Do we know who all of the authors of the Bible are? The short answer to that is no. In times past, however, it was considered important to be able to as-sign authorship to each book. This was because the authority of the book was in part reiterated by associating it with known authoritative voices (e.g., the prophets). Consequently, tradition is filled with associations of books with particular authors. Some of these offer internal rationale (e.g., David with Psalms or Solomon with the Song of Songs) while others offer only the most fragile of circumstantial evidence (e.g., Jeremiah with 1 and 2 Kings).

PentateuchThe tradition of Moses as the author of the Pentateuch

is strong both in the Old Testament and in the New Testa-ment (see “Authors and Books,” p. 000). The text offers strong confirmation that Moses should at least be considered the speaker, author, or editor of a large portion of the Pentateuch, although occasional statements appear to require a later hand (e.g., Gen. 12:6; 36:31; Deut. 34).

Historical BooksThe historical books offer the least information about

their authorship. The traditional authors such as Samuel (for the books of Samuel) or Jeremiah (for the books of Kings) enjoy little ancient or textual support as authors and have generally been so identified by nothing more than the promi-nence of their roles. All major characters are referred to in the third person. In addition, no later biblical literature of-fers any suggestion as to authorship. Many today believe that Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings were all edited together during the exile or soon after it. This group is therefore some-times labeled the “Deuteronomistic History,” since it reflects the theological themes of Deuteronomy. As a result, modern writers typically refer to authors such as the deuteronomist (Joshua – Kings) or the chronicler (Chronicles).

ProphetsIt is appropriate to assume that the prophets to whom

prophetic writings were attached were the ones who delivered

those messages. That does not necessarily mean that the prophet was the one who wrote down the message or who compiled the book of those messages. It should be noted that the prophets are at times re-ferred to in the third person. In Jeremiah we are told that a scribe named Baruch served as his secretary (Jer. 36:4). In Isaiah many believe the first five chap-ters to be a digest of the oracles that stretched throughout his career. If this is

true, it would suggest a later editor. Some believe that a few of the prophetic books may have had additional prophecies added on at a later date, perhaps by generations of followers of the prophet, but criteria have not been clearly established so that such determinations could be made with confidence.

WisdomIt is no surprise that Solomon is connected to a number of

the wisdom books of Israel. Sections of Proverbs are explicitly attributed to Solomon (1:1; 10:1; 25:1). He is mentioned by name in Song of Songs (1:1, 5; 3:7, 9; 8:11 – 12) possibly as author. In Ecclesiastes the first person pronoun is used for one describing himself as the son of David, king in Jerusalem (1:1, 12), giving the strong impression that Solomon is thus identified, although his name is never used.

The Covenant and Abram. God did not ask Abram to give up any-thing that he was not going to replace. God asked Abram to leave his land, and God promised to take Abram to a new land. After Abram arrived there, God said he would give him that land. God also asked Abram to leave his kinship group. This meant giving up the pro-tection and security a kinship group provided. He was leaving his roots and putting aside all that was familiar to him. In return, God offered Abram a family that would become a great nation. Eventu-ally God told him that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. The third thing God asked Abram to leave behind was the “house of his father.” This could be identified as his inheritance. In the ancient Near East, household gods were passed down from generation to generation. There were ancestors to make offerings to and to care for. Most important was the care of elderly parents and eventually their burial. The inheritance one received included not only material possessions and ownership of land; it involved taking one’s place in the family line and appropriating the blessings that had been passed down through the family line. As Abram put all of this behind him, God offered a threefold blessing for him. God would bless Abram, he would be a bless-ing, and he would be a channel of blessing. The first meant that Abram would come under God’s care, protection, and favor, which would bring him safety and prosperity. The second meant that Abram would provide care and protection to those in favor with him. And the third meant that God would bring blessing to other people through Abram and his family.

In Christians in an Age of Wealth, Craig L. Blomberg asks tough questions about the place and purpose of wealth and material possessions. This book investigates the Bible’s many references to material wealth, work, poverty, and generosity, and applies these findings specifically to the Christian church. Readers will be challenged to think holistically about the blessings of prosperity and the associated responsibility to look after the poor.

Blomberg outlines biblical passages that teach about the goodness of wealth, as God originally designed it, and the ways in which material blessing can function properly. Yet both the Old Testament and the New Testament also warn against the dangers that loving one’s own wealth or coveting another’s can generate. The key, Blomberg explains, is giving generously, even sacrificially, to those in need. By doing so, Christians participate in God’s original good design for abundance and demonstrate the active love of Christ. Rather than pitting generous living against gospel proclamation, Blomberg demonstrates that each is incomplete without the other.

CRAIG L. BLOMBERG (PhD, University of Aberdeen, Scotland) is distinguished professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of fifteen books and more than eighty articles in journals or multi-author works.

In his sixth and final will Herod designated Archelaus as

king of Idumea, Judea, and Samaria; Antipas as ruler in

Galilee and Perea; and Philip as governor of the lands

northeast of the Sea of Galilee However, the Romans did not

give Archelaus the title of king but rather “ethnarch” (mean-

ing “ruler of the nation”) Archelaus’s ten-year rule (4 BC – AD

6) was brutal It is little wonder that when Mary, Joseph, and

the baby Jesus returned from Egypt, they avoided returning to

Judea, for they heard that Archelaus was ruling in place of his

father (Matt 2:19 – 23) Instead, they proceeded to Galilee and

settled in the village of Nazareth

Herod Antipas (4 BC – AD 39) ruled over both Galilee and

Perea Each of these territories had a large number of Jews The

area north of the Sea of Galilee was higher in elevation and was

called Upper Galilee To the south, Lower Galilee was much

more open to outside influence, and its broad, spacious valleys

provided good land for growing grain crops

As Jesus was growing up, Antipas was constructing his

new capital at Sepphoris (3 BC – AD 10), which may have had

a population of 5,000 This city overlooked valuable farmland

In Egypt, the Twelfth Dynasty, in the period known as

the Middle Kingdom, was a time of great prosperity Pyra-

mids were again being built, administrative and bureaucratic

structures were in place, and the arts and letters f lourished;

indeed, this was the “classical” period of Egyptian literature

Commercial contacts with the Levant, especially with Byblos,

were common

Egyptian contact with the Levant is reflected in the Story

of Sinuhe (ANET, 18 – 23), a tale of an Egyptian who fled from

Egypt to the Levant He first journeyed to Byblos but then

Nile Delta: the fertile “ land of Goshen,” where Israel lived in northeast Egypt

When Abram returned to Canaan, he spent

most of his time in the Negev, with occasional

trips to the Hill Country of Judah and Ephraim

The patriarchs raised sheep and goats and grew

grain crops (see, e g , Gen 13:2, 5 – 7; 24:35; 26:12)

Wells provided water for their families and flocks,

though the control of these water sources was often

disputed Both Abraham and Isaac had conflicts

with the king of Gerar over wells located between

Gerar and Beersheba (Gen 21:25; 26:12 – 33)

The attempt of Abram and his clan to live

in the Bethel/Ai region (Gen 13) seems to have

been somewhat problematic, possibly because

there was not enough grazing land in the area

or because the Canaanites and Perizzites were

hostile (13:7) Lot, Abram’s nephew, chose to

leave the hill country and settle in Sodom, while

Abram remained where he was

Evangelical Theology is a systematic theology written from the perspective of a biblical scholar. Michael F. Bird contends that the center, unity, and boundary of the evangelical faith is the evangel (i.e. gospel), as opposed to things like justification by faith or inerrancy. In his unique approach, the evangel is the epicenter and unifying thread in evangelical theology and the hermeneutical lens through which the various subfields of theology need to be understood. After a sustained drought of trinitarian engagement, the doctrine of the Trinity has increasingly resurged to the forefront of the evangelical confession. The second half of the twentieth century, however, saw a different kind of trinitarian theology developing, giving way to what has commonly been referred to as the “social Trinity.”

Social—or better, relational—trinitarianism has garnered a steady reaction from those holding to a classical doctrine of the Trinity, prompting a more careful and thorough re-reading of sources and bringing about not only a much more coherent view of early trinitarian development but also a strong critique of relational trinitarian offerings. Yet confusion remains. As evangelicals get better at articulating the doctrine of the Trinity, and as the current and next generation of believers in various Christian traditions seek to be more trinitarian, the way forward for trinitarian theology has to choose between the relational and classical model, both being legitimate options.

In this volume, leading contributors—one evangelical and one mainline/Catholic representing each view—establish their models and approaches to the doctrine of the Trinity, each highlighting the strengths of his view in order to argue how it best reflects the orthodox perspective. To facilitate a genuine debate and to make sure that the key issues are teased out, each contributor addresses the same questions regarding their trinitarian methodology, doctrine, and its implications.
