ZUNO President Liseli Sitali has

urged health professionals in Zambia to take an interest in the upcoming referendum as the bill of rights borders around not only their welfare as citizens but also as workers.

Mr Sitali has advised health professionals to vote “YES” on August 11, 2016 to the referendum question “Do you agree to the amendment to the Constitution to enhance the Bill of rights contained in Part III of the Constitution of Zambia and to repeal and replace Article 79 of the Constitution of Zambia?”

The ZUNO President noted that some of the rights that are being proposed in the bill of rights which include the economic, social and cultural rights are fundamental to the development of the nation.

The National referendum will be held alongside the Presidential and General elections on 11 August 2016.

The Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) has

reiterated the need for a united and strengthened labour

union in the country so as to push the agenda of the

Zambian workers forward.

Speaking during the opening of the ZUNO National

Executive Committee (NEC) orientation workshop held

individual labour unions are strong.

Among the issues deliberated on during the NEC

meeting were, the amended 2015 ZUNO Constitution,

policies and procedures, resource mobilisation and

financial management and membership recruitment,

organising and retention.

And on 13 July 2016 ZUNO held the National Council

The “Safer Surgery Saves Lives” program is aimed at promoting safer surgery and focuses on the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist which identifies steps of an operation, each corresponding to a specific period in the normal flow of work.

Central Provincial Medical Officer, Dr. Rosemary Mwanza officially launched the project emphasising on the importance of communication and teamwork during surgery, elements the Safer Surgery Project intends to enhance.

She further noted that Surgical Care has been an essential component of health care worldwide and that the impact of surgical intervention on public health systems is growing.

RCN International advisor Ms. Ilona Johnston noted the positives demonstrated by the project at University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka where the program was first piloted.

The objective of the program is to shape policy and practice related to operating theatres, work co-operatively with the Zambia Operating Theatre Nursing Interest Group, other professional associations and hospital management.

At the end of the project a decision would be made as to whether it should be rolled out to the rest of the country.
