“….has given me the chance to actually live out the things that are talked about in class….Spending time with Lynn….gave me the opportunity to ask her questions about the grapes and her winemaking style….she would always show me examples of bad grapes and explain why she didn’t want them in the

wine.” Robert Temple, Penner-Ash Wine Cellar

“I have been able to utilize the tools I learned in Wine Business classes by creating marketing materials and applying the fundamental practices for dealing with Direct To Consumer sales and the methods in which payments and fees are handled….Through these projects I developed computer and research skills, and an understanding of terminology and procedural formats that made the work experience that much more

valuable and capable.” Kyle Strubelat, Remy Wines

“This work experience ties in perfectly with the winemaking courses I took at Chemeketa. I have a much greater understanding of the numbers game as it relates to winemaking. Target pH, acidity, sugar and alcohol numbers mean a lot more to me now!”

Jocelyn Graham, Anderson Family Vineyard

"This internship was a good way to tie things that I have learned scholastically to a practical application. Bryan took a lot of time to answer my never ending questions and happily explained Firesteed’s operation. I am proud of the work I was asked to do and

accomplished….” Patrick Hare, Firesteed

“….When I walked into my job….I was nervous I didn't know enough or that I wasn't strong enough. I had so much support from my Site Supervisor while at the same time being challenged to master skills. I feel honored to have been asked to remain part of the

LaVelle Team!” Sarah Tunnell, LaVelle Vineyards

“….the best experience I’ve ever had….really motivated me to finish my degree…. I feel so much more confident using my learned skills in the real-life work force!” Christina Snegerivat, Willamette Valley

Vineyards

“The experience….was essential for me to fully become the winemaker I want to be….This position has exposed me to new technology and practices….The responsibility I was given was the best learning

opportunity!” Mathieu Delarbreat, A to Z Wineworks

Agricultural Sciences Department Newsletter and Class Schedule Spring 2016

Shear Kindness A surprising and unexpected gift for Chemeketa’s horticulture program: 30 sets of brand

new pruning shears, with custom-made leather belt sheaths to hold them in. A corporal

and captain from the Oregon Department of Corrections delivered the gift on behalf of its

giver, an Oregon State Penitentiary inmate, Shawn Fox. Fox was motivated to make the

donation after reading a Statesman Journal article on the Marion-Polk Food Share’s

Youth Farm moving to a six-acre location on Chemeketa’s Salem campus. Fox works in the prison’s hobby shop as a

leather worker, along with tending to the prison’s inmate garden. Fox approached Cpl. Brian Danielson about providing

the gift to the program. It was ultimately approved by OSP’s superintendent, Jeff Premo. OSP staff purchased the shears,

while Fox himself covered the cost of the leather to make the sheaths.
