library for the synth enthusiast on a

budget. Nostalgia gives musicians,

sound designers and producers

access to a wealth of instruments,

many of which haven't yet beenemulated effectively as virtual

instruments... All of the synth

sounds breathe character and it

truly is a delight to play each of the

classic synths, many of which you

will recognise only by sound and

not necessarily by name...

Kompakt provides a simple yet

powerful sampling engine that is

perfect for use with these synth

patches. The built-in effects and

modulation parameters provide the

user with the right balance of features and ease of use...

Scrolling through the patch list

gives an idea of the depth that

Nostalgia provides: there are

sounds for nearly every commonly

used synth, as well as a number of

classic synthesizer museum guide,

but also offers a wealth of sounds

from practically every chintzy

sound source you could possibly

imagine... There’s a phenomenal

amount of obscure drum hits

slotted in amongst the usual

808/909 business, which are boundto bring back a few memories to

the majority of you – we swear 

we’ve heard them in many a pop

classic over the years. The pads

are of an exceptional quality as

well, especially the glassy, organic

collection of FM soundscapes – the

likes of which make Eno proud...

This is a truly wide-ranging

collection for ‘through the ages’

Nostalgia is excellent. Zero G and

Steve Howell should be

congratulated for putting together 

such a large number of 'classic'

sounds in a single, very affordable

library. I had no problems creatingcomplete instrumental pieces using

 just the sounds within Nostalgia.

What's more, unlike some

Kompakt-based libraries, this one

does make very good use of 

Kompakt's own processing options

to add further colour and movement

to many of the sounds... What is

here sounds consistently good, the

samples are well programmed... If 

you like the sounds of classic

synths and drum machines, but

could never afford to buy even a

modest selection of the electronic

instruments represented here, this

library is an excellent way to get a

flavour of the sounds without

breaking the bank. For sheer fun

and 'bang for buck', Nostalgia is

certainly worth FIVE STARS, and

I'd probably give it more if I could!

Memory SizeAll programm ing has been carriedout to minimise the size of thepatches thus reducing CPU andMemory Usage.

Modulation Wheel AssignmentsEvery single instrument has theModulation Wheel assigned to afunction. This gives a lot o f dynamiccontrol over the character of thesound. P lease try out the

modulation wheel when playing eachpatch. The Mod Wheel may beassigned to o ne of se veral differentcontrollers including Tune LFO, FilterCutoff, Pan and Volume de pendingon the pa tch in question.

PolyphonyAll instruments a re programm ed atthe default polyphony of 32 notesexcept for a se lection of patchesfrom synths that were originallymonophonic and some bass soundswhich have thus b een programm edas m onopho nic. If you wish toincrease the po lyphony please doso .

MultisInstruments can be combined in aMulti giving a vast array of possiblecombinations of the supplied singleinstruments. For ex ample trycombining a couple of bassinstruments fo r some really fat andthunderous sounds. O r how aboutcombining a Sawtooth and Squarewave pad and then using themodwheel to crossfade betweenthem. This latter effect is easy toset up by over-riding the pre-programmed Mod Whee lassignme nts. Simply set the ModWheel to control one instrument withpositive volume control and theother with negative volume control.

CPU LoadThe exact CPU load of any giveninstrument depends on a myriad of factors - the power of yourcomputer, notes played, complex ityof the instrument etc. However if youfind the CPU load is too high for anyparticular instrument the quickestway of reducing this is to see if theinstrument use s any o f Kontakt'sown built in FX. If so these can beturned off to maximise CPUefficiency.
