Mercy Days, May 2-4 (12:15 p.m., each day)

For more information on Mercy Days, see page 7. The Ascension, May 5 (10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.)

Christ rose before the disciples 40 days after His res-urrection and was hidden by a cloud, indicating that He would now live and rule with the Father forever. We mark this event 40 days after Easter with the Feast of the Ascension. Please support Zion’s First Communion class as they receive the Lord’s holy Body and Blood on this same date at 6:30 p.m. Pray for them, and join them in that worship. By celebrating First Communion on Ascen-sion, we confess that the Body of Jesus is not re-moved from us, but is even closer, turning even our altars into God’s right hand.

Pastoral Letter How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news.”

~ Isaiah 52:7

Dear Zion,

They say that bad news travels more quickly than good, but they’re wrong! Just look! The good news (gospel) of Jesus Christ has crisscrossed the earth, and it will con-tinue until our Lord returns. By that gospel, God has built Himself a Church that will never fall (Matthew 16:18). Our thanks to Him is endless, and it only grows as we con-sider what now unfolds at Zion.

As members of Zion have read in our recent mailing, Pr. Gulhaugen will be starting his planned retirement on September 30. After that date, he will assist the min-istry on a part-time basis until Zion has found his replacement. Pr. Gulhaugen’s feet may not have climbed mountains, but they have journeyed from North Dakota to Iowa to Wisconsin in service of God’s Word and sacraments, and we will give heartfelt thanks for that ministry at a reception in September.

At the same time, Zion welcomes a new, part-time staff member: seminarian

Joe Pinzl, who studies for the ministry at Luther Seminary. Recently married, Joe is a distance-learning student at the seminary, and so he lives in Wausau with his wife, Samantha, who works for the Marathon County health department (she also plays in Zion’s hand-chimes choir). In my letter to the congregation about Pastor Ted’s retire-ment, I promised to share more information about Joe in this newsletter.

Joe started worshiping and attending Bible study at Zion about a year ago. Originally from Mercer, he graduated from Michigan State in 2012, and thereafter in-terned as an outreach director with Rep. Sean Duffy. An avid athlete, he worked during that same time as an assistant football coach for his former high school in Park Falls. Originally a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves (where he served his battalion as a prayer leader), he is now in the chaplaincy training program for the Naval Reserves. Last summer, before the start of seminary, he worked at Homme Home for Youth in Wittenberg. As you can see, Joe is an active and capable young man.

It was soon clear to me that Joe’s presence on staff would enhance Zion’s minis-try as well as provide him with valuable learning experience. Your church council and personnel committee readily agreed. At Zion, you can expect to see Joe assisting the pastors with worship, visitation, and outreach. He will work with our youth and broaden our ministry there. After some time of learning, you can expect to see Joe lead

In the Liturgy

Below are the Bible readings that you will hear at weekend worship during May. Read them before worship, and then return to them throughout the following week.

Sunday, May 1: Acts 16:9-15, Revelation 21:9-14, 21-27, John 16:23-33 Sunday, May 8: Acts 1:12-26, Revelation 22:1-6, 12-20, John 17:20-26 Sunday, May 15: Genesis 11:1-9, Acts 2:1-21, John 14:23-31 *Feast of Pentecost* Sunday, May 22: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31, Acts 2:14a, 22-36, John 8:48-59 *The Trinity*

Sunday, May 29: I Kings 8:22-24, 27-29, 41-43, Galatians 1:1-12, Luke 7:1-10

Bible studies and weekday prayer services; he will also develop new projects of mutual interest to him and Zion. As a student, and not yet ordained, he will not preside at Holy Communion, Holy Baptism, funerals, or weddings. His title will be “Pastoral Assistant,” and you may call him “Vicar Joe” or “Vicar Pinzl” (“vicar” being a term traditionally used by Lutherans for “pastor apprentices”).

God willing, Joe will be with us for three years, until he graduates from seminary and is ordained. For two of those years (the first and last), he will work at Zion part-time; for the second year, Joe will be a full time vicar, as that is the year that all seminari-ans must complete a full-time internship. It will be important for us to remember, as we support and love Joe in the Lord, that he is a student, and so his primary calling is to study the Word of God and pray. By supporting him in that primary calling, Zion will be gracing the larger Church with a pastor formed in spirit and truth.

These developments provide Zion with new opportunities: to celebrate one herald of good news as he eases into retirement, and to welcome a new herald-in-training. Can Zion do it? “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Part of being a Christian congregation means living with the faith that God has provided us with all that we need, and will supply whatever we lack, to minister in His name. Would we expect anything less from the One who raised Jesus and now sends us His Holy Spirit?

Peace!

Pastor Gjerde

From the Associate

On Thursday, May 5, the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, three young people of our con-gregation (Noah Harter, Amber Nass, and Gabriel Nass) will receive communion for the first time. As they do, they will join you and the whole Body of Christ as they receive the merci-ful and loving gift of Christ’s own life, His Body and His Blood. Why should this matter to you? For one thing, you are encouraged to come to worship the Risen and Ascended Lord, to celebrate His return to the Father, to rejoice that He has accom-plished all He came to do as God and Man for your salvation, to give thanks that He is now our Mediator with the Father through the wounds He still carries for your sake, that He will return in glory just as He left, and that He is preparing the Church to receive the continued presence of the Holy Spirit in order that she might continue His saving ministry on earth as His Holy Body. Come and worship the Ascended Lord Jesus Christ! It is this Christ who promises to come to His children in His Holy Supper. It is He who gives the blessings of His love and mercy through His own Body and Blood. The whole Church, including you, should rejoice and give thanks when someone enters into those bless-ings for the first time. Their brothers and sisters in Christ should surround them with joy and thanksgiving as they join with them at the Lord’s Table to receive forgiveness, life, and sal-vation. As Pastor Gjerde wrote earlier in this newsletter, “Pray for them and join them in that worship. By celebrating First Communion on Ascension, we confess that the Body of Christ is not removed from us, but is even closer, turning our altars into God’s right hand.” Come and worship with these precious children of God as they eat and drink with the family of God for the first time and receive with them the blessings of Christ who is not a God who is far off, but who is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.

By the time you read this, most of you will be know that I am retiring from full-time ministry later this year. I have been asked by Zion’s leadership to continue on a part-time basis to help out until a new associate pastor is called to this ministry, a task which I am happy to do. In the meantime, my wife and I will join our family and continue to worship with you at Zion. Our time here has been blessed and I give God thanks for the opportunity. May He bless our continued time together as we gather around Word and Sacrament to receive His blessings and give Him our thanks and praise. Peace be with you! ~Pr. Gulhaugen

Weekly Bible Studies Sundays, 10:15 a.m.: Resurrection in the Bible / Christ in the Old Testament

The Sunday morning Bible study will begin two new studies over the next several months. First, we’ll look at what Scripture teaches us about the resurrection and the hope of eternal life. What doe Christians look forward to? Then we’ll explore where the Old Testament points ahead to Jesus Christ in its stories and prophecies.

(Church Hall)

Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m.: Acts

Acts is the story of God acting through the Holy Spirit to spread the truth of the saving act of Jesus’ death and resurrection throughout the world. That is the story, its charac-

ters, its events, and its teaching, on which this class will focus. (Church Hall)

Thursday, 7:00 a.m.: Men’s Bible Study: Genesis

The word “genesis” means “beginnings,” and this book of the Bible tells us about the beginnings of more than just creation: the beginning of sin, the beginning of salvation, and the beginning of Abraham’s family, the nation of Israel. As we learn our begin-nings, we learn who we are and who we shall be in the light of Christ. (Church Hall)

Children’s and Youth Education

Sunday School

The Sunday School children will sing at the 9:00 a.m. service on Mother’s Day, May 8. The last day of Sunday School will be May 22. Regular classes will be held on that day with a pizza and bowling party to follow at 12:10 p.m. We will eat pizza at the church and then go bowling at Day’s Bowl-a-Dome about 1:30 PM. To participate, please sign up in the church office (715-848-7286). A donor has covered the costs of this event.

First Communion

Noah Harter, Amber Nass, and Gabriel Nass are preparing to receive the blessings of the Lord’s Supper. They will receive their First Communion on Thursday, May 5, the As-cension of Our Lord, at 6:30 p.m. Please pray for them and support them by your pres-ence as we celebrate Jesus’ eternal rule and nearer presence at the Father’s right hand.

Confirmation

Six young people will be confirmed in the catholic and apostolic faith on Sunday, May 15, at 9:00 a.m. Exam Night is Wednesday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. Classes will con-tinue for the first year confirmation students through Wednesday, May 18.

“Mercy Days”: May 2-4

To pray God for His mercy is no less than to pray for His daily help in time of need. On May 2, 3, and 4, at 12:15 p.m., Zion will gather to celebrate its third annual “Mercy Days,” offering up this prayer on behalf of our homes, the local neighborhood, greater Wausau, and the world. In so doing, we join millions of Christians who have observed this practice throughout history.

Our particular focus this year will be on the suffering

Church.

Here are the things for you to know and do:

1) For each day, our prayer will have a particular focus.

Monday, May 2: mercy for our Christians suffering persecution Tuesday, May 3: mercy for our homes, nation, and farms/economy Wednesday, May 4: mercy for the anxious, sick, addicted, dying, and those with other afflictions

2) Please turn in your prayer requests!

Boxes will be placed near each entrance at Zion for you to stuff full with prayer requests. You are surrounded every day by people who need prayer. You may turn in general concerns, groups, or individuals (you may remain anonymous).

3) Your presence is important.

The Holy Spirit has gathered us into this congregation to be one, united voice for the sake of mercy. Our numbers don’t “convince Him” to answer, but we do comfort one another by our presence—a task of love—and we hallow our neighborhood and demon-strate our commitment to mercy. Please, make every effort to attend. Our “Mercy Days” grow out of the ancient practice of Rogation Days, in which the con-gregations prayed for God’s mercy on behalf of their communities during the three days prior to the Feast of the Ascension. By taking up this practice, we are joining our voice to a “prayer chain” that is unbroken across centuries and centuries of use.

A “Note” From the Kantor

Taking a closer look at CANTICLES

“The term ‘canticles’ refers to those texts in the Bible that were sung. In its broadest sense it includes Old Testament as well as New Testament texts. In the strictest sense it refers to texts that are not the Psalms, thought sometimes, especially in the Anglican tra-dition, it is used for some psalm texts as well, like the Jubilate (Psalm 100), Cantate

(Psalm 98), and Deus miseratur (Psalm 67).” [Paul Westermeyer, Te Deum: The Church

and Music (Fortress Press)]

One of the main characteristics of a canticle is that they tell the story of God’s deliver-ance. Think of Easter Vigil and the Song of the Three Young Men. You can read the text in the Lutheran Book of Worship #18. This song of praise follows the story of the “Three Men in the Fiery Furnace.” What a powerful story of God’s saving work! An

excellent reason to “Praise Him and magnify Him forever!”

Other canticles used often at Zion are: the Benedictus attributed to Zechariah (Luke 1:68-79); the Magnificat, the song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55); the Gloria in Excelsis, the song of the angels (Luke 2:14); the Nunc Dimittis, the song of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32); and “Worthy is Christ,” a compilation of the hymns of the early church (Revelation 5:12, 9,

13; 7:10, 12; 19:14, 6-9.)

One of the best known canticles is the Te Deum. Although not a Biblical text, it repre-sents the main purpose of the New Testament. The Te Deum was composed after the New Testament period and sometimes is attributed to Ambrose and Augustine at Augustine’s baptism, or Niceta, the Bishop of Remesiana. In this Easter season, we sing the Te Deum during Wednesday Matins. It has three parts. The first portion is a Sanctus (“Holy, Holy, Holy”) in which the whole church praises the Trinity. The next section points to Christ the King of Glory and tells the entire story of Christ’s life. The third section is a series of versicles from the Psalms: “bless us, save us, keep us without sin.” The Lutheran church is a singing church—not only in the hymnody but also in the lit-urgy, which includes canticles! Joy in Jesus, Kantor Irene Beethe

Women of Zion

“This organization shall serve our Lord Jesus Christ by pro-

moting charity, fellowship and devotion among women of

Zion.”

The Women of Zion meeting on April 6 was very informative as we learned the correct way to perform CPR and also had a demonstration on the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). A big thank you to our Parish Nurse, Lenore Grosinske and the Wausau Fire Department for this wonderful program. The nominating committee came up with candidates for the slate of Executive Officers and they are as follows: Vice-President, Ruth Hochberger, Secretary, Jackie McLaugh-lin, Treasurer, Jan Dettmering and Members at Large, Grace Mueller and Norma Curtis. Since there were no candidates for the President, I was asked if I would continue as President for another year. A motion was made and seconded to have me remain Presi-dent. DATES TO REMEMBER: April 30, 2016 — Spring Rummage Sale at 9:00 a.m. with setup on April 29 in the school gym. Sign-up sheets were passed around at the meeting so if you signed up, please mark your calendars! May 10, 2016 — Spring Salad Buffet at 6:00 p.m. Again, sign-up sheets were passed around so if you signed up for setup, working, bringing food or cleanup, please mark your calendars also. The program will be a presentation by Majestic Farms Greenhouse and Landscaping. Tickets are on sale at the church office, $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. We will have the election of the Executive Officers as well as discussion on the Spring Salad Buffet. Hostesses are Irene Beethe and Jan Dettmering. Joan Koch, President

Women’s Community, Wausau Goal $1,000

Lutheran CORE Goal $2,000

The Women’s Community, Wausau

The Women’s Community is a vital part of our community, providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. Just a few of the things being done are providing lifesaving shelter for women and children escaping abusive relationships, legal advocacy through the court systems, 24 hour crisis intervention, community education in schools, businesses and churches, advocating for victims of domestic violence in later life, and our Healing Through Art Program. Your prayers and monetary gift help to continue to

offer services to anyone in our community who needs them.

Lutheran CORE

The purpose of Lutheran CORE can be summed up in two words – Shel-

ter and Voice. As a Shelter for confessing Lutherans, Lutheran CORE supports and con-nects Lutheran individuals and congregations who seek to live in accord with Biblical and confessional teachings and practices. As a Prophetic Voice, Lutheran CORE advo-cates for Biblical authority and confessional fidelity among churches of the Lutheran community. Plant A Row or Fill A Box for Strassenfest ‘16!

Enjoy the convenience of Electronic Giving

We want to remind you that Zion offers electronic giving as a way to automate your regular weekly offering. Electronic giving offers convenience for you and provides ongoing dona-tion consistency for our congregation. Call the church office if you are interested — quite helpful in the summer when you might be away!

It’s a small effort now with large rewards in October.

Find a large box (or two), label it “For Strassenfest”

and set it aside for a quick and easy place to store your

donation items for Strassenfest ‘16. Keep that box in

mind when you’re spring cleaning or shopping at estate

and rummage sales throughout the summer. Collect or

make items such as a woodworking or craft projects;

antique or vintage pieces; puzzles and books; crocheted

items...the list is endless and a box is the perfect re-

minder and storage place. If it gets too full, give Zion a

call and we’ll pick it up for you!

With warmer temps hitting in April, gardening pro-

jects have already begun. Think about adding an

extra “Strassenfest Row” to your garden. Toma-

toes, peppers, beans, corn, beets, cabbage, garlic,

onions and potatoes make wonderful fresh or

canned donations. Herbs are a hot item fresh, dried

or blended into a pesto. Homemade jams, jellies

and sauces are also a favorite. Some of the most ‘in

demand’ canned items include: red cabbage, beets,

sauerkraut and pickles...so if you have a special

family recipe, consider making a few more jars to stock our shelves.

Strassenfest 2016 is Saturday, October 8th. Contact Dave and Lori Torkko with questions,

suggestions or to volunteer: 715-842-2704 or [email protected].
