shear strain
height h = constant. Volume = constant
Strain is a dimensionless quantity

[1/s]unit
displacement of the upper surface

another expressionfor the strain rate
vw = 1 [mm/s]
h = 1 [cm] γ =
vwh
=1 [mm/s]1 [cm]
=1 [mm/s]10 [mm]
∴ γ = 0.1 [1 / s]
h
γ = γ t = 0.1 [1/s]( ) × 5 [s]( ) = 0.5
x = vwt = 5 [mm]

vw = vx (h) = aha = vw
h= !γ
∴vx (y) = !γ y

Hookean Solid (ideal solid)and
Newtonian Fluid (ideal fluid)
Ideal solid (Hookean solid)
σ (t) = Gγ (t)
shear modulus
In the ideal solid, stress σ(t) at time t is proportional to the strain γ(t) at the same time t, and does not depend on the strain rate or the past strain.
unit of modulus = unit of stress = [Pa]
Ideal fluid (Newtonian fluid)
In the ideal fluid, stress σ(t) at time t is proportional to the strain rate at the same time t, and does not depend on the strain or the past strain rate.

[Pa s]unit of viscosity = [Pa s]

Apply step strain γ0 at t=0, and keep the strain constant.
Observed stress decays gradually with time.
When γ0 is sufficiently small,if γ0 à 2γ0 then σ(t) à 2σ(t) at all t.

G(t) ≡ σ (t)γ 0
When γ0 is sufficiently small,if γ0 à 2γ0 then σ(t) à 2σ(t) at all t.
σ (t)γ 0
