In ourstudies of the effec t of zinc def iciency ontens ile s trength w e found significant dif-ferences betw een the str ength of zinc defi-diem and I )aim-fed! contr ol w ounds after 12day s, w hereas the d!ifler ences wer e not sig-ni fican thy different 7 day s postoperativ e .We, ther efor e, measur ed tensile str engthof wounds of normal zinc-supplenmentedanimals 1 2 day s postoperativ e.

    It seems unlike ly to us that treatment ofa normal int!iv idual w ith zinc w ill im - se ile ahing . We stiggest that ind!iv iduals(men or animals) that demonstr ate im-proved healing subsequent to zinc them--apy ar e r elatively zinc de fic ient and havebeen rece iv iimg a (lie t marg inal inincprio r to the institutio n of therapy . It mayi)e that local tis sue i-equirements for z incaie increased! during healing and that in-adequate d!ie tary intake beco ines cruc ialin this situation.

    SU M M A R Y

    The r ate of closur e of d!efects inhe in-tegum ent (stii-g ical or thermal) and thetensile streng th o f healing w ounds aree-creased! by z inc deficiency in the i-at.

    Zinc supplem entatio n o f no rmal ratsw ill not improv e the rate of c losure or thetensile s trength of w ounds inhe integu-ment.
