Clouds—What Are They?

Before we get into pictures of clouds, we’ll discuss what clouds are. Do you know what a cloud is?

Clouds are an important part of earth’s weather. They hold the water that falls to earth’s surface as precipitation—rain, snow, hail, sleet. They help all forms of life—plants, people, animals, etc.. But, they can sometimes be dangerous and destructive like big hailstones, tornadoes, or even hurricanes.

o Basically, clouds are masses of either tiny water droplets or ice crystals. They are formed when they evaporate, or turn to a gas, from rivers, lakes, oceans, moist soil, or even plants! They can look like all types of things—gray/black sheets or white and fleecy blankets!

o Most clouds move and change shape frequently. They change as parts of them evaporate in dryer air or they are moved and reshaped by the wind.

I took this at around 1:15 PM on Sunday, December 9. I think there are a couple of

clouds: a stratus, altocumulus, and

cumulus. I think it sort of looks like a

piece of land with a [white] rainbow

coming out of it. What do you see?

NIGHTTIME CLOUDS

Page 6: Zos Cloud Watching Project Mr. Barbers Class 5 th grade PB Works Assignment.

This is at my house on December 10. It was 5:38 PM when I took this picture. It may be a little hard to see, but there are some cumulonimbus clouds filling up the sky and the darker cloud is I believe nimbostratus. If you look, they are the dark shapes next to my house. It looks pretty normal to me.

These are some stratus clouds. They

were taken on December 19 at 5:37. We missed the

sunset. We were by the

NASCAR Hall of Fame!
