Topology Optimization of Repetitive Structures page - i

Abstract
This work extends the classical topology optimization method based on the homogenization
approach, to problems of structures subjected to transmissible loads and to periodical
structures. For the latter, a new efficient method for finite element analysis of periodical
structures is presented based on the method of the representative cell.
In the first part of this work we will use transmissible loads in topological optimization.
Classical topology design enables us to find the optimal structural layout in the design
region when only the forces and displacements are pre-defined. In the optimal structure
one often notices a marked difference between the main bearing structure and the load
transfer zones. The latter are composed of relatively light elements, the exact nature of
which is not very distinct. The main advantage of using transmissible loads is to allow the
main bearing part of the structure to emerge. Moreover, in many cases the location point
of the external load on its line of action is not fixed. We will show that in these cases the
condition that the load is transmissible can be converted to a condition of equal translation
along the force’s line of action. It also enables us to produce the load bearing structural
zones only without the secondary load transfer zones. The method is illustrated by typical
examples of two and three-dimensional structures. It is observed that this numerical
method produces indeed crisp images of the main structural components unblurred by the
secondary load transfer elements. It is also indicated that many results are often replicas of
Prager structures, which were previously obtained by analytical methods
In addition we will present a numerical method for the topology optimization and finite
element analysis of periodic structures under arbitrary static loads. The analysis and design
are defined on a single repetitive module. The analysis is reduced to a single cell by the
representative cell method that uses the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to transform the
original problem to a boundary value problem defined on a single module, the
representative cell. This cell is meshed into dense finite elements and solved by the finite
element method in the transformed plane. Using the inverse DFT the real translations of
the periodic structure are obtained. This technique is combined with the topology
optimization of spatial periodical structures, under arbitrary loading. The method is
illustrated by typical examples of periodic structures with one and two-dimensional
translational symmetry, rotational symmetry, finite modular structures and floating
periodic structures under auto-equilibrated loads.
