BREMAS switchgears and controlgears are designed, manufactured andtested in accordance with the requirements laid down in the mostimportant national and international specifications and standards.In most countries, the use of electrical devices is permitted if themanufacturer, upon his own responsibility, guarantees the conformity to therequirements. In other countries, the law lays down compulsory approvalprocedures.For better understanding of the subject, the information set out below dealswith REQUIREMENT, CONFORMITY, APPROVAL.
REQUIREMENTSThis refers to the definitions contained in a standard relating to normaloperating conditions, performance requirements, test procedures, etc.Requirements can be subdivided into:
Internationals requirements
These are the requirements issued by the following Authorities:
IEC International Electrotechnical CommissionThis international commission, with members from all themajor industrialised countries, issues recommendations thatare taken up as the basis of the single national standards.
CENELEC Comité Européen de Normalisation ElectrotechniqueThis committee issues the EN standards for the Europeancountries.
National RequirementsFor example, the requirements issued by the following Authorities:CEI Comitato Elettrotecnico Italiano, ItalyVDE Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker, GermanyNF Normes Françaises, FranceCSA Canadian Standards Association, CanadaUL Underwriter’s Laboratories, United States of America
CONFORMITYConformity to a standard consists of a declaration made by themanufacturer under his own responsibility to the effect that a specificproduct comply with all the requirements of the relevant standard.Recently, the CE Mark has been introduced, for which the manufacturerdeclares that the products comply with the EEC applicable Directives. Forthe electrical material the EEC applicable Directives are: LOW VOLTAGEDirective (72/23/EEC, modified to 93/68/EEC) for the safety of electricproducts and E.M.C. Directive (89/339/EEC, modified to 92/31/EEC and to93/68/EEC) and Electromagnetic Compatibility.
APPROVALIIn some countries, approval of electric materials is compulsory by law.This consists of a certificate of conformity with the requirements issued notby the manufacturer, but by an independent Testing Laboratory legallyrecognized. Each approved item has to carry the mark of approval, such asCSA or UL. For this last, two different levels of acceptance are required:
RECOGNIZED = The device should be marked with the letters UR only, andcan be used in electrical equipment only by qualified personnel who arefully aware of the limits of use of the product.The sale of this equipment for general use is not permitted.
LISTED = The device should be marked with the letters UL alongside themark of approval and can be fitted in electrical appliances or sold loose, asit complies with all the requirements in the relevant standard.
QUALITY MARKThis is a special form of approval adopted for equipment for household use.The best known Authorities are:IMQ Istituto Marchio di Qualità, ItalyKEMA-KEUR Keuring van Elektrotechnische Materialen,

Utilization categoryThe standards define a certain number of categories with regard to thenormal applications of contactors.Each category defines the current and the voltage values (expressed asmultiples of the rated values) that corresponds to the connection and theswitching of the load.
Operating cycleA succession of operations from one position to another and back to thefirst position through all other positions, if any.
Main circuitAll the conductive parts of a switching device included in the circuit whichit is designed to close or open
Control circuitAll the conductive parts (other than the main circuit) of a switching devicewhich are included in a circuit used for the closing operation or openingoperation, or both, of the device.
Auxiliary circuitAll the conductive parts of a switching device which are intended to beincluded in a circuit other than the main circuit and the control circuits ofthe device.
Rated operational current IeCurrent which takes into account the rated voltage, the rated frequency, therated duty, the utilization category.
Rated thermal current IthThe maximum current that a switching device can carry on eight-hour duty,without the temperature rise of its several parts exceeding the limitsspecified.
Short-time withstand currentThe current that a switching device can withstand in the closed positionduring a specified short time, under prescribed conditions of use andbehaviour.
Time constant or Power factorThe ratio between the inductance and resistance, that is L/R = mH/Ω=ms
ClearanceThe distance between two conductive parts, along a string stretched theshortest way between these conductive parts
Creepage distanceThe shortest distance along the surface of an insulating material betweentwo conductive parts.
Electrical durabilityIt is defined as the number of on-load operating cycles which will beattained or exceeded by 90% of all devices tested without repair orreplacement of any part.
Mechanical durabilityIt is defined as the number of no-load operating cycles which will beattained or exceeded by 90% of all devices tested without repair orreplacement of any part.
Pole impedanceThis is the complex resistance of a pole at rated current.
Breaking or making capacityA value of prospective breaking or making current that a switching deviceis capable of breaking or making at the stated voltage under prescribedcondition of use and behaviour.
Intermittent dutyA duty with on-load periods, in which the main contacts of the equipmentremain closed, having a definite relation to off-load periods, both periodsbeing short to allow the equipment to reach thermal equilibrium.
Intermittence ratio (I.R.) or operation factor (m)It represents the ratio between “t” duration of the current flow and “T” totaloperating cycle time, that is I.R. or m=t/T.Often this ratio is expressed as a percentage.For total operating cycle time, it is understood the time elapsing betweenthe beginning of two consecutive passings of current.
Opening timeThe interval of time between the specified instant of initiation of theopening operation and the instant when the arcing contacts have separatedin all poles.
Closing timeThe interval of time between the initiation of the closing operation and theinstant when the contacts touch in all poles.
Air ambient temperatureIt is the temperature, determined under prescribed conditions, of the airsurrounding the complete switching device.For devices installed inside an enclosure, it is the temperature of the airoutside the enclosure.
Rated operational voltage UeA value of voltage which, combined with a rated operational current,determines the application of the equipment and to which the elevant testsand the utilization categories are referred.
Rated insulation voltage UiThe value of voltage to which dielectric tests and creepage distances arereferred.

Utilization with alternating current
Power equipment , switchgear and controlgear according to EN 60947-4 and IEC 947-4 (contactors, equipment for starting of motors)
AC1 Connection or disconnection of non-inductive or slightly inductiveloads (e.g. resistance furnaces).This equipment should have a cos no less than 0,95
AC2 Starting, counter-current braking and switching off of slip-ringmotors.The contactor makes and breaks the starting current, which canreach 1,5 ÷ 3 times the rated current of the motor.
AC3 Starting and switching off of squirrel-cage motors during running.The contactor makes the starting current, which can reach 4 ÷ 8times the rated current of the motor, and breaks the rated currentabsorbed by the motor.The switching conditions are easy, as the voltage at the motorterminals is approximately 20 ÷ 30% of the supply voltage.
AC4 Starting, plugging and inching of squirrel-cage motors.The contactor makes and breaks the starting current, which canreach 4 ÷ 88 times the rated current of the motor.The switching conditions are severe, as the voltage at the motorterminals can be equal to that of the supply voltage.
AC5a Switching of electric discharge lamp controls.AC5b Switching of incandescent lamps.

When a disconnector, a contactor, a thermal overload relay, an automatic circuit breaker or a set of three fuses are chosen to realizes a plant, the problem oftheir mutual behaviour arises, that is to say their “co-ordination” on the basis of the electrical function carried out by each device.

They have not to trip in presence of a normal current overload.In order to avoid the fusion during the current peak which occursmotor starting, the fuse type gG will be chosen sized from 1,5 to 2,5 the full loadcurrent of the motor. Such fuse has therefore to carry for a relatively long time acurrent higher than the rated one and this may cause a thermal overloaddangerous for the motor. In order to assure an effective protection of the motor,it is recommended to couple the thermal overload relay with fuses type aM(motor accompanying) whose current is of the same order of size than thecurrent of themotor to be protected.
This device allow to insulate, in a total and sure way, all the conductors placedon the load side, before carrying out any intervention on the plant, following afailure or a need of maintenance.
