ounded in 1979 by Carol Triffle and Jerry Mouawad, Imago Theatre’s original productions have toured internationally for over

three decades. Imago’s signature works have appeared thrice at the acclaimed New Victory Theatre on Broadway in New York: FROGZ (2000, 2002) and ZooZoo (2010). The universal nature of Imago’s world has won audience and critical acclaim in tours across Asia, Europe, Canada and the U.S. The company was awarded the New York Dance Film Award and “Best Touring Production” by Independent Reviewers of New England. Imago has been hailed by critics worldwide for their range of original work. Working out of a large 18,000-square-foot theatre laboratory in Portland, Oregon, Imago’s ensemble of actors, dancers, designers, fabricators and musicians become alchemists seeking fresh perspectives of performance. The company has been honored for mask theatre pieces that appeal to a wide age range, as well as for innovative works that push the boundaries of form, design and story. Imago Theatre’s methodology is based on the teachings of Jacques Lecoq (1921–1999). Ms. Triffle studied extensively with Mr. Lecoq, completing his exclusive pedagogical program. Drawing inspiration from Mr. Lecoq, Imago Theatre aims to place form and design at the forefront of theatre creation and infuses each production with an idiosyncratic physical energy. In 2006, the company’s innovative production of Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit ran at two Tony Award-winning theatres—American Repertory Theater and The Hartford Stage Company. The United States premiere of Caryl Churchill’s A Number was produced by Imago Theatre in 2003. In 2012, the company produced the English language premiere of Yukio Mishima’s The Black Lizard.

CAROL TRIFFLE(Co-Creator)Carol completed a third year pedagogical program with Jacques Lecoq in 1997 after studying with him for two previous years in 1986-1988. A member of the dance company The Company We Keep, she founded Imago Theatre in 1979 with Jerry Mouawad and began touring the United States with original mask theatre. In 1997, she wrote and directed Ginger’s Green, which marked the beginning of a canon of original music-theatre works that includes Ajax, Oh Lost Weekend, No Can Do, and Missing Mona. In 2006, her music-theatre works changed form after influences from Richard Maxwell, and often featured anti-clown heroes played by Danielle Vermette and Jerry Mouawad in works titled Hit Me in The Stomach, Mix Up, The Dinner, Simple People, Backs Like That and Splat. She co-directed with Mouawad on Broadway FROGZ and ZooZoo. Carol has staged works for The Jefferson Dancers and The Oregon Symphony. Her acting appearances in Mouawad’s original plays include Dead End Ed, Samuel’s Major Problems, Serial Killer Parents, Apis, Tick Tack Type, Stage Left Lost and Zugzwang. Awards include Best Touring Production by the Independent Reviewers of New England, Oregon Arts Commission Fellowship, New York Dance Film Awards, and Portland Theatre awards for choreography, costume design, and best original play.

JERRY MOUAWAD(Co-Creator)Jerry studied the teachings of Jacques Lecoq at the Hayes-Marshall School of Theatre Arts. After co-founding Imago Theatre in 1979 with Carol Triffle, he went on to collaborate with her for 14 years creating mask pieces before exploring experimental theatre. He staged two works by Richard Foreman: Samuel’s Major Problems and Symphony of Rats. He has adapted magical realism literature for the stage, incorporating multimedia, puppetry and stage illusion in Verdad (in collaboration with Triffle) and Half Light. Modern classic adaptations include Blood Wedding, The Imaginary Invalid, Exit the King, Uncle Vanya and The Black Lizard. His adaptation of Sartre’s No Exit on a moving stage played at American Repertory Theater and

Hartford Stage Company. He has staged work for BodyVox, The Portland Opera and The Oregon Symphony. The United States premiere of Caryl Churchill’s A Number was directed by Jerry at Imago Theatre. His series of original silent works entitled “Opera Beyond Words” includes Apis, or the Taste of Honey; The Cuban Missile Crisis; Tick Tack Type; Stage Left Lost and Zugzwang. On Broadway, he co-directed with Triffle FROGZ (2000, 2002) and ZooZoo (2010). He has appeared as actor in Triffle’s original works Ajax, Ginger’s Green, Oh Lost Weekend, Missing Mona, The Dinner, Simple People, Backs Like That and Splat. Awards include Oregon Arts Commission Fellowship, Portland Theater Guild Fellowship, Best Director by the Independent Reviewers of New England, the New York Dance Film Award, and Portland Theatre awards for acting, light design, choreography, and best original play.

KATIE GRIESAR(Original Music)Katie makes music with guitar, antique and toy musical instruments, found objects, collected sounds, awkward gestures, wrong notes, and other damaged goods. A graduate of Vassar College and the American Repertory Theater Institute at Harvard University, she is a three-time Portland Drama Critics Circle Award winner for her music/sound work with Imago Theatre, where she is currently Resident Composer. Her work with Imago Theatre spans some 20 shows and includes the original music scores for FROGZ, Biglittlethings, and this year’s ZooZoo. She has also contributed original music/sound to works by choreographers Linda Austin, Catherine Egan, Mary Oslund, Cydney Wilkes, filmmaker James Westby, Mona Huneidi’s stop motion animation film Katching and is a founding member of Hopeless Theatre.

JEFF FORBES(Light Design)Jeff is a Portland-based lighting designer working primarily in theatre and dance. He is a nine-time winner of the Willie and Drammy Awards for theatre for such companies as Artists Repertory Theatre, Imago Theatre, the Musical Theatre Company, Storefront Theatre, and Tygres Heart Shakespeare Co. Jeff

has designed for American Repertory Theater (Cambridge, Mass.), the New Rose Theatre, Portland Repertory Theatre, Portland Center Stage, Portland Actors Conservatory, and many others. He tours nationally and internationally with Imago Theatre, the Deborah Hay Dance Company and Antony and the Johnsons. His work in dance and performance includes frequent collaborations with choreographers such as Linda Austin, Tahni Holt, Linda K. Johnson, Northwest Dance Project, Josie Moseley, Mary Oslund, Sally Silvers, and Cydney Wilkes. Jeff is currently the Technical Manager for White Bird Dance, a presenting organization based in Portland, and has served as a technical director for PICA’s TBA Festival since its beginning in 2003. He is a co-founder, with Linda Austin, of Performance Works NorthWest, for which he also serves as technical director.

JONATHAN GODSEY(Performer)Jonathan works very hard at not working. He is currently hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, but you can find his acting double touring with Imago for their 2015/16 season. Jonathan has performed and directed for Imago for many years in such noted places around the world as Cairo, Amman, France, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Canada, The Big Apple and, of course, Osh Kosh, WI. With any luck he will return from the wild and replace his double on stage this December.

PRATIK MOTWANI(Performer)Pratik is an actor originally from Mumbai, India. He holds an MFA in ensemble-based physical theatre from the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake, CA. As a voiceover artist, Pratik has lent his voice to Dev Patel (the protagonist) in the Indian version of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Pratik is also the Co-Founder of MadBall Co, based in Mumbai, India. MadBall is a pioneer in introducing the Italian mask form of Commedia Dell’Arte to the Indian audience. In 2010, Pratik’s self-produced/co-created camping clown conservation comedy IN’Tents reached thousands of street children, pediatric cancer patients, students and art educators across Mumbai and Delhi. In 2012, in collaboration with

the National and State Park system, the show reached thousands of camping families from the Redwoods to the Rocky Mountains. In 2013, IN’Tents was invited to perform at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Green Show. This year, IN’Tents was chosen by the US Embassy in Cairo to represent the United States at the 2015 Hakawy International Arts Festival, Cairo, Egypt. Pratik’s second self-production, GOLOCONDA, an environmental black comedy exploring themes of global warming, water crisis, cannibalism, desolation and hope, hits the US and Canadian Fringe Festivals in 2016. As an actor, Pratik has played leading roles in The Dell’Arte Company’s production of The Nutcaper, The Comedy of Errors, and their recent production Mary Jane:The Musical. After a fantastic international tour-hopping experience as a FROG last year, this year Pratik is looking forward to performing as a feisty cat and a lazy hippo in Imago’s ZooZoo.

KAICIAN JADE KITKO(Performer)Kaician is a performer from the island of Kauai. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Kaician began performing for Imago Theatre in the 2010 production Stage Left Lost. He has since performed in three seasons of Imago’s school show Bim Bam Bop and toured internationally with Imago’s production of FROGZ during the 2014/2015 season. When not touring, Kaician spreads his time between Trip the Dark Dance Company (company member), Red Yarn Puppet Productions (occasional puppeteer), and creating/performing his own original material (mask theatre, tap dance, other). This is his first season performing ZooZoo.

MARK MULLANEY(Performer)Mark has had a joyous time learning ZooZoo and working with a familiar and chummy cast. Previously, he toured with Imago’s FROGZ and was seen in the recent Soiree as that crazy guy with the microphone. In addition to acting, he likes to play and teach the bagpipes to kids, and chase down cell phone thieves in downtown Portland. Generous thanks to Jerry and Carol for all the support, and to Pratik: thanks for getting the coffee yesterday.

CHRIS BALO(Production Stage Manager)Chris pleased to be returning to Imago Theatre on tour. Chris spends time working with BodyVox Dance, White Bird Dance, Portland State University, PICA, Oregon Children’s Theatre, Lakewood Theatre Company, IATSE Local 28 and several others in a variety of capacities from audio/video to stage management to scenic carpentry to production electrician & lighting design. As the world gets busier, crazier and more time-consuming, we want to thank you for taking the unique ride with us that is Imago Theatre.

Whether you attended our recent soiree of eclectic works, came to the creature-happy FROGZ, enjoyed one of the three provocative Harold Pinter works that twisted your brain and gut, or plan to see the hyper-creature production ZooZoo

this December, we are very glad you came with us.

The last two and a half years, most of our time has been spent writing, designing and building our next big show—La Belle, The Lost World of the Automaton. We also wandered off the beaten path to create original and classic plays. Our journey continues as we finish the final touches to La Belle, our own unusual and quaint take on Beauty and the Beast. La Belle, which showcases Imago’s genius at stagecraft, puppetry, theatre, and original songs opens December 2016. In the meantime, we’ll stop off and experience the world of Japanese fusion in Artistic Co-Director Jerry Mouawad’s production of The Lady Aoi, coming this March. In May, Artistic Co-Director

Carol Triffle opens an original, wacky, always unpredictable romp-of-a-play-on-a-whirl called Cloud.

Stay with us as we continue on our voyage of theatre. And yes, we shall not deceive—this is a letter asking for your support. As a loyal

Please give. With new adventures ahead, we need it more than ever. If you can give, please do. If you can give more than

you gave before, please do. We appreciate your commitment to our art. Come along. It promises to be a fantastic ride!

With warm regards and best wishes for a happy holiday season,
