On behalf of the Georgia Executive Board of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority

Inc I am extremely pleased and thrilled to bring to you the following

edition of The Peachbuzz

I am grateful that our 23rd International Grand Basileus Sheryl P Under-

wood has given me the opportunity to serve the Great State of Georgia as State Director I am honored to lead a state filled with exceptional

chapters dedicated to unity and exemplifying the principles our Founders

initiated

During my tenure as State Director we have already achieved several

major goals We have chartered a new chapter in the county of Forsyth

Psi Rho Zeta Welcome to the Sorors of this chapter along with the two new youth groups of Americus The Sorors of Georgia came together and contributed heavily to several national signature sorority initiatives includ-

ing Z-HOPE Storkrsquos Nest March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society We also played a major role in

the Martin Luther King Jr National Memorial Unveiling in Washington DC and the Stevie Wonder Toys for Tots campaign

One of my primary goals is to contribute to the ―Burning of the Mortgage by 2012 I charge the Sorors Ami-cae and Youth of the State of Georgia to raise at least $50000 to help finally end the mortgage for our National

Headquarters Based on the caliber of work Irsquove seen I know we can do it

Soror Betty T Lumpkin was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc in

1953 through the Beta Chapter at

Morris Brown College in Atlanta

Georgia Soror Betty T Lumpkin later moved to Macon Georgia and

became a Charter Member of Epsi-

lon Tau Zeta Chapter in Macon Georgia January 1956

Soror Lumpkin served her beloved sorority for over 50 years and has

held past leadership positions such as

Basileus of Epsilon Tau Zeta Chap-ter Chapter Amicae Advisor and is

a past State of Georgia Amicae Co-

ordinator Soror Lumpkin was a

2009 Inductee into the Zeta Phi Beta

Sorority Incorporated State of Geor-gia Hall of Fame and a 2006 Charter

Member of the Zeta Legacy Club of

the Southeastern Region

Soror Betty T Lumpkin has had sev-

eral leadership roles with the GREA

REA member of the Board of Direc-tors for Middle Georgia Girl Scouts

Inc and a member of Phi Delta

Kappa Soror Lumpkin was a previ-ous Educational Director for the

Headstart Program and a member of

Morris Brown Alumni Association She was a Senior Cherry Blossom

Princess in 2007 Soror Lumpkin

was featured in ―Standing on Their

Shoulders African American

Women

Soror Betty T Lumpkin was a men-

tor and heavily involved in the Mer-cer University Grandkids Program

Soror enjoyed spending time read-

ing walking biking traveling gar-

dening and helping those in need Soror Lumpkin always represented

Epsilon Tau Zeta Chapter at all

Boule regional conferences and state conferences

Soror Lumpkin is sadly missed by all of the Sorors in Epsilon Tau Zeta

Chi Pi Zeta Chapter Hinesville GA teamed up with the Ladies of Rho

Nu Omega (AKA) and Hinesville

Alumnae (DST) on September 18

2010 to host a Western Dance in support of the Dorchester Academy

The Dorchester Academy was founded in 1869 by the American

Missionary Association (now the

United Church of Christ) as a school for freed slaves By 1917 the fully-

accredited high school had an enroll-

ment of 300 students Although the

academic program ended in the 1940rsquos when a consolidated school

for black youth was built in nearby

Riceboro GA the pioneering spirit did not In the 1940s the Dorchester

Cooperative Center was established

and the Dorchester Academy would become an institute for community

development political and social

change The Liberty County Citi-zenrsquos Council founded in 1946

helped registered and organize Afri-

can-American voters Nearly 20

years later Dr Martin Luther King Jr and other key figures in the civil

rights movement including Dr Ralph

Abernathy Andrew Young Dr Fred Shuttlesworth prepared for ―Project

C which would be later memorial-

ized as the infamous Birmingham march one of the first major victo-

ries in the Civil Rights move-

ment Today the Dorchester Acad-

emy is a National Landmark and serves as an African-American his-

tory museum and community center

and is in the process of developing a community educational and research

center Additionally plans are in

place to renovate the beautiful Greek revival style boysrsquo dormitory one of

the only original Dorchester Acad-

emy buildings that remain

Chi Pi Zeta raised over $500 while

the collective efforts of all three so-

rorities raised over $3000 All the proceeds raised from this event went

to the Dorchester Academy

The Ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Soror-ity Inc ndash Chi Pi Zeta Chapter sup-

ported Prematurity Awareness

Month by hosting a 5K RunWalk on

Saturday November 13 2010 be-ginning and ending at the Liberty

County Courthouse

Chi Pi Zeta raised over $600 to do-

nate to the March of Dimes in their

quest to continue to educate women on the importance of healthy preg-

nancies They would also like to give

thanks to all their sponsors March of

Dimes the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc

Amicae Lottie Jones and Sarah Cook are volunteers a Vincent Village for

Senior Citizens They prepare a

weekly meal for the participants and

enjoy fellowship among the group During the year they assist with

―outings and shopping trips once a

month

them to start preparing now to take

on national leadership roles as they are ―our future leaders she said

Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc and Epsilon Beta Chapter of




The Kappa Delta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc (Paine College

Augusta GA) placed third overall in

Paine Collegersquos annual homecoming

step show Feb 12 The chapter was the only sorority to

place and came in third behind Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi who

placed first and second respectively

The chapter used a school girl theme

which was a hit with the audience Following their performance they

received several compliments about their show

This is the second time in three years

that the chapter came out as the top

sorority in the homecoming step show

Workshop targeting the communityrsquos

youth All youth in attendance were

involved in several educational ses-sions including Youth with Drugs in

the Community and Society Fat or

Fit Careers and Music-Display Your Talent The workshop was

well attended

Founderrsquos Day on January 29 The

theme for the occasion was Promot-

ing Empowerment through Unity Commitment and Sisterhood The

In the fall 2010 Phi Chi Zeta de-cided to AMP it up for kids What

does that mean After reviewing the

needs of the community the chapter

decided that developing community partnerships that focused on provi-

sions for kids would be the focus for

this year Zeta Phi Beta partnered with the Clarke County Teen Matters

clinic to hostchaperone home foot-

ball games for the Cedar Shoals Jag-uars These afterschool activities

gave students a structured social en-

vironment to hang out with their

friends as well as the opportunity to

receive literature about health related teen issues In addition the chapter

members volunteered at Barnett

Shoals Elementary school during

their annual BSE Fall Festival The sisterhood assisted with the set up as

well as supervised various games

and activities Most recently Phi Chi Zeta has decided to assist in pro-

viding necessary food items to chil-

dren in the Clarke County commu-nity The Junior League of Athens

partnered with the Clarke County

School District support Food to

Kids Food to Kids is a program that

provides needy children with neces-sary food items for the weekend

Each month a different food item is

collected Phi Chi Zeta supports this

worthy endeavor by collecting the various food items for the month In

addition during the Christmas sea-

son Phi Chi Zeta also donated Christmas toys to children who re-

ceived housing services at the area

homeless shelter The Ladies of Phi Chi Zeta are definitely AMPing it up

for kids

Epsilon Tau Zeta Macon was the only Greek Lettered organization in

the Middle Georgia area recognized

as a local sponsor for the March of

Dimes Walk for Babies for 2010 and 2011 The chapter name was on the

back of the T-shirts on the map loca-

tor and placed proudly in front of one of last water station tables A

host of blue and white (Zetas and

Amicae) cheered and passed out wa-ter to welcome the walkers at the

completion of the 2010 March for

Babies Walk Donations were made

to the Middle Georgia Walk by Omega Mu (Mercer University)

The Zeta Amicae of Columbus Georgia was organized in September 1963 and

chartered on February 2 1964 with

eleven young ladies

The purpose of the Amicae is to lend as-

sistance to Zeta activities to promote

good public relations among Zeta and other women in the community to make

non-Greek women feel closer to the pro-

gram of a Greek organization and to as-

Georgia observed their annual Founders Day on Saturday January

15 2011 The theme for this year

was Reflecting the Past Rekindling those we lost and Renewing our

commitment The entire Blue and

White Family (Zetas Amicae Sig-mas Undergraduates Archonettes

and Sigma Beta Youth) celebrated

this historic day with a luncheon

hosted at Holsey Chapels Allen Paige III Complex The keynote

speaker for this occasion was their

own Dr Eunice S Thomas 19th In-ternational President of Zeta Phi

Beta Sorority Dr Thomas chal-

lenged both organizations to be the best they can be The topic of her

address was To Whom It Con-cerns Dr Thomas challenged both

organizations to use this time during

this last decade of the century to

forge ahead separately and collec-tively to achieve our purpose of be-

ing She also paid tribute to our

founders and those men and women who were instrumental in initiating

signature projects for their organiza-

tions

Special presentations were made by

Soror Myra Reese State Director of

Georgia Chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Soror Dr Eunice S Tho-

mas and Soror Mary Strozier-

Weaver were presented -The Drum Major for Justice Award for numer-

ous hours of volunteer service to the

community This award is an initia-tive by President Barak Obama

Sorors Thomas and Strozier-Weaver received a gold pin and a

letter from President Obama The

Sigma Man of the Year was pre-

sented to Brother Clifford Barrett Plaques were also presented to Dr

Henry Cook and Dr Barnwell

Sigma scholarships will be awarded in recognition of Dr Cook to stu-

dents pursuing their studies in the

field of medicine or science and in recognition of Dr Barnwell in the

field of education The Sigmas pre-

sented the Culture of Service

Award to the House of Mercy It was truly an afternoon of fellow-

ship enjoyed by all Soror Malinda

talion Intelligence and Security Offi-cer for JROTC She also served as

squad leader for the JROTC Drill

of DECA vice president of the Na-tional Honor Society and Senior

Class Treasurer During her tenure

at Spencer Jamika received several awards to include the following

Jamika attends Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she serves as the sec-

retary for the youth group Every

summer she volunteers as a teacher for Vacation Bible School In

her community Jamika volunteers as

a peer helper with the GREAT Sum-

mer Program and Thrivent which is a youth group that restores and pol-

ishes selected homes in low standard

neighborhoods Jamika logged a total of 102 volunteer hours at the

Muscogee County Sheriffrsquos Office

during 2007 and 2008 During the summer of 2009 Ms Smith com-

pleted an internship with the WIC

Center at the Columbus Health De-

partment which totaled about 85 hours

Ms Smith was accepted to five col-leges but will attend Fort Valley

State University Her plans are to

major in Nutritional Science and

upon graduation from Fort Valley serve as an officer in the United

States Army as a Registered Dieti-

tian Ms Smithrsquos desire to become a Dietitian is personal because she has

seen the impact of diabetes on family

members and Americans as a whole and would like to help make a differ-

ence in this world

Epsilon Eta Zeta wishes Ms Jamika Smith much success in her future

endeavors

Ms Najah TeRae Petties a graduate of GW Carver High School During

her tenure at this magnet school Na-

jah completed many Advanced Placement and Honors classes

While maintaining a GPA of 30 she

was also involved in many extracur-ricular and community service activi-

ties which included serving as Presi-

dent of the Student Council Treas-

urer for AHSHOSA (Allied Health ClubHealth Occupation Students of

America) and a competing member

of the Academic Decathlon Team Najahrsquos community service is just as

impressive as her resume Ms Pet-

ties volunteered numerous hours at

the Azalea Trace Nursing Home par-ticipated with the Carver High Blood

Drive Walk-a-Thon for Muscular

Dystrophy and planted trees in the community

Najah was accepted to Albany State University where she plans to major

in Pre-Med Biology and later on be-

come a physician Her passion for

science and desire to help others in-fluenced her decision to pursue this

career choice Epsilon Eta Zeta is

proud of their scholarship recipient who is the daughter of Mr Reginald

Petties and Wanda Green of Colum-

bus Georgia



Owens Receives a Scholarship Award Submitted by Beta Rho Zeta Chapter mdashFort Valley GA

The Middle Georgia Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta Soror-

ity Inc held their annual Joint Foun-

derrsquos Day Luncheon on January 15

2011 on the campus of The Fort Val-ley State University Brother Willie

Batts delivered the inspirational mes-

sage and the Scholarship was awarded to Leanitra Owens LeAni-

tra Owens is currently a senior at

Peach County High School and a student at Fort Valley State Univer-

sity She is an honor roll student at

both the high school and the univer-sity Her parents Gordon and Arnita

Owens have always taught her and

her two sisters Arlese and Saraya to

be high achievers LeAnitra attends Shiloh Baptist

Church in Fort Valley GA and is

involved in many activities including tennis and she is currently a member

of the Zeta Phi Beta Archonettes of

Fort Valley and serves as vice-president LeAnitra is an ambitious

person with many goals in life that

she would like to accomplish one day One of her personal goals is to

become an entrepreneur and open a

child care center for the underprivi-

leged because of her love for chil-dren The luncheon was well at-

tended by many Sigmas Zetas local

state and regional officers guests and youth We were also graced with

the presence of Regional Director

Triumphant Sorors of Beta Rho Zeta Submitted by Beta Rho Zeta Chapter mdashFort Valley GA

Beta Rho Zeta Chapter of Fort Val-ley GA lost two inspirational and

seasoned members of its chapter

who have gained membership in the

Omega Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta So-rority Inc

Soror Marion Bryant transitioned on November 1 2010 after 104 years of

life on earth Over half of those

years she was a member of Beta Rho Zeta Chapter in Fort Valley

where she was a charter member

Soror Bryant was the widow of the

late Mr Henry Bryant and she worked in the public schools of Fort

Valley teaching Math Chemistry

and Physics at the Henry A Hunt High School and Peach County High

School until her retirement in

1972Hunt Educational and Cultural Center in Fort Valley was organized

in their honor

Soror Evelyn McGhee departed her earthly life on January 21 2011 at

the age of 81 She joined Beta Rho

counties of Macon and Houston Not

only a Zeta she was also a member of Turner Chapter 270 Order of

Eastern Star Georgia Association of

Educators and Fort Valley State Uni-

versity National Alumni Association Her influence was so strong that both

her daughters and all of her grand-

daughters went on to become educa-tors She leaves a Zeta legacy of

daughter Frances Caldwell and state

officer granddaughters - Shaniqua and Sekemia Caldwell These angels

are truly missed and will always hold

a place in the heart of Beta Rho Zeta

ticipated in the churchrsquos college fair

which was held October 23 2010 They distributed FAFSA forms and answered

general questions about financial aid

More than 500 students attended this

event In January the chapter assisted

the church in a financial aid planning

seminar Rho Epsilon Zeta recently

awarded a $500 book scholarship to

Kennesaw native Kyana White who is a

member of the church Ms White is at-

tending the University of Georgia

Cobb County declared Rho Epsilon Zeta and Mableton Elementary

School Partners in Education for the

2010-2011 school year Mableton

Elementary is a Title I school with a very diverse ethnicracial makeup

Rho Epsilon Zeta has collaborated with the schoolrsquos PTA in a campus

clean up effort before the start of the

school year Sorors donated school supplies for faculty and staff mem-

bers The chapter has also collected

Box Tops for Education labels in

order to assist the school in earning points towards the purchase of

school equipment In December Zetas participated in the schoolrsquos Jingle Jog a one mile walk promoting physical fitness for students and their families Later

that day Sorors facilitated a candy-cane hunt

Rho Epsilon Zeta is looking forward to dedicating another year of service to

Mableton Elementary

This chapter is small in number but its members are proving it only takes

a few gathered in the name of Zeta

for big things to happen Embracing

the ideals of Zeta the Sigma Omega Zeta Chapter has taken on some big

tasks and completed them success-

fully while never failing to exhibit finer womanhood

In 2010 the sisters of Sigma Omega Zeta stepped up to the challenge of

amending the chapterrsquos constitution

―I donrsquot think any of us were pre-

pared for how challenging amending the chapter bylaws and constitution

would be says chapter president

Soror Andrea Thomas ―We worked hard and diligently and now we have

a constitution that truly meets the

standards of the sorority

The sisters began editing the consti-

tution during a chapter meeting with

Secretary Tanea McKee working hard to put all suggestions into a

workable format for discussion and

vote Amending the constitution proved such a challenge that the la-

dies tabled the project until the chap-

ter retreat The Sorors spent most of the retreat on amending the constitu-

tion and their efforts were not in

vain

The Sorors of Sigma Omega Zeta are

making great strides in service Z-

Hope Coordinator Soror Alina Tillery works tirelessly to locate vol-

unteer opportunities and make sure

the chapter stays abreast of service

Being inspired by members that

have been affected by diabetes the members of the Rho Xi Zeta Chap-ter joined forces with the American Diabetes Association to serve as official volunteer staff and host-esses of the annual Stepping Out to Fight Diabetes Walk Members

volunteered to serve in multiple capacities Duties included but were not limited to registering walkers passing out literature to walkers concerning diabetes serv-

ing food and water as well as col-

lecting cash donations on the day of the walk In addition our chap-ter collectively contributed over $500 towards the fundraising goal of the Stepping Out to Fight Diabe-tes Walk

During the walk which was held on September 25 2010 at Grant Park in Atlanta GA the members got the opportunity to meet Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson

from the hit reality series The Big-

gest Loser Season 9 The couple that collectively lost more than 214 lbs and found love while filming the reality series Members had the opportunity to speak candidly with the contestants and receive advice concerning weight lost Ad-

ditionally it was discovered that Sam is actually a member of the Blue and White Family

As a part of their 2010 Finer Wom-anhood Month Celebration activities

the Sorors and Amicae of Epsilon

Zeta Chapter conducted their

―Annual Cheer Night for the senior residents of the Ashbury-Harrris Ep-

worth Towers retirement facility lo-

cated in Atlanta Georgia

This annual Z-HOPE event has a two

-fold purpose to provide useful in-formation concerning MEDICARE

Diabetes Hypertension Safety or

other topics of interests to the sen-

iors The second purpose is to pro-vide entertainment play games and

present the seniors with tokens of

love (gift bags of toiletries or other

useful household items) Zetas and Amicae also served refreshments and

fellowshipped with the residents

The guest speaker for the event was

A Dwight Danzy Senior Partnership

Specialist with the US Census Bu-reau Mr Danzy gave a presentation

to the seniors about the benefits and

importance of them participating in

the 2010 CENSUS process He also provided brochures and promotional

items to motivate and remind the

seniors to complete the CENSUS

form when they received them in the mail The chapter also presented

each resident with a bookmark cre-

ated just for the event

Epsilon Zeta and their Amicae have

been conducting this event for over 20 years to uplift the spirits of the

residents of Epworth especially

those that have few or no visitors

The Iota Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc has worked

hard to expand on its previous suc-

cesses The Chapter was excited to

have several members to attend the Bouleacute They reported a festive and

informative time with Sorors from

the United States and abroad Zeta is on the forefront of the world and

community activism and service as

we roll out our new health and edu-cation initiatives The Chapter deliv-

ered Thanksgiving baskets to needy

families handed out two scholar-

ships to graduating seniors marched door-to-door handing out Census

forms organized a successful health

fair and even delivered Christmas gifts to needy children and families

just to name a few Iota Eta Zeta is

poised to impact change in our com-

munity and the world around us

Iota Eta Zeta advises the Beta Iota

chapter which is on the campus of Spelman College Beta Iota has had

numerous accomplishments and has

no plans of letting up Beta Iota won the 2010 Student Organization of the

Year Award at Spelman College

Beta Iota is present on the Southeast-

ern Region Honor Roll obtained the State of Georgia Award for highest

GPA for a chapter and also won

first place for Z-Hope points In ad-dition to participating in the Relay

for Life March for Babies and

Storkrsquos Nest Beta Iota delivered

Thanksgiving baskets decorated mu-rals for a childrenrsquos hospital and

even made blankets for the homeless

They are preparing for the State meeting and are planning a Greek

Forum to take place in February

Beta Iota will continue to forge ahead and aspire for the greatness set

before them by our five Pearls

off the new Zeta year on August 28

with a retreat at Mercer University

GA in Macon GA Over 75 youth ranging in age from 4-18 attended

this informative session The youth

were presented information on Es-sential Tools for a Zeta Youth Par-

liamentary Procedures and Self Es-

teem Counts Out of Georgiarsquos 11 youth auxiliaries 7 were represented

with youth and Sororsadvisors The

Zeta Phi Beta Pageant held in Dallas TX at the Boulersquo of Sisterly Love

Southern Style The competition

which included 20 Zeta members from around the worldwas judged in

several areas state costume and in-

troduction beachwear business wear Zeta paraphernalia and formal

wear

To represent the Peach state Shaniqua expressed her creativity in

a green shirt wa Georgia slogan amp

white skirt green visor and green flip-flops all adorned with GA

peaches She topped it off by taking

a bite from a sweet GA peach to con-clude her introduction During

beachwear her finer womanhood

showed in a black white and royal

blue swimsuit wrapped in a royal blue sarong She showed Zeta pride

in a self-designed black tank top with

―1920 in rhinestones and the Zeta shield paired with jeans with

―ZETA written in sequins She was

ready to instruct her 8th grade GA History class in a royal blue and

black skirt suit Last but not least
