The Rural Cemetery is a Santa Rosa treasure. Located on Frank-lin Blvd, the Rural Cemetery is maintained by a group of dedicat-ed volunteers who not only care for the grounds but also bring history to life through storytelling and character acting.

You can learn more about Santa Rosa’s fascinating history during docent-led tours or an evening of “living history” on a Lamplight Tour. You’ll find many interesting stories; such as the tale of Joseph Wood, a hops buyer from New York, who stepped off the eve-ning train at Santa Rosa’s Depot

and checked into his favorite room at the Western Hotel, as he had done so many times in the past. Unfortunately, this time would be his last. At 5:12 in the morning, the west wall fell dur-ing the 1906 Earthquake, crush-ing him in his bed. Local folklore suggests his ghost is periodically spotted at the Flying Goat Café that now occupies that portion of the Western Hotel.

Mr. Wood is just one of over 5,400 residents at the Rural Cemetery, whose stories weave the fabric of Santa Rosa’s past. Join in on a tour, offered June 22

and August 10. Or register for a Lamplight Tour, September 20-21. Call (707) 543-3282 for more information and to register. You won’t be disappointed.

Over 240 pounds of un-used medi-cine have been collected at the Bennett Valley Senior Center since 2012! Sonoma County residents are being asked to dump the habit of pouring unused medications down the drain. Whether it is prescription or non-prescription medications, it is not recommended that you flush them down the toilet or pour them down the drain.

The City of Santa Rosa wants to reduce the amount of pharmaceuti-cals in the wastewater that is pro-cessed through the treatment plant, and therefore offers 13 locations in Santa Rosa where residents can

take back their unwanted medica-tions FREE of charge. By doing this, residents reduce the risks of accidental poisoning, the inten-tional abuse of medications, and the amount of medicine disposed of in landfills and the water supply. To date, the Safe Medicine Disposal Program has collected more than 36,000 pounds of unwanted medi-cations.

For a list of participating take- back locations, please visit www.safemedicinedisposal.org or call the Environmental Compliance Section at (707) 543-3369.

There are many joys associated with retirement, including long restful days sitting in your favor-ite chair. But, before you sit, you should know, the latest research shows a link between too much sitting and chronic disease. But, how much sitting is too much? The result may surprise you; just four hours a day. Research conducted by Richard Rosenkranz, from Kan-sas State University, of more than 63,000 men found that individuals sitting for more than four hours per day were significantly more likely

to report having a chronic disease such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. It appears this correlation is indepen-dent of other poor health choices. More research is yet to come, but the study is convincing.

So, get on your feet and join us for an exercise class. We have a wide variety of classes for people of all fitness levels and abilities. Our instructors are skilled at helping stu-dents modify movements to accom-modate any physical limitations.

Donna Burch is a well-known face around the Finley Swim Center with more than 18 years instructing water fitness. In fact, Donna was instrumental in the proliferation of water fitness and therapeutic water exercise at aquatic centers throughout So-noma County. However, what you may not know is her passion for wellness extends beyond the swimming pool. Donna is also a skilled yoga instructor. Her relationship with yoga began in the early eighties when she began teaching fitness classes and incor-porated yoga for stretching and relaxation. She began practicing yoga regularly in 1998. Donna

is trained in the Vinyasa Flow style and enjoys infusing ideas from a variety of workshops and instructors into her classes. With a Master’s Degree in Kinesiol-ogy, Donna brings a professional awareness of body mechanics to her classes.

The Easy Flow Vinyasa yoga Donna teaches is great for begin-ners, and can be modified to Chair Yoga for those folks who have difficulty getting up and down from the floor. “There are many benefits to participation” says Donna, “yoga improves flexibil-ity, may decrease pain, improves sleep, increases strength, im-

proves balance, reduces stress, and lead to a sense of inner calm, and there are many others!”

Join Donna at Yoga with Donna M-TH 11:30am-12:30pm for a $7 drop-in class at the Person Senior Wing or find her at the pool teaching water fitness.
