The Heart of the Matter
Dear Friends in Christ,
This past week I had the opportunity to join 10 other people from
our congregation and attend the Global Leadership Summit of
the Willow Creek Association. This summit was a gathering of
400,000 leaders across the globe. These are men and women rep-
resenting churches, businesses, schools and governments with
the purpose to learn better ways to bring transformation to our
communities. The core value of the summit is humility which has all participants
recognizing how much we have yet to learn. The founder and pastor of Willow
Creek Church, Bill Hybels, inspired us all to follow what he called the “Ten Laws of
Civility.” Included in this list is our need to set a good example of how to have a spir-
ited conversation with those who differ with us and who are different from us. We
need to refuse to use belittling words, but instead be courteous, not interrupt, form
opinions carefully and use respect. These are values of the Christian life.
Also at this event we heard Sam Adeyemi, Founder and Senior Pastor of Daystar
Christian Centre in Nigeria, speak about personal and communal transformation.
When it comes to leadership and faith, he said that the heart of the matter is a
matter of the heart. He helped us understand that whatever we see and hear over time
will enter our hearts and impact our lives. This is an important concept as we think
about all that we see and hear in our lives today. We are bombarded with images
and words that represent values that run counter to the life Jesus calls us to live.
These are the questions I find myself asking. What are our children and youth hearing
and seeing that, over time, enters their hearts and minds? Where are our kids learn-
ing the kinds of values that we hold dear as Christians? How is it that the next gen-
erations will be shaped and formed in a way that their actions and words will lead the
way to peace and love? Yes, our children and youth learn great things about teamwork,
respect and honesty through school, extra-curricular activities including the sports. We
are discovering, however, that this is not enough impact for the younger genera-
tion to grow into maturity and Christ like ways of life. I will be ruthlessly honest
here. We, as community leaders and parents need to reprioritize our commitments.
Some of us baby boomer parents have learned the hard way that our sons and daugh-
ters could have used more exposure and experience with matters of the heart as they
relate to faith and values. There is much to contend with in our culture and it is
easy to become overwhelmed by it all. We are not, however, meant to do this alone.
We have the church. We have each other. Most important, we have Christ.

A Big Thank You from MVPHP School Supply Drive! Many thanks for your generous and continued support for the School Supply Drive. Many children will start off the new school year with supplies needed for a great year. Thanks again. May God continue to bless each of you.
To live as a Christian today means we need to be intentional about our growth in faith
and love. On a daily basis we see young people lose their way through addiction, acts
of hate and violence as well as deep loneliness and fear. The next generation of our
leaders will not be easily shaped by the virtues of courage, fortitude and grit with-
out the strength of our faith, a faith shared through learning events, worship, ser-
vice events and community building. Yes, I’m making the case for your church com-
mitment. Zion Lutheran Church belongs to God but it becomes your faith family
through your own involvement. Summer is almost over; it’s time to come back to
church. It’s time to join this important conversation regarding our priorities as a peo-
ple of God.
I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in
your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. Ephesians 3:16-17
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Kathy
Faith Formation on Sundays: Meeting up with Jesus
From our little ones to our elders, the spotlight is on Jesus in our Sunday morning Faith
Formation classes. What we hear and experience in worship will also be our focus for
learning. Through a variety of resources, we are engaging the stories of Matthew and
learning more about Jesus.
Our pre-school, elementary and middle school kids will meet in their classrooms on
September 10 at 10:00 to meet their teachers and participate in a service project for
God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday.
Adults, watch for more information regarding the learning opportunities beginning
Sunday September 17.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD 2017
Main Drive Oct 15 – Nov 10
Once again it is time to think about our annual drive for Samaritan’s
Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry. Over the past 7
years the generous folks of Zion have contributed 1,385 boxes.
Children in over 140 countries received shoebox gifts that were
packed during the 2016 collection season.
Each shoebox is a Gospel opportunity to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to some of the most
remote areas of the world. These shoeboxes open doors for Jesus to come to these children,
families and communities. Through these gifts, children get a chance to know Jesus and learn to
share the Gospel with others through the 12 week discipleship program, “The Greatest Journey.”
The fun that goes into the box is only the beginning; the hope and love of Jesus that comes out of
the box is eternal.
The 2017 collection week is November 13-20. Brochures detailing packing information will be
available, as well as empty boxes for you to take home, fill and return. The requested donation for
each shoebox has increased to $9 a box. This donation amount covers rising shipping expenses and
the printing costs for The Greatest Gift booklet that each child receives with his/her shoebox. Mone-
tary gifts are also welcome. Donation boxes will be available at several locations in the church.
Let’s be the hands of Jesus as we pack one or more shoeboxes for needy boys and girls, knowing we
will be bringing joy to the hearts of God’s children. Any questions, please contact Linda Huckleberry
(301) 371-6677, email [email protected] or Linda Sanders, (301) 676-3272, or
Below is a list of things you can pack in your shoebox. Candy and toothpaste will no longer be ac-cepted due to customs regulations.

Celebrate Recovery launches Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, Maryland. The organizing team will be on hand at this first session to welcome all to this new ministry at Zion. Celebrate Recovery is a community based ministry. Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program with Biblical foundations. The 12 Steps with accompanying Scriptures and the 8 Principles based on the Beatitudes, offer partici-pants a clear path of salvation and discipleship. Celebrate Recovery is all about bringing hope, freedom, sobriety, healing, and the opportunity to give back one day at a time through our one and only true Higher Power, Jesus Christ. The 12 Steps and the 8 Principles work seamlessly together, tying historical recovery to timeless Biblical teaching.
The organizing Celebrate Recovery team is looking for a few more people to volunteer, especially more women leaders.
Audio Upgrade Donation News
The in-house upgrade of our audio system in the sanctuary is
progressing nicely, with donations coming in already. We will be
gathering a crew to assist Eddie Musser as he oversees the installation. We look
forward to the increase in presence and clarity the upgrade should
provide for all our talented musicians, vocalists, and of course our
Pastors. All donations should be footnoted Audio System Upgrade.
Contact Pastor Marv or Jim Hoover for more detailed information.
Blessing of the Backpacks:
Attention Students of All Ages! Bring your backpacks on Sunday, September 3! We will be doing a blessing of the backpacks to kick off your school year!

Social Media Update —
SOCIAL MEDIA IS ALL ABOUT STORYTELLING Jesus used storytelling as the foundation of no less than 35% of his teachings. For example, instead of simply telling us about forgiveness, Jesus shows us forgiveness through the story of the prodigal son. The goal of a social media story-teller is first and foremost to...show rather than tell faith stories.
This fall the media team will be featuring the stories of faith people who are engaged in ministry and mission at Zion. The media team is excited about this faith storytelling project. Watch for the first stories to appear early this fall on Zion’s social media and web page.

Adopt a Family Program 2017 This year we are collecting for the Adopt a Family for Christmas December 6, 2017 between 3-6PM at Middletown UMC (MUMC). Christmas gifts will be passed out to the families on December 7, 2017 between 3-6PM at MUMC. If you are in need of assistance or you know someone in our valley who is in need, please call Middletown Valley People Helping People (MVPHP) at 301-371-3119 and leave a clear message with name and phone number by November 17, 2017. Any family who wants to adopt a child for Christmas, please call or email Donna Jean Brandenburg at 301-371-5139 and email address is [email protected]. Monetary donations are very welcomed. Make your check payable to MVPHP and note for Christmas. Since our Sunday School Classes are smaller now, maybe the younger classes could bring in Hats, Gloves, aToy etc that MVPHP can use to add to a fam-ily for Christmas gifts. The larger classes can still adopt a family. Again please contact me for more information. Many thanks for your continuous support and your generous dona-tions. God is good and has truly blessed us all. Donna Jean Brandenburg

I Was Wondering……
How are we paying for the repairs to the pillars, outside walls, and
re-caulking of the stained glass windows in the
original church building?
In 2016 The Finance committee established the Historic
Preservation Building Fund as a place to accumulate funds for
the upkeep of the original Church built in 1859. This fund has
accumulated over $21,746 to date towards restoration of the
original building, and carries a stipulation that donations to
this fund can only be used for Historic Preservation. Our Zion
Building Fund covers maintenance and repairs on all the
properties owned by Zion.
Beginning in September 2017 our Stewardship Committee
will introduce a fund raising program to fund the needed repairs, so watch for up-
coming details on this exciting new requested for program.
Should you have a friend outside our church family who is interested in helping preserve
Middletown’s predominate landmark, brochures are found in the front landings off of
Main Street and outside the church office. We are a 501c3
non profit and their donation is tax deductable. After our
internal fundraising is under way, we will begin soliciting
prominent individuals and businesses in Frederick County to
help with our efforts.
The work on the pillars is scheduled for the spring of 2018,
the exterior repairs for the spring of 2019, and the stained
glass window repairs for the spring of 2020. For more infor-
mation contact Jim Hoover:

Weekend Back Pack Ministry The beginning of the new school year brings with it a renewed need for your help with the Weekend Backpack Ministry. This program helps supplement meals for local school chil-dren on days when school is not in session. Your donations of specific food items ensures these students receive proper nutrition. Remember, weekends are long when you are hungry. The critical need food item for September is individual cereal boxes 0.75-2.5 oz. You can also help feed a child for the entire school year with a check made out to MUMC for $150.00. Help to share Christ’s love with children in need.
Are you someone who finds yourself eating alone many times? How about joining some Friends Around the Table on the last Monday of each Month? Join this opportunity to make some new friends and find out that you are not alone. On Mondays, August 28 and September 25, we will meet at the church parking lot at 2:45 p.m. and carpool to a restaurant of choice.
For more information contact: Dixie Eichelberger at 301-371-4232 All are welcome!

Why Liturgical Dance Might Be the Right Fit for You Maybe you love to dance. Maybe you have never taken a dance class but just like to move to the music. Maybe you’ve been looking for a new way to express praise to God. Maybe you’ve been looking for a way to get more involved in worship at Zion but don’t have time in your schedule for a huge commitment.
If any of these statements apply to you then you might want to consider joining the Liturgical Dancers. Men, women, boys, and girls of all ages are invited to join the Liturgical Dancers at any time. Dance experience is NOT required although knowing left from right is helpful. The group typically participates in holiday services such as Christmas Eve and Easter, as well as roughly one worship service each month during the school year. There is typically one hour-long practice held before each dance “performance”. If there’s a service you can’t participate in that’s no problem, you can join us for the next one.
If you are interested in joining the Liturgical Dancers, just want to try it out, want more information, or have any questions please contact Anna Beth Fowler at [email protected].

Why were four outlets installed on the front of the modesty rail in the

After our last inspection by the fire Marshall we were informed that the two extension cords for the monitor and the Grand Piano climate control
were in violation of the fire code. Coblentz Electric LLC installed the four outlets to bring us up to
