Incredible Years
The Incredible Years programmes were developed in Seattle in the 1980’s by Professor Caroline Webster Stratton.
The programmes are all research based. Dr Sue Evans has worked nationally and
more locally in Powys along side the CYPP to develop and role out all of the IY programmes.
Most IY courses within Powys are free.
Incredible Years at Ysgol Golwg Y Cwm and Penrhos
Primary• Initial Incredible Years training was undertaken in 2004
at Penrhos Primary.• There were difficulties to begin with in only having one
person trained.• Over the past 10 years both teaching an non teaching
staff have been trained.• We now find ourselves in a new school with IY fully
embedded within the setting. Incredible Years has had a positive impact on young people, parents and staff at the school
Incredible Years Investment
• This ‘Piggy Bank’ poster highlights how teachers and parents who use the Incredible Years principles are investing in their children by playing with them, coaching social and emotional skills, and praising and encouraging their child’s efforts.
• The fundamental purpose of the Piggy Bank poster is to demonstrate the concept that when teachers and parents invest in their relationship with their children by playing and caring for them, they have a bank account they can draw on when times become more difficult and they need to impose a consequence.
• Moreover, this investment in their relationship is a long-term investment in their child’s emotional and social development.

School Readiness
This programme is undertaken twice a year once in the Autumn Term for the September and January nursery intake, and again in March for the final nursery intake.
Staff within school have undertaken the IY School Readiness training. This element of IY is sustainable and is partially funded by PDG and Powys Family Learning partnership.
The SR courses undertaken last year were reasonably attended and 12 families accessed the courses. Recruitment is by far the most difficult part and a lot of badgering and persuasion is necessary to engage the hard to reach families.
Working together
IY Parenting Programme
Numerous IY Parenting courses are available throughout the year in the Ystradgynlais area, they range from baby programmes, toddler programmes, school age programmes and do move on to teenage programmes.
Parents also have opportunities to work thorough these programmes on a one to one with Action for Children workers.
Being a community focussed school we are fortunate to work alongside external agencies. As a school we are able to sign post parents who are struggling in one way or another with challenging behaviour to external bodies who engage with them and undertake IY Parenting.
Numerous families have undertaken these programmes and have found them beneficial for their families.
Teacher Classroom Management
All Foundation Phase + Year 3 teaching and non teaching staff are trained in TCM.
Staff within school are trained to deliver TCM. This year teachers in Years 3,4,5 and 6 will be trained in TCM. Staff members are to undertake trainer training 2014/2015 Strong leadership and belief in the programme from the Head teacher is a
must. It is vitally important that IY becomes a whole school approach and that the
head teacher leads the way. Around 40 members of staff from the Brecon and Ystradgynlais cluster have
undertaken the Teacher Classroom Management training during the last two years. Some of these staff have also gone on to do the Dina School Training and have also trained to become trainers.
TCM is a great way to upskill all Teaching and Non teaching staff so that a common approach is taken when dealing with all pupils and more so to provide staff with additional tools to use when challenging situations arise.

Incredible Years Courses
A list of available Incredible Years courses for 2014/ 2015 is available from Bianca Longhorn, based at Gwalia, Llandrindod Wells.
Powys school are at an advantage as many of the IY courses are available free of charge, school have to fund supply cover. This is something that GYC has used its PDG for.
Take the plunge
Incredible years is by no means a quick fix for pupils with challenging behaviour. However when all the programme elements are used together over a period of time, they can have profound and positive effects upon children, families and schools.
