When students or young architects ask my advice on their professional development, I tell them the single most important thing they can do is to read
Business Publications.

Scientific Literacy
The architects’ lack of knowledge in science- particularly in the engineering and environmental area- is forcing usto abdicate to specialists or to design without sufficient
thought to the natural forces that shape a project.

Language Deficiency
If we can’t express ourselves - if we can’t write meeting notes explaining our design intent, if we can’t make a forceful public
presentation- we are losing an opportunity to be viewed as experts.

Aside from being very marketable commodities, these individuals will have
the flexibility and the knowledgeto respond to the challenges of working overseas,
to changes in economic and social conditions, and to shifts of focus between building types.

We must educate Renaissance men and women who are capable of taking a leadership role
in the design and construction industry, as well as in society at large.

If we do that, the architectural profession
will once again return to its position of pre-eminence.
If we do that, the profession will have leaders,individuals who
can go beyond their narrow frame of reference to make real contributions
to society at large.
