III. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

ThefollowingitemsmaybeaddedtoanyoftheLASorHSSSystems.

A. Model LAS-FLB

Bracketsaretobemountedontopsurfaceofpivotsupportcasting(item4,page14andpages25, 27&28).Foldingladderbracket(FLBorFLBA)mustbeorderedinadditiontotheLAS-FLBcastings. Thisoptionallowsyoutocarryafoldingladderinadditiontoyourladdersorhardsleeves.

B. Model HSS-TMC

Traymountingcastingsallowyoutocarryonelengthofhardsleeveinadditiontoyourladders (LAS)ortwolengthsofhardsleeve(HSS).ThesecastingsmountontopoftheLAS-FLBcastings, whichmustalsobeorderedwiththisoption(itemH3,page24andpages25,26&27)alongwithtray mounthardware(HSS-TMH)anda10foottray(HSS-SAT-10).

Note: Failure to mount the hard sleeve tray using our tray mount casting (HSS-TMC) and tray mount hardware (HSS-TMH) will void your warranty. See Figure 13, page 25 for mounting information.

C. Model LAS-FLB/PPMB

ThissquaretubemountmayalsobeusedinconjunctionwiththeLAS-FLBcastings.Thisoption allowsmountingofpikepolemountingbracketsinadditiontofoldingladderbrackets.Maynotbeused ifoptionDisused(Figure18,page28).

D. Model PPMB-

Pikepolemountingbracketsmaybeattacheddirectlyusingpre-drilledholesonthetopsideofthe insidearmcastings(item2,page14andFigure19,page28).Eithersingleordoublemountsmaybe used. Refer to the current ZICO catalog to order the pike pole mounting brackets required. This option may not be used if option C is selected.

E. 1-1/2" Spacer Set (P/N 3097-250-000)

InsomeinstancestheLadderAccessSystemsmustberaiseduptoaccommodateextra-wide ladders.Whenthisoccurs,asetoffour1-1/2"highspacerswillberequired(item57,page14)for propermountingoftheladders.Requiredwheneverthe27"longchannel(item54,page14)isneeded (seeChart3,page18).

F. Model LAS-LGK

LadderGuardKitcontainsonetubeofepoxyandtwostainlesssteelguards.Theguardsmaybe attachedtotheladderrungstopreventwearandpossibledamageastheresultofthelockinghandle's contactwiththerung(seeFigure30,page39).

G. Model LLAS-MLS or Model LLAS-BHM-MLS

TheManualLockingSystem(Figure24,page33)providesapositivemeansofretainingthe ladders.ThebasecastingfortheLASSystemwaschangedtoaddanewhighercentersectionto accommodatealockingsystem.WestartedshippingLASSystemswiththenewbasecastingon March23,1998.LAS-BHMSystemshavebeenusinganewbasecastingsinceSeptember16,1998. Thelockmustbede-activatedpriortooperatingtheelectricalcontrol.Thisisdonebypullingoutward onthestrap(item99,page33)orpushingbackonthehandle(item77,page34).

H. Model LLAS-ELS or Model LLAS-BHM-ELS

TheElectricLockingSystem(Figure27,page36)isactivatedbypressingdownontheoperating switchallowingthesmallelectricactuatorstoopenthelockingmechanisms.Afteramomentarydelay, themainelectricactuatorslowertheSystem.Theelectriclockingsystemmayalsobeoperated manually(seepage36).

IV. GENERAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION

TheLadderAccessSystemwasdesignedforladdersmeetingthecurrentNFPA1931standard.Systemsaccommodatemostladdercombinations.However,forladdersover35feetorwithtormentorpoles,contactZiamaticCorp.toascertainiftheymaybeusedwithanAccessSystem.Combinations(seepage18)36,44,53,63,72,80,126,128,129,130,132,133,144,152,154,157,158,and159requireladdermountsinexcessof12 inches. Some of these combinations may be accommodated by adding spacers behind the ladder mount and retainerhandlesupport,butthisincreasesthemountingdepthandtheladdersmayprotrudeexcessivelybeyondthesideofthevehicle.Wedonotrecommendmountingoftheseladders.

Note: The weight of ladders and/or hard sleeves may not exceed 300 pounds with any of the Ladder Access Systems. We recommend the manual or electric locking systems (see pages 33 through 38) be used whenever a hard sleeve tray is mounted over the LAS or HSS System or apparatus routinely navigates rough/uneven terrain.

A. Mounting Points

TheLadderAccessdevicesshouldbeplacedsymetricallyinreferencetotheladder.Thesame numberofrungsshouldextendpasteachladdersupport(page23).Thiswillensurethatbothunitsare liftingapproximatelythesameweight(ifthisisnotpossible,contactZiamaticCorp.).Boltholeshave beenprovidedonboththeverticalandhorizontalmountingsurfaces.Althoughthedevicemaybe securelymountedfromthehorizontalsurfaceonly,itisagreatadvantagetobeabletousemounting boltsontheverticalsurfaceaswell.One-halfinchthickbackingplatesshouldbeusedifusingonly verticalorhorizontalholesetsformounting(seeSectionV.A.,lastparagraph).BulkHeadMountunits musthavebackingplatesandcanonlybemountedtoaverticalsurface.

Allboltsshouldhavereinforcementstructureaddedunderneaththemountingsurfacewhere possible.Channelorrectangulartubeshouldbeusedinsteadofflatplateasreinforcement.If aluminumplateisused,itshouldbe1/2"thick(seepage21).

B. Electrical Circuit

Thecontrolswitchshouldbeamomentarydouble-poledouble-throwexterior30ampswitch.We provideaswitchwitheachsystem.Itshouldbeplacedinsuchapositionthattheoperatorhasfullview oftheQUIC-LIFTSystemandpersonnelthatmightcomeincontactwithit.Usingwiresofequal lengthbetweenpowersourceandactuatorswillhelptokeeptheactuatorsrunninginsynchronization (seepage22forwiringdiagrams).

Several"LockOut"circuitsmaybeconsideredtopreventaccidentsfromoccurring.Anideal"Lock Out"systemwouldonlypermitoperationwhentheignitionswitchison,thetransmissionisinpark,and any obstructing compartment doors are shut. Because of the higher amperage required to operate the QUIC-LIFTSystem,aseparate"LockOut"circuitshouldbeused(seeelectricaldiagramsonpage22). The"LockOut"circuitshouldbeseparatedfromtheQUIC-LIFTSystemcircuitbyarelay.Thiswill preventdamagetotheexistingwiringsystem.TheQUIC-LIFTSystemcircuitshouldbeprotectedbya 30ampfuse.

NFPA1901-96standardrequiresflashinglightstobeprovided,facingfrontandrearofthe apparatus.LightsmustflashwhenevertheSystemisoutofthestoredposition.Theflashinglightkit (modelLAS-FLK)wasaddedtoallSystemsbeginningJanuary1,1997(seepages29&30).Priorto that,weprovidedanaudio-visualalarmandrelay.Theaudiovisualalarmmaystillbeorderedasan option(seemodelAVA,P/N8047-125-000incatalog).

Note: 24 volt systems do not include a Flashing Light Kit.

C. Synchronization of Actuators

Asnotedunder"TroubleShooting"(SectionVI.C.)allelectricactuatorsaretimed,underload,and thetimesarerecorded.Ifyouexperienceanyproblemsassociatedwiththeelectricactuators,wewill requiretheserialnumberoffofyourdevice(seepages15and17forlocationofserialnumber).

ItisimportanttotheoperationoftheQUIC-LIFTSystemthattheactuatorsworkinsynchro- nization.Theactuatorsmaybeoutofsyncaconsiderableamountbeforebindingoccurs,however, reducingtheoccurenceofthiswillincreasethelifeoftheactuatorsandpreventdamageorweartothe ladders.Keepingtheloadevenlydistributedonthetwodeviceswillhelptokeeptheactuators runninginsynchronization(Figure9,page23).

Do not permit personnel to hang, sit or stand on ladders or hose while stored on the QUIC LIFT System.Iftheunitisoverloaded,theinternalclutchwillslipandpreventdamagetothe actuators.

Whentheoperatorraisesorlowerstheunit,heshouldletitrununtilhehearsbothclutchesstartto slipsothattheactuatorsre-synchronizeandarereadytorunintheoppositedirection.

WehaveextensivelytestedourQUIC-LIFTSystemandhavefoundthenormallifetobeinexcess of5,000cycleswithoutfailure.Withreasonablecareandmaintenance,yourQUIC-LIFTSystemshould giveyoumanyyearsofexcellentservice.

V. INSTALLING THE LADDER ACCESS SYSTEM

A. Preparation for Mounting

Check both units to verify they have matching serial numbers.

Planandlayouttheentireinstallationbeforemakinganycutsordrillingholesinthebodyofthe fireapparatus.Thiswillkeep"outofservice"timetoaminimumandalsohelptominimizemistakes. SeeElectricalSystem(SectionB,page7)beforeanyholesaredrilledintotheapparatus.

Laythetwounitsontheshelfoftheapparatustothatyoucanseewhereholeswillberequiredfor themountingbolts.Thereshouldbesufficientlysizedflatsurfaceunderneaththemountingholes,free ofseamsandobstructionswheretheboltswillpassthrough.Raisetheladdersnearthetwounitsto determinewheretheywilllaywheninstalled.Theladdersmustbeevenlysupportedbyeachunit(the samenumberofrungsshouldextendontheoutersideofeachladdersupport).

Whentheladderisraisedandloweredinthisposition,itshouldclearprotrudingobjectsonthe apparatussuchasemergencylights,handrails,etc.Makesurethatwhentheladdersareintheup position they do not obstruct cross lays or hose reels.

Measurethe"resting"depthofyourladdercombinationtodeterminehowfaryourladderswill protrudeoutfromthehosebedwall(adddepthof6"fortheretractedLASSystem).Intheeventthat theactuatorretainercasting(item48,page14)orinnerarmcasting(item2,page14)comeintocontact withthestiffeningribatthetopofthehosebed,youmayhavetonotchoutthestiffeningribtorecess thedevice(seepage20).Intheeventthatthestiffeningribisnotched,theexposedmetalsurfaces shouldbepaintedandcoveredwithanedgeguardmaterial.Inaddition,andinparticular,ifthe stiffeningribisnotched,youmaywishtoaddabackingplate(page21)ontheinsidesurfaceofthehose bedwall.Theplatewillreinforcethehosebedwallandprovideagoodmountingsupportforthe QUIC-LIFTSystem.Theedgesshouldberoundedoff,onthesidenexttothehose,andflatheadbolts should be used to mount the plate.

Bolts3/8"orlargershouldbeusedtomountthebasecastingstothefireapparatus.Whenthebases willonlybemountedtothehosebedwalloronlymountedtotheshelfdeck,1/2"boltsshouldbeused withsubstantialbackingplates(page21)andsupports.IfyouareinstallingtheQUIC-LIFTdevicesto onlyonesurface,wesuggestyoucontactoneofourtechniciansbeforebeginning.

B. Electrical System

Nowthatyouaresureofyourmountingposition,youmaybegintolayoutyourelectricalwiring (pages22,29,37and38).Atthistime,itisagoodideatoremovetheunitsfromtheshelfand"C" clampthemtoatablesothattheunitswillswingoutawayfromthetablewhenlowered.Unitsshould bemountedthesamedistancebackfromedgeoftableastheywouldbeontheshelfofyourapparatus. Besurethetableissecuredbyaddingacounterweighttotheothersidebeforeloweringtheunits.Place laddersontotheladdermountcastings(item7,page14)justastheywillbestoredontheapparatus. Determinewherewirescanberunsotheywillnotbevisiblefromtheoutsideoftheapparatus.We recommend all electrical connections be soldered as this method is superior to crimp connections. Measuretherequiredrunlengthsofeachwire(seepage22forproperwirediameter).

Makeupawiringharnessusingwireslongerthantherequiredrunlengths.Temporarilymakeall wireconnectionssoyoucantestthesystem.Withthetableproperlysecured,youshouldbeableto operatetheunitswiththeladdersorhardsleevesattached.Besuretheladderswillcleartheedgeofthe tablebeforedrillinganyholesintheapparatus.Thewiringdiagramfortheflashinglightsmaybefound onpage29.

C. Mounting Suggestions

A"WARNING"label(partnumber3097-105-149,item49,page14)issuppliedwitheach QUIC-LIFTSystem.Thepressuresensitivelabelmustbemountedbytheelectricalcontrolswitch.All apparatusoperatorsmustbeinstructedtokeepareainfrontofladdersclearofpersonnelwhenthe QUIC-LIFTSystemisbeingraisedorlowered.

Beforestartingtheinstallation,youshouldmakesureyouhaveallnecessarytoolsandmaterials. Thisshouldincludematchingtouch-uppaint,edgetrim(forcutouts),fenderprotectorclothsand removabletape(toprotectpaint),necessaryhardware,wireconnectors,cableties,burrremover,vacuum cleaner(formetalfilings),edgeguards(forwiring),drills,drillgun,wrenches,stepladders,etc.Besure toremovethehosefromthehosebed.

Followingthesesimpleinstructionsshouldmakeyourinstallationeasyandprofessional.

VI. TROUBLE SHOOTING

Allunitsaretestedafterfinalassemblytoensureproperoperationandadjustment.Nofurtheradjustmentsshouldberequiredunlessexcessvibrationisnoted(seeVI.D.,page9).

A. Actuator "Creeping Down"

AnindicatorlightmaybeinstalledinthecabofyourvehicletowarnthedriverwhentheSystemis outofthestoredposition.Ifthislightcomesonwhilethevehicleisinmotion,itmaybeanindicator thatoneoftheelectricactuatorsis"creepingdown".Theactuatorwillnotdropsuddenlybutthedriver shouldkeepaneyeontheSystemuntilhereacheshisdestination.Thentheswitchmaybeactivatedto retract the System to the stored position.

Undercertainroadconditions,thefrequencyofvibrationsmaycausethefrictionbrakewithinthe electricactuatortoslip.Thisinturnmayallowthemotortoturnandthewormgeartoretractor"back drive".Thesameproblemmayoccurwhenahardsleeveismountedabovetheladdersand/orhard sleeves.

IfyourSystem"creepsdown",wesuggestyouaddthemanuallockingsystem(Figure25,page34) orelectriclockingsystem(Figure27,page36)toyourSystem(seeIII.G.&H.,page3).

B. Ladder Wider Than Ladder Support

Iftheproperladdercombinationisspecifiedatthetimeofordering,thisproblemshouldnotoccur. Thestandardsupportchannel(item54,page14)is25-1/4"long.Wecanalsoprovidealongersupport channel(partnumber3097-105-155)whichis27"long.SeeChart3,page18,forcombinations requiringthe27"longchannel.Spacerset(partnumber3097-250-000)mustbeorderedwiththese combinations.

C. One Actuator Running Two Or More Seconds Slower Than The Other

Allactuatorsaretimed,underload,atthefactorywiththetimesrecorded.Wematchupelectric actuatorswithasclosetoequaltimesaspossiblewhenassemblingaQUIC-LIFTSystem.Whenone actuatorisrunningmorethantwosecondsbehindtheother,itisnormallyduetosometypeof resistanceinthewiringsystem.Checkallwireconnectionstomakesuretheyaresecure.Makesureto ratchetbothactuatorsattheendofeachupanddowncycle.Iftheyarestillgreatlyoutofsync,after checkingthewiringandratchetingunitsattheendofeachcycle,youmayswitchtheactuatorsto confirmiftheproblemisinthewiringsystem.Afterremovingtheladders,removethenut/bolt assembly(items10,16and42,page14)toremovetheactuator.Switchthetwoactuatorsand reassemble.Iftherearunitactuatorwasoriginallyrunningslowerandthisunitisstillrunningslower thentheproblemisinthewiring.Iftheproblemswitchesfromrearunitactuatorrunningslowertofront unitrunningsloweraftertheswitch,thentheproblemmaybetheactuator.

D. Excess Vibration May Cause Failure Of One Or More Castings

A"WARNING"label(partnumber3097-105-158,item58,page14)hasbeenattachedtoeachset ofcastings.If,afterinstallingtheSystemandladders,younoteexcessivemovementoftheladders whileoperatingthevehicle,checkthefollowing(referringtodrawingsonpages11&15andbillof materialsonpage14andinformationprovidedbelow).Removetheladdersbeforeproceeding.

1. ActuatorRetainerAdjustment(seeFigure1,page11)

a. Checkhexheadbolts(items46and47)toseeifeitheroneisloose.Ifoneorbothareloose, proceedasfollows.Iftheyaretight,proceedtoSectionVI.D.2.

b. Toadjust(refertoChart1,page14foritemnumbersinparenthesis):

1. Lowersystemapproximatelyone-halfwaydownandremoveladders.

2. Loosenlockingnut(6)andturnhexheadbolt(5)allthewayintotheinsidearm casting (2).

3. Snipandremovelockingwire(53).

4. Raisetheunituntiltheelectricactuatorisfullyextendedandtheclutchratchets.Inthe raised,orstoredposition,theinsidearmcastingshouldbealmostparallelwithhosebed wall(actually1to2degreeslessthanparallel).

5. Lowerunittoprovidebetteradjustmentaccess.Loosenjackbolt(46)andadjusttension bolt (47).

• Toincreaseoutwardlean,turnoutontensionbolt(47) • Todecreaseoutwardlean,turninontensionbolt(47)

6. Re-tighten jack bolt (46) and raise unit completely to check adjustment.

7. Whenbothboltsaretightandtheoutwardleanoftheinsidearmcasting(2)is1to2 degrees,theadjustmentoftheactuatorretaineriscomplete.

8. Replacesafetywire.

4. Lowerthedevicepartiallyandturnhexheadboltoutanadditional1turn.Holdboltin this position and tighten locking nut.

Whenthedevicesarereturnedtotheupright,closedposition,theyshouldberigidandnot movewithhandpressure.

E. Emergency Operation

IftheSystemfailstolowerfromthestoredposition,donotattempttorepairuntiltheunitis returned to the station.

IftheSystemfailstoraisefromthedownposition,thefollowingemergencyproceduremaybe used:

1. Removetheladdersfortransportbacktothestation.

2. Withonepersonholdingtheladdermountcasting(7),asecondpersonshouldremovethe topshoulderbolt(10),nut(16)andwasher(42)thatretainstheactuator(23).

3. Liftunittostoredpositionandsecureinplace.

4. Replaceshoulderbolt(10),nut(16)andwasher(42),sonottogetlost.

5. Followsameprocedureforthesecondunit.

CHART 8.LAS PROBLEM SOLVING

PROBLEM:

Units are running out of synchronization.* Make sure the serial numbers of the units match. These units aretimedaspairs.Twodifferentunitswillnotrunatexactlythe same speed. Units are not interchangeable. Do not use the number on the actuator but on the base castings.

* Checktomakesuretheladdersareevenlyplacedonthesystem. There should be the same number of rungs hanging off each end of the system.

* Withanelectronictester,measurethevoltagejustbeforethe actuators.Theactuatorsshouldhavequickdisconnectclips aboutsixinchesbeforethemotor.Ifthevoltagediffersby 0.5voltsormore,adjustmentswillhavetobemadetoyour wiring.

* Checkthewiretotheactuatorsforpropergauge.Gaugesize dependsonlengthofwire.Consultaqualifiedelectricianfor gaugesize.

* Wiresleadingfromthepowersourcetoeachactuatorshouldbe thesamelengthwithinafewfeet.

* Followthewirepathfromthepowersourcetotheelectric actuators.Lookfordoorinterlockswitches(switchesthat preventtheunitfromoperatingifadoorisopen)thatarewired directlythroughthepowerwire.Theseswitchesarerarelyrated fortheamperageneededtooperatethesystem.Thiswillhavea majoradverseeffectonthesystem.Formostapplications 10gaugewireissufficient.Powermustberundirectlytothe switch,thendirectlytotheactuator.Switchesmustbewired usingrelaysratedforatleast30amps.

* Unitsmakeaclickingnoisewhentheyreachtheendofthe stroke.

Theunitswillneverrunatexactlythesamespeed.During normal operation the unit should be run until both begin ratcheting.Theactuatorshavebuilt-inclutchesandthenoise that occurs at the end of the stroke is not causing any damage to the units.

SOLUTION:

UseonlyLASsystemswithmatchingserial numbers. Call Ziamatic if serial numbers do not match.

Spaceladdersevenlyorcounter-weightthe lighter side.

SeeBelow

Wiremustbereplacedifunder-sized.

Haveaqualifiedtechnicianaddwiretotheshorterlengthuntiltheyareeven.

Haveaqualifiedelectricianre-wirethesystem so that the door interlock switchesarewiredthroughrelays.

This is a normal feature of the actuators.
