CHIPPINGS
Hi to all the NWCA members ! We are starting a new year in good form ! The meeting went really well on the 9th of January ! I want to thank everyone for coming and want to welcome the new mem-bers to the club ! There were guests also at the meeting and we welcome them to come back! The recipient for the Memorial Award is Robin McDonald, a beginner woodcarver. Congratulations are in order to her. Thank you Brian for telling the new club members about our extensive library in the cabinet . And thank you Brian for keeping it well organized . The chip carving video was really great and puts a new outlook on different aspects of wood carving Thank you Marlo for showing us this works ! I know its early but get ready for the picnic in July . And everyone keep your tools sharp. We are looking forward to seeing you at the February meeting. Don't forget to bring your tools and carve while the meeting is going on !
Your Pres….
Ronald Dyer
Our Librarian says “Come See Me”
Do you realize our library has more carving books & videos available than the public library (an unofficial observation) Do you know that only members may check out books? Do you know that there is no time limit on your checkout? Find a project, check out a how-to book and have some fun until the project
is done.
There is a complete list of all our books, thanks to the librarian Brian Hogan, on our website at

Some Sr. Center & Library Carving Class Schedules
There are some interesting pictures from the Columbia Flyway Show on this website. Hopefully I’ll soon be able to get our pictures posted there
also. http://www.worldofdecoys.com/carving-show-pictures.html
This is not a new subject as I’ve placed a link before about Livio di Marchi and his wood sculptures but I received a Power Point presentation with some new pieces I’ve not seen before. I tried to put it on here but the pdf won’t support it so that you can open it on your computer from here.. So you can read about his life and see his work at this website. Click on the small images for a larger view of some of his work. To those of you reading
this in your e-mail I will send you the PP presentation.
http://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/demarchi.htm . All of the carvings
in the Power Point Program are available on the website.
I haven’t had time to spend browsing this month so this is it for now. Send me your recommendations so everyone can enjoy (or learn from)
them.

MEMBERSHIP NWCA
It is our hope that by the end of February everyone has renewed their membership. Marlo will be having some more great programs for the coming year and you won’t want to miss them. I will try to have a new Directory out for March in a new format. It may not be so pretty but will be functional and much easier for whoever does Member-ship and the Directory each year. Only paid up members will be listed. Some of you have been members for years so don’t forget. (I know it’s easy to do). $25 family for the year pays for the newslet-ter, prospectus, the great programs, use of the vast lending library, and the op-portunity to have an enjoya-ble evening with your fellow carvers AND glean their minds for helpful hints on carving. There are always new learning occasions. And
always a delicious potluck.

Minutes General Mtg.
Our President Ron Dyer called the club to dinner at about 6:10. I have a tendency to over eat at the potluck dinners, because the food is always very
good.
Ron called the meeting to order at 7:05.
Ron asked for new members and guests to introduce themselves. New members are Stan, Sharon, McKenna and Zachary. New member Tony Thompson. New member Chris Kerber. New member Marie Blichfeldt. New
member Rick Blake. There were no guests.
Robin McDonald was picked to receive the NWCA Memorial award for a Beginner Carver of 2014 who showed the most interest in taking part in club activities. She is awarded 1 year free membership plus a carving tool of her
choice.
Marlo Thompson took the mic at 7:10. She talked about Al and Betty Mil-ler and of the service that they have done over the years. We will miss Al who
passed away January 2nd 2015.
Marlo then opened the program for the night, a film on Chip Carving, at
7:15.
Show and Tell was at 7:45. There were 7 people taking part: Jack Wilkins – Hill Billies, Bob Harkness - Hill Billy on his Mule, Alton Cuplin – Cane, Richard LaPlante – Santa, Kalona Crawford – Apple, Elk, Polar Bear, Larry Martin – Stellar Jay, Walt Bedell Woods birds and flowers assorted. The Raffle was at 8:10. Brian

In Memoriam
I would like to thank all of the wonderful woodcarvers and your friends who attended my husband’s, Al Miller, mili-tary services at Tahoma National Cemetery on Jan 8 for your caring and support. I was truly amazed at the turnout. You will never know how much that meant to us and how much it support-ed me and our family. Thank you from the bot-tom of my heart. God
bless you all.
With sincere apprecia-
tion,
Your editor, Betty Miller

The 5 Riddles... THE ANSWERS ARE AT THE BOTTOM. RIDDLE 5 IS AMAZING. IT SHARPENS THOSE GENES IN YOUR BRAIN AND STALLS ALZHEIMER'S FOR YEARS …. 1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him? - / - 2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be? - / - 3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and grey when you throw it away ? - / - 4. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday? - / - 5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is
highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd but if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching!
THE ANSWERS TO ALL FIVE THE RIDDLES ARE BELOW:
1. The third room Lions that haven't eaten in three years are dead. That one was easy, right?
2. The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband, developed it, and hung it up to dry
(shot; held under water; and hung).
3. Charcoal, as it is used in barbecuing.
4. Sure you can name three consecutive days, yesterday, today, and tomorrow!
5. The letter "e" which is the most common letter used in the English language, does not appear even once in the paragraph.
I’ll be getting Alzheimer’s any time now. How did you do?
