodia. This saw BB Singapore sending teams to connect with the local Cambodian Christians.
In 2003, The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore set out to establish the BB Learning Centre in Prayut Village, Puok Commune, Puok District, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. It has classrooms, training shed, basic sanitation and accommodation facilities.
Registered under the name of “The Boys’ Brigade, Cambodia” as a Non-Governmental Organization, it has two full time Singaporean staff and five Cambodian staff.
At present, 150 students, between the ages of 8 and 20; attend English language classes regularly at the Learning Centre. In addition to English programmes, a structured BB programme has been incorporated to equip the youths not only in knowledge but also in character and life skills as well.
Our long-term goal is to partner with local schools to introduce the BB programme that will contribute to wholesome development of youths in Cambodia. Our plan is also to establish BB
Companies in Cambodia and lead the movement to a self-sufficiency level.
The effort finally bore fruit in 2011 when the Methodist Missionary Society and the 97th
Singapore Company of Bedok Methodist Church, Singapore, help initiate the formation of the 1st Phnom Penh Company in The Methodist School in Phnom Penh.
Highlights of 2012The 4th leadership training camp was held at Community Outreach Services-Immanuel Children’s Village (C.O.S.I.) at Beung Anchang Village, outside Phnom Penh.
This was the first time that the training was planned and executed by the local officers and NCOs.
Despite the outbreak of the virus EV 71 outbreak which forced the early closure of the school term and withdrawal of some Boys due to parental concerns, we managed to have 32 Boys to attend the 4 days 3 nights training on 27-30 July 2012.
The training focused on developing self-discipline and setting a good example as leaders among the young BB NCOs and Seniors.
Among the speakers at the training sessions were the Principal of Methodist, Ms. Violet; Pastor of Tuol Kork Methodist Church, Pastor Khamera (Acting Chaplain of 1st Phnom Penh Company); Captain Veasna, Officer Chamrong, BB Cambodia Country Coordinator, Mr. Sze Chuan, and Mr. Kong Chak Mun.

THE BOYS’ BRIGADEIN HONG KONG
The Boys’ Brigade Hong Kong continues to make significant strides in advancing its presence in Hong Kong. The hard work put in has paid off and this is evident with the increase of membership of 10% from the previous year in 2011. Sixteen new companies were formed in 2012. A new section called “Anchor Lamb” was set up to widen the scope of outreach to the community. The section caters for kindergarten children between 3 years old and 4 years old. More than 20 companies have established this section and 1000 children have been enrolled.
To add feathers to the cap, BB Hong Kong has also successfully established the first BB Company that comprises of children and youths with special needs. Today BB Hong Kong is not only a uniform unit. To meet the changing needs of the society, it has successfully set up a social service unit to provide social related services to the society.
HighlightsTerritory wide Flag Day on 21 April 2012The BB Hong Kong Flag day has been an annual affair for many years. On 21 April 2012, 11,000 BB volunteers were mobilized and HKD2.5 million was raised from the event to fund the new BB Hong Kong headquarters development. Founder’s Day Parade 28 October 2012A large BB gathering of the National level
Founder’s Day in a stadium was held on 28 October 2012. The guest of honour of the event was Mr Tsang Tak-sing, the Hong Kong Secretary of Home Affairs Proposed New Headquarters & Youth Development ComplexBB Hong Kong has started a signature campaign to solicit for support for its development of a new headquarters. The existing headquarters which is 35 years old is located on a ground floor in an old public high rise apartment. With only 3000 square feet space, it housed thirty full-time staff and cater for the used for administration, training and meeting purposes. The proposed new multi-purposed building will have an auditorium; sports complex; indoor family-based education centre; playground; dormitories; office and multi-purpose function rooms; band room and studios; library, study room, art room and dance studio; vehicle parking bays; cafeteria and souvenir shops
It is hope that with the success of the signature campaign, BB Hong Kong will get the support from the Hong Kong government to provide a piece of land and to cover cost of construction of the new headquarters and youth development complex.

THE BOYS’ BRIGADEIN INDONESIA
A country with the largest population in Asia after China, Indonesia is a country that holds much growth potential for the BB ministry. The opportunity to impact this nation with the Gospel is huge. It is currently the fastest growing BB nation in BB Asia after the Philippines.
The growth of BB membership over the last five years has been very encouraging. Nevertheless, there are still many Christian churches and Christian schools that have not heard of The Boys’ Brigade.
Currently, BB could be found in two most populated islands in Java and Sumatera. On May 2012, we went to Kalimantan, the third most populated island, situated in the island of Borneo to introduce the BB ministry in the Methodist Church in Pontianak. As of now, we have BB in major cities like Medan and Permatang Siantar on Sumatera; as well as Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Blora, Surabaya and Solo on Java island. There is only one full-time staff looking after the entire BB ministry in Indonesia. Funding remains the main issue to employ more staff to cope with the growth. Nevertheless, we are thankful with the teamwork shown by the BB volunteers.
The BB ministry remains promising despite of the resource limitation. BB Indonesia needs all the support they deserve and BB Asia is mobilizing more resources in terms of funding, volunteer manpower,
expertise, and training support in to this country to ensure that the growth momentum is sustained.
HighlightsThree new companies were formed in the cities of Jakarta, Solo and Surabaya this year. Although the depot has managed to improve the quality and quantity of uniform accessories, more funding is still needed to make more items available locally in order to save on foreign currency exchange. Handbooks and the Workbooks for Junior members were finally made available to members for the first time.
Leadership Development courses and officers training courses were also held throughout the year in most of the major cities in Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya and Medan. Promotional activities remained the focus in order to make known the BB ministry especially to churches, Christian schools and Christian organizations in Indonesia. One such presentation was at the International level South East Asia Windows 4-14 Conference that was held on October 4, 2012. There were participants from Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia and Thailand. Reported by Mr. Saud Tanahmassa, Executive Director, BB

THE BOYS’ BRIGADEIN MACAU
The Boys’ Brigade in Macau, set up on 27 February 1999, was initiated by The Boys’ Brigade, Hong Kong.
The BB Ministry faces a huge challenge as the focus in this society is on academic excellence at the expense of character building and teaching of values.
Work pressure and long working hours, the typical maladies of big cities, also hinder many to come forward to serve in the BB ministry.
Despite of the challenges, we thank God for those who responded to His calling to serve in the BB Ministry in Macau.
Events HighlightThis year has been a memorable year as we celebrate the 12th anniversary of the founding of BB in Macau and we thank God for His blessings and provisions for BB Macau.
The year started with a visit from the Executive Secretary of The Boys’ Brigade Asia, Mr. Francis Chiong on 7-8 February, 2012. His visit was made possible by 50th Hong Kong Company.
He visited the 1st , 2nd and 4th Companies of BB Macau and also encouraged us to participate in the BB activities held by some of the member BB countries in BB Asia.
On 29 April 2012, BB Macau held the “Officers’ Day 2012” which saw many officers from the Macau Companies attending. At the event, the Rector of Macau Bible Institute, Dr. Eric Yiu, accepted the appointment as consultant for BB Macau where his task is to help develop BB Macau.
On 3-6 June, three NCOs and one officer joined the BB Malaysia National “Pesta” Camp in Johor Bahru, Malaysia which was attended by more than 1,700 members.
Apart from having a great time at the camp, they also made many new BB friends from Malaysia, Indonesia, The Philippines and Singapore.
Two officers from The Boys’ Brigade Scotland visited us on 19 July, 2012. Their visit provided us an opportunity to know more about BB Scotland.
In July 2012, 10 NCOs joined the Advanced level and Basic level NCOs Training courses in Hong Kong which was organized by the East Kowloon District of BB. A month later, 80 BB Boys and Girls from Macau and Hong Kong had a fellowship camp in Panyu County in China.
On 21-23 September, 2012, officers of BB Macau attended the annual Officers Training Course organized by the Macau Bible Institute and BB Macau.
The highlight of the year was the National Parade of The Boys’ Brigade Macau, which was held at the Macau Baptist College on 14 October. The National Parade, to commemorate the founding of BB Macau, saw the attendance of 400 BB Boys and Girls, parents and invited guests from BB Hong Kong.
The inspecting officer was The Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Soo, JP, Honorary Vice-President of The Boys’ Brigade Hong Kong.

THE BOYS’ BRIGADEIN MALAYSIA
The Boys’ Brigade was introduced to Malaysia in 1946 by a British re-occupation soldier and a former BB Captain in England, Mr Robert Davis and Mr Geh Hun Kheng, a headmaster of Methodist Middle School.
Today, the BB is well accepted and recognized by churches and, public and private schools. The Malaysian government is appreciative the role played by The Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia in inculcating good values and developing good characters among the children and youths.
BB Malaysia also took a step further in complementing the country nation building effort by bringing the BB ministry to the poor and the indigenous group. Two indigenous companies were formed in the poor and remote villages in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia respectively. BB platoons were also started in a community home for the neglected, underprivileged and abused children in Sabah.
Sarawak BB is also currently working out plans to partner with local indigenous churches to start BB ministry in the state of Sarawak.
BB officers and NCOs from the existing BB companies were mobilized to assist the indigenous BB officers to run BB parade and activities on weekly basis. Christian individuals, BB companies
from overseas and church groups have also come forward to provide financial support to purchase materials such as BB uniform accessories, clothing, shoes, vitamin supplements, stationery and study materials which are lacking among the poor indigenous children and youths.
HighlightsBB Malaysia 65th AnniversaryThe anniversary celebration was held in Sibu, Sarawak in East Malaysia on April 16, 2012. Thirty-five members were baptised on April 17, 2012 at Masland Methodist Church, Sibu during the Sunday service cum anniversary thanksgiving service.
National “Pesta” Camp 2012The biennial camp was attended by 1740 campers in Johor state from June 2, 2012 to June 6, 2012. The camp featured the best of the best National level BB Companies finalist for Marching Brass Band, Drill, Group Singing and Street Dancing. Games, trips, praise and worship, morning devotion and fellowship activities were also held during the camp. There were more than 500 decisions during the 2-nights gospel rally. A large group of about 300 international participants from Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau and Philippines also joined the camp.

ASIATHE BOYS’ BRIGADE
Mr James Milner Fraser brought The Boys’ Brigade movement to Singapore in 1930. This saw the setting up of The 1st Singapore Company at the Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church on 12 January 1930.
Since then, the movement has expanded into schools and higher institutions of education.
BB Companies are based in primary and secondary schools, as well as in tertiary institutions including the polytechnic institutions.
Each Company is co-sponsored by the school and a Church. Most importantly, The BB is also integrated into the Ministry of Education Co-Curricular Activities in schools.
The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore’s objective is the holistic development of members in Spiritual, Physical, Enrichment and Social.
Over the years, there has been strong emphasis on outdoor adventure activities, leadership development, team building, and community involvement.
The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore has received strong support from the former President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan, who has been the Patron for the last 12 years.
In appreciation of Mr Nathan’s leadership over the past 12 years, we hosted a tea party at the BB Campus on 27 January.
Acknowledging the importance of BB, the current President Tony Tan Keng Yam has agreed to be the Patron.
On 10 February 2012, LG (Ret) Winston Choo Wee Leong was appointed as the Brigade’s third Honorary President at the Dedication Ceremony, which was presided over by our Brigade Chaplain Rev Malcolm Tan. LG (Ret) Choo is an old Boy of the BB from the 1st Singapore Company and he was accorded the ‘Queen’s Badge’ in 1958.
Meanwhile, the Juniors Programme Committee is being reviewed and is expected to be ready by 2013. The new curriculum will keep in tandem with the BB Integrated Awards Framework that runs through all its programmes and they are:
Leadership Personal Mastery Community Spiritedness Global Awareness
Under the new curriculum, the members will be asked to accomplish tasks to help them learn and understand. The use of the internet and selected social media tools would also be utilised to make lessons more interesting and current.
The Boys’ Brigade Share-a-Gift project enters its milestone year and celebrates its 25th Anniversary. The project provides food items, basic necessities and fulfils specific wishes to some 29,000 needy and disadvantaged in Singapore.
The project’s past accolades included winning the Singapore Youth Award (Team) and the TAYO (Ten Accomplished Youth Organisation) Award in 2010.

THE BOYS’ BRIGADEIN THAILAND
After the severe flood that hit Thailand in 2011 – the worst in 50 years - we are glad to see how God’s continuous grace and mercy have helped His people in this beautiful land to recover and continue His work in the BB Ministry.
In response to the massive flood that struck the central plains of Thailand, the BB Thailand Exco visited BB members and officers in the Pathum Thani province on 31 December, 2011.
They distributed more than 20 bags of groceries to the families as Christmas and New Year gifts. The Boys’ Brigade in Thailand also coordinated and participated in other post-flood relief work such as community Big Cleaning Day and free mobile clinic.
In the year 2012, The Boys’ Brigade in Thailand purchased a building to serve as its headquarters in the Pathum Thani province. The severe flood forced the postponement of the Dedication Service but with God’s grace, the service was finally held on 3 March, 2012.
The headquarters was officially opened by the Brigade President of BB Thailand and the Vice-President of BB Asia and this important event was witnessed by distinguished guests from Thailand and overseas. After the Headquarters Building Dedication Service, the headquarters was opened to members, officers and friends to visit.
On 26-29 March 2012, a total of 30 BB officers attended the BB Thailand Annual Officers Retreat at Sida Resort in the Nakhon Nayok province.
This annual event brought BB officers from various parts of the country to come together not only to sharpen their ministry skills but also to acknowledge that they depend on God to refresh their spirits to continue His work. A Dedication Service was also held on the last day of the retreat.
Meanwhile, during that year, the 2nd Bangkok Company (Bangkok Christian College) had its first exchange trip to Singapore from 12-16 April. During their stay in Singapore, the Boys visited the Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) where they had the opportunity to attend the classes and join 12th Singapore Company (BRJ & BR) parade. The Boys were also able to learn more about Singapore’s culture during a one-night home-stay with the families in Singapore.
On 16-19 Oct 2012, a total of 42 members attended a national Leadership Training School (LTS) at Mahachai Christian School in the Samut Sakhon province. The objective of this annual training was to equip BB members with important leadership skills such as training, communication, motivation, facilitation and relationship building through both theory and practical sessions.
11 ANNUAL REPORT 2011- 2012
ASIATHE BOYS’ BRIGADE
The work began on January 22, 2010 with the first BB orientation seminar held at Grace Christian College, Quezon City, Metro Manila. This led to more orientation seminars when news travelled to others who wanted to know more about the ministry. By the end of 2010, five new BB companies were formed.
A further ten more companies were formed in 2011 and by the end of 2011, BB Philippines has a total membership of 1500 Boys and Girls. The BB Philippines was officially registered with the government on May 4, 2012 taking on the name of “The Brigade, Philippines”. Application for full membership with The Boys’ Brigade Asia has been submitted to the Executive Committee and is expected to be approved at the meeting on December 29, 2012 in Hong Kong. The BB Philippines new Colours was dedicated on December 1, 2012 at the Commissioning & Dedication Service at Grace Christian College by the Brigade Philippines Chaplain, Bishop Reuben Abante.
One major milestones achieved since the inception was the partnership with a Christian NGO, The Center for Community Transformation to recruit five-hundred street and homeless Boys and Girls into the Brigade ministry. They were recruited in January 2011 and were officially enrolled as
members of the Brigade in April 2011. Lives were transformed and today we see a more discipline and purposeful life in them. The first batch of twenty Boys and Girls attended the Leadership Development Course Basic level (equivalent to NCOs Proficiency Star) in Taygaytay from August 27th to 28th , 2011.
In 2012, the Center for Community Transformation decided to adopt the BB ministry as one of their main vehicle to reach out to the children and youths in their centres throughout the Philippines. Two trainings were conducted on March 11, 2012 and July 2, 2012 to equip their officers to run the BB program in their respective centres throughout the country.
The ministry travel to the southern island when invitation was received in Mindanao. Thirty-seven participants from three Christian schools in Mindanao attended the two days training in Davao from May 25th to 26th , 2012.
As of today, the BB ministry is present in the island of Luzon and Mindanao with total membership of 2,500 Boys and Girls. Employment of one full-time staff will be the focus in 2013. We seek your continuous funding support and prayers for the ministry work in the Philippines that more souls will be won over to Jesus.

Projects Asia 2011-2012Project Asia’s objective is to highlight BB Asia Secretariat’s initiatives in facilitating and developing the BB ministry in Asia. We thank our volunteers who prayed for us and also gave us the encouragement and advice and also their efforts in the training and funding and providing vehicle transfers to remote locations. We thanked them in helping us in the copy writing, designing and helping us in moderating the BB Asia Circle Facebook.
Our volunteers also contributed their time and funded their own lodging, meals and transfer (land and air) to help complement the work of the BB Asia Secretariat. Some BB Asia EXCO members went beyond fulfilling their obligations to attend the BB Asia EXCO meetings. The long distances to some member countries were not a deterrent where they made several working visits and to conduct training in these nations.

STATISTICSREPORT
Membership growth of BB Asia over the last 7 years was on a steady growth path except in 2009, membership declined by 7%. BB Asia registered a modest membership increase of 5% per annum over an seven year period.
In 2012, BB Asia membership grew by 4% to 33,945 members from 29,253 in 2011. Hong Kong retains its status as the largest BB country in the region. Countries with strong growth potential are Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand due to large young population base. Thus, more resources should be committed to grow the membership base in these three countries in order to see significant membership growth in BB Asia.
