Statement of Communion

Luther found his deepest treasure in the forgiveness of sins and called it “the sun around which all other doctrines revolve like planets.” Jesus promised forgiveness in the Lord’s Supper. Deeply thank-ful for His gift to us here, we also express our deep desire to celebrate the sacrament according to His Will. As this includes doctrinal oneness, we practice close communion and ask guests to speak with Pastor Dahling before the service.

We are once again using Setting Two. For the Hymn of Praise we will be singing “This is the Feast” (page 171) and for the Post-Communion Canticle, we will sing “Thank the Lord” (page 181).

We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Mary Gallmeyer, William Case, Brian Flamme, Mike Heckman, Ashley Hunkins, Carley Manley, Sarah Rhymer (Mrs. Aaron), JoEllen Eidam, Joyce Heck-man, Kaitlyn Jenkins, Cam Koldyke, Gavin Short, Lucile Stoppenhagen, Tonya Bobay, Robert Buuck, Jon Kaehr, Rhonda Linnemeier, and Ashlyn Walker. We also remember in our prayers Jessica Gavrun who teachers 6th grade at Wyneken, Kristin Scheumann who teaches at Southeast, and Deb Bergman & Kris Blomenberg who teach the 3rd & 4th grade Sunday School class. May our Heavenly Father, guide and protect them throughout their lives.

We welcome into membership through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, LoraLynn Ann Hurst, daugh-ter of Brandon (Jake) and Kimberly (Braun) Hurst. Her godmothers are Amber Shaffer and Jody Hurst. May the Good Shepherd keep an ever-watchful eye on this most precious of His lambs.

We also welcome Allana Marie Ake, daughter of Kent & Becky (Zimmerman) Ake, as a baptized member of Fried-heim. She received the holy washing last Tuesday. Her godmothers were Donia Gerken and Heidi Current. In addition Dean Michael Brandt, son of Michael Brandt, was baptized in the faith last Saturday with David Brandt serving as his godfather. May our heavenly Father bless both of these young people and let their faith continue to grow.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand. We especially re-member Carol Hitzfield, Deb Roop, Cathy Terhune (Sherril Bradtmueller’s daughter), Kurt Braun (Dale & De-Wayne Gallmeyer’s nephew) who continues his rehabilitation at home, Jim Staub (Angela Sielschott’s father), and Rick Steiner (Angie Werling’s cousin).

We remember those who are presently serving our country—Dan Jenkins (Don’s brother) who is serving in Af-ghanistan, Jason Putteet, Mike Brandt, Randy McAllister (Fern Riemke’s son and brother of Kim and Terry), and Chad Hall (Doris Conrad’s son-in-law). May the Lord protect and guide them in their missions.

We remember in our prayers Robert & Julie Buuck, Stan & Anne Fuhrmann, Tracy & Deb Stevens, and Loren & Karen Gallmeyer who are celebrating wedding anniversaries this week. May our Heavenly Father remain at the heart of their homes, blessing and guiding them through life’s joys and challenges.

We remember in our prayers Amy DeKoninck and Isaac Florian who will be married before the Lord’s Altar this Saturday. May our Loving Father bless this couple as they begin their lives together.

We also remember in our prayers the family and friends of James Kenneth Herndon (Kandi Kiefer’s grandfather). He was called home to the arms of his Savior on Thursday, September 27, and was given Christian burial this past Wednesday. May the God of all comfort be with those who mourn, reminding them of that great day when all believers will be reunited in heaven.

We also welcome David Witt to Friedheim. He is our assigned fieldworker. We look forward to meeting him (and his family when they arrive from Florida). May the Lord bless him as he prepares for the ministry.

Today is LWML Sunday with the theme, Salted for Service. An insert describing the activities supported by our LWML chapter can be found in today’s bulletin. On the back of that page, information on the various mission projects supported by both the national organization and the Indiana District are outlined. How are these pro-jects funded? They are funded through mites. Mite boxes have changed in color and design over the years, but what has never changed is the dedication of freely given offerings for the purpose of reaching out to others with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Districts still retain 75% of mite offerings for the work of the LWML at that level. National mites fund over $1 million in mission grants. Please continue to pray for the success of this important mission outreach of the church. There will be a door collection this morning to help support these mission pro-jects.

If you are unable to be in church, listen to WZBD (92.7 FM) from 9:05 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. and hear it live. You can also listen to the broadcast over the Internet. Just log on to our website (www.zionfriedheim.org) and “Click here to listen to Zion’s worship service on Sundays from 9:05 - 9:50.”

Listen to the Lutheran Hour, which airs on Sunday on WLW (700) from Cincinnati at 7 a.m. and on Van Wert sta-tions WERT (1220) and WKSD (99.7 FM) at 10:30 a.m. The program is broadcast on Sundays at 8 a.m. on WZBD (92.7 FM) and on WFCV (1090 AM) at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Lutheran Hour can also be heard on WOWO (1190 AM) on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m.

Today’s greeter is Kim Schamerloh; next week’s, Dan & Diane Bultemeyer. Greeters are needed for October 28. Questions? See Amy Walker who is the coordinator for October. Two greeters are needed for each Sunday (a couple or two individuals). The sign-up sheet can be found in the south entranceway. Look at the available dates and sign up for one of them!

You can watch Worship for Shut-Ins on Sunday mornings at 6:30 a.m. on WPTA-TV Channel 21, at 8 a.m. on Digi-tal 33.2 & Satellite 252 on Sunday mornings, or on Comcast Cable Channel 55 on Sunday and Monday afternoons at 4 p.m. They also broadcast via DIRECTV Channel 377 on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. You can also go to their website, www.worshipforshutins.org.

Today D. J. Kitson’s illustration is the cover for the bulletin. Parents, once your child’s artwork appears in the bul-letin, you may pick up the original picture to take home and put on your frig or in your child’s scrapbook. The drawings will be on a table in the Gathering Area.

Included in this morning’s bulletin is our weekly study guide, “The Root of Evil.” This month’s guide is written by Rev. Jeff Keuning who serves the dual parishes of St. John’s (Casey, Iowa) and Zion (Dexter, Iowa).

The Busy Women’s Bible Class meets in the conference room in the office at Tim & Kris Blomenberg’s. You are welcome to join the group this Monday evening at 7 p.m. The Thursday morning LWML Bible class will meet at 9 a.m. on October 11 at the home of Bonnie Buuck. Consider taking part in either of these studies.

Extra Prayer Partner forms can be found in the Gathering Area next to the box where the completed forms should be deposited. Consider being part of this program. It is open to all adult members of the congregation. Names will be exchanged following the worship service TODAY!

Board of Stewardship’s Food for Thought - God’s love is the energizing power so essential to every life. Christ’s love summons us to a secure and happy life of repentance, forgiveness, and sanctification. “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that One died for all, therefore all died. And He died for all that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him Who died for them and was raised again” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). Because of God’s love, we put away all idols which the devil, the world, and our own sinful nature place before us. That love causes us to put duties before pleasures, to love God and our neighbors.

Betty Sielschott is October’s coordinator for Meals of Grace. If you know of someone who could benefit from this ministry, please contact Betty at 724-3946.

If you receive the Witness currently, but no longer wish to subscribe, that also needs to be known. The subscriptions automatically renew unless information is sent to them otherwise. Friedheim will be billed at a later date. If writing a check, please make it payable to Zion, Friedheim. Thanks for your help!

If you can help with these tasks, please contact Pastor Dahling by Sunday, December 2.

If your business or if you know of a business that might be interested, please con-tact a member of the committee—Dave & Teri Conrad, Mike & Denise Conrad, Al & Shirley Hormann, and Zacha-ry & Heather Stoppenhagen.

This is a free program with residents remaining in the program for a significant amount of time. October Zionews) for the requested items. Boxes can be found in the Gathering Area for these contributions.

Please note that there are two food drives during the month of October – one for Compassion-ate Ministries and the other for A Friend’s House. The collection point for the LYF drive is the Parish Hall; for A Friend’s House, boxes are in the Gathering Area.

The Readings – Intentions for the Family

Genesis 2:18-25 – God intends husbands and wives to be one – The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Hebrew 2:1-14 – God intends the family of humankind to be a family in Christ - We must pay more careful attention, there-fore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every vio-lation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salva-tion, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. It is not to angels that he has sub-jected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet.” In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—

Mark 10:2-16 – God intends marriage to be lifelong – Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” “What did Moses command you?” he replied. They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certifi-

cate of divorce and send her away.” “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He an-swered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.” People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
