THE SERVICE OF BAPTISM

Presley Sloan Wellmann September 3, 2017

Dear friends, because of sin all of humankind is separated from God. But by God’s amazing love for us, we have been reconciled in Jesus Christ. Today we are witnesses to a sacred event; the receiving of Presley Sloan Wellmann into the Kingdom of God. Jesus said: “Unless one is born of water and the Holy Spirit, they cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” Paul writes: “When anyone is baptized into Christ, they are a new creation, the old is gone, the new has come.” These are promises of Scripture. Through water and the Word, God will mark Presley as a daughter, child of God forever.

Pastor: Will you present your child to be baptized?

Parents: We present Presley Sloan Wellmann to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.

Pastor: Baptism is not magic; it is a beginning. It is a covenant made between God and parents, sponsors, pastor and congregation. It is a promise to provide a Christian environment for Presley. It is a promise to join her in worship, to introduce her to the Bible, and to pray that her faith would become her own. It is the belief that God will honor this covenant.

Parents and sponsors, will you honor the covenant you are now making with God on Presley’s behalf? If so, answer “Yes, by the help of God.”

Parents and Sponsors: Yes, by the help of God.

Pastor: Members and friends of Zion Lutheran Church, will you honor the covenant you are now making with God on Presley’s behalf? If so, answer “Yes, by the help of God.”

Members and friends: Yes, by the help of God.

Pastor: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil and all his empty promises?

Parents and Sponsors: I do.

Pastor: Do you believe in God the Father? People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints The forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen

Pastor: Presley Sloan Wellmann, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let us pray: O gracious God, by your promise, you have chosen Presley to be your child, and for this we are glad! May she come to love you, and serve you, with her lips and with her life. May her faith be a lamp for her own path, and a light for others to see. This we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Presley Sloan Wellmann, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

Congregational Represenative: Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, who is in heaven. Amen.

All: We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father and worker with us in the Kingdom of God. Amen.
