MARCH PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Let’s celebrate the return of Daylight Savings Time! It always leaves me with the illusion that I get more time to accomplish things each day! We had a really lovely February with one of our favorite gatherings at Le Bistro. It is so fitting for us to support the Sno Isle Skill Center where ~40% of Chef Becky Pechman’s students go on to culinary school or related studies in the hospitality industry. A wonderful way for us to empower young high school girls. It is also the meeting at which we actually distribute grants to the organizations we have chosen to support this year. A truly wonderful group as always and such an inspiration to hear from each program’s spokesperson about what they will accomplish with their grants. This month is our wonderful luncheon for International Women’s Day/Zonta Rose Day. By combining forces with sister organizations in our community, we have put together a most impressive panel of powerful women who will energize, educate and inspire us all I am sure. A huge shout out to Cynthia Weaver and Isbell Juntilla who have done such a great job of getting this put together! Hopefully our ZClub members will attend so look for them and introduce yourself, make them feel welcome. Our Area Leader Kladia Robertsdottir-Lewis will be joining us for this event and she will be having dinner the evening before (24th) with several Zontians so get in touch with Susan Zakos if you’d like to be a part of that group. I think our work to empower women is made easier and more effective by creating close ties with the other Clubs in our Area. The Service Committee will be choosing our YWPA recipients this month. There are, as usual, amazing applicants and I look forward to hearing about who wins. You will see in this Zontagram the Nominating Committee’s slate of officers and directors represented for election and re-election in May. All of us running for re-election are really excited about continuing our work for the women of Snohomish County! We are all invited to a wonderful Area Workshop in Olympia April 24th and 25th, I hope Zonta of Everett will be well represented there.

New Member Bio Carrie Blair

I joined Zonta of Everett Spring of 2014, soon after hearing

about the Club and what you do from Judith Strand. Zonta is

a perfect fit for me because I have always volunteered for

something (including Planned Parenthood and Lake Stevens

Education Foundation), and I believe people matter above all

else.

I was born in Seattle, and consider it home even though I

have lived and raised my family in Snohomish County for 25

years now. I have also lived in other areas of the state.

I have always loved working. After attending Seattle Central Community College I had a

few great career starts with Nordstrom, then Olson’s Foods before switching to part-time

pharmacy positions while my children were young. I now have over 20 years of

Pharmacy experience in many different areas. Currently I am VP of Marketing &

Customer Care at Matrx Ltc Pharmacy. Matrx is a young, growing company so this is a

very exciting time for my career.

Timing is perfect for my career taking off, because so have my children. My daughter,

Alexis is a junior at Eastern Oregon University, where she is studying for a Master’s in

Elementary Education. My son, Dylan is a freshman at Washington State University, he

is undecided on a major, but plans to study ‘some kind of science’.

My husband Chuck and I have been married for 24 years. He is using his extra time

playing in a rock band ‘Crooked Mile’. He plays bass guitar, sings and writes many

original songs.

Travelling is my most favorite thing to do, hopefully I will have more opportunities to see

the world in upcoming years. I also enjoy cooking (baking especially), being with friends,

live shows, yoga, going for walks, and good wine.

Update on the Voices Against Violence Program

Created by Zonta International on Feb 25, 2015 Zonta International is proud to partner with UN Women and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) to support the rollout of the Voices Against Violence curriculum in 12 countries. Zonta’s support of this project will fund four regional workshops, the first of which was held in Pune, India from 12-17 December 2014. Forty-eight (48) trainers from 7 countries (Fiji, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and Sri Lanka) participated. Each of these trainers, in turn, is expected to run national trainings that will train an additional 30 leaders in their home countries to deliver the Voices Against Violence curriculum to young people ages 5 to 25 years. Past International Director Dilruba Ahmed represented Zonta International at the training and participated in an expert panel and was joined by District 25 Governor Mahazaver Dalaal and members from the Zonta clubs in Mumbai in the audience. Pre- and post-workshop surveys indicated that 40 of the 45 participants showed improved knowledge, awareness and attitudes related to violence against women and girls and exhibited positive attitudes in seeing men and boys as part of the solution in ending violence against women and girls. The next regional workshop will be held in Zambia in April 2015.
